| |  | Eurobasket was able to talk to Eban Hyams (193-G-81, college: Georgia Perimeter), who played professionally in Israel the past season.
Read here what he got to tell about his experience:
Eurobasket: Eban, you played only in a few games last year in Israel, what was the
reason?
Eban Hyams: Well, I took my break to go home, as the league had giving teams ten days
off in January 2008. Since I had some personal things to solve back home,
the coach and management gave me the ten days for a trip to Australia. I
stayed for days longer than previously expected and missed one game and was
cut from the team.
Eurobasket: So what happened next? Did you return to Israel?
Hyams: Yes, I went back to apologize for what happened, but it was
apparently not good enough for them.
The team did not pay the last wages, but eventually paid me some of it
later if I would sign the clearance form. I did so in the end just to go in
peace.
Eurobasket: What are your plans for the upcoming season?
Hyams: Im here in Sydney and finished playing in the off-season and I am
trying to get back to Israel again to play another season there.
Whats pretty confusing to me: There is a rumor in Israel that I went to
jail either there or here in Australia. I never have been to jail, so its
very annoying to hear these charges against me and its really affecting my
chances of signing with a team.
I'm really sad that people would come to this level when all I did was
leaving in peace and in all honesty.
All I did was miss one game and I was willing to pay a fine or do whatever
it took to make up for it.
Eurobasket: So what is your message to the teams out there?
Hyams: All I want is for my name to be cleared, so I can go back and play in
Israel.
I love the country and the people there and its my second home!
All my family in Israel is very supportive of me and they want to me there
as well and I hope that the teams wont believe such lies that are
spread just to destroy my name and career!

| | | Eurobasket was able to talk to Armenian guard Rouben Vesmadian (191-G-83, college: Fresno St.) about his recent experience in Egypt.
Eurobasket: Ruben, the last time we spoke, you left to Egypt to play for Eastern Company. What has happened there to you?
Rouben Vesmadian: I was signed to play for Eastern Company, the national tobacco company co-incidentally founded in the 1950's by an Armenian.
They only paid me some hand-money in the beginning and stopped paying me since then, so I went on a strike and intended not to play until they pay me my monthly wage. It never happened so I left the team after three months without any payment.
EB: What could have been the reason for not paying you?
RV: It took me a while to find out the real reason for not being paid.
One time, Coach Sarwat told one of his players, that if he was going to play for a coach of another team, that he won't be paid as the other coach was Christian and therefore 'dirty'. Being only one of two Christian players in the league, it made me think.
I found out, that the other Christian player is having a hard time on his team and the league as well. Sarwat was quoted saying, that 'he wants no Christians on his team' and players told me, that the reason for my problems were because of my religious belief, as the coach is known for his extremist Muslim thoughts.
Also, a player in Egypt is still expected to comply with the contract or the job even though the payment is late or never arrives, so what I did was highly unusual there when I went on a strike, and they claimed I was acting out of line, and took the whole Christian thing to another level.
EB: Do you regret signing with Eastern Company and what are your plans for the near future?
RV: I try to use all my experiences as events that I can learn from... but I struggle to find any sense in this whole situation.
How can even the most extremist and hateful person behave in such a way, particularly, a married man with children?
It makes me sick, that I played for such a coach. I wish coaches have no bearing on financial matters and that it could be taken up with the manager or president of a team, but this is unfortunately not the case in Egypt.
I am a player that leaves everything out on the court for my team and my coach, but this situation has hurt me so much, that I wish, I had not played this season and had gotten my surgery done.
I would have saved a lot of time.
I am having a groin reconstruction surgery done by a specialist in Sydney on the 6th of June and will be commencing rehab for six weeks before signing with a new team for the following season.
Playing basketball overseas is such a great thing which comes with a lot of ups and downs that you cherish and learn from.
This was not the case in Egypt; it just didn't make any sense.

Vesmadian is not going to count as an import due to his egyptian citizenship and hopes to contribute significantly to the teams' success. |

| Zargaryan - a star in the making ? | |

| | | Zareh Zargaryan could be another big time player from Armenia.The young forward is currently averaging 11.4 points per game in his first year at the Glendale Community College in California and should be getting looks from D1 schools already.The team's third leading scorer is also a great passer with 4.8 assists per game which are team's best.
His needs to work on his shooting as his 39% aren't great but with another year time to polish his game , the future looks definitely bright for the Glendale-native. |

| Keucheyan moves to Stuttgart | |

| | | Swiss-Armenian guard Sevag Keucheyan (178-G-78, agency: HM Sports Agency) stays in the Stuttgart-area in Germany after signing with MTV Stuttgart in the Regionalliga South-West.
He averaged 13.9 ppg for TS Goeppingen in the same league but was released earlier this month and will be suiting up for rivals Stuttgart who lost a player due to an injury recently. Sevag is going to be a free-agent in January , so we will be keeping you updated on his career. |

| Sweden U18 reaches 3-0, while Armenia is vice versa | |

Sweden U18 destroyed Armenia in Day 4 of U18 European Championship. A 90:32 win was a great step to the first place in the group. Andreas Karlsson (194-F-89) and Bengt Pettersson (-89) led the winners with 13 points each. John Gaddefors (-89) supported them with 11. Aghajanyan Andranik Novents (-89) was the only one to reach the double digits nailing 13 points.
Sweden dominated in every quarter and there was no time when you could think of another team. Armenia lost only 8-18 in the last that was applaud by the specators.

| Holland U18 gets an easy first win | |

Netherlands U18 did not have many troubles in the first game of the U18 European Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. The team that appeared in the court aganst them was Armenia. The latter did their best but were smashed 103:40. Joshua Kramer (192-F-90) led the way with 21 points. Bob van den Enden (-89) ended up with 19, as Kherrazi scored 18 points and made 14 rebounds. Gevorg Mayilyan (-90) posted 12 in the losing effort.
Netherlands took a lead from the first minuutes of the game. Armenia saw only one time a tie when Andranik Novents (-89) tied at 2-2. It took Armenia more than 5 minutes to score another 2 points. The first quarter was ended as the teams had 32:15 for the favorites.
Kherrazi increased the lead to 20 points after he made a jump-shot. It was him again who made the difference 30 points in the end of the half.
In the second half instead of opened game Netherlands paid too much attention in defense. As a result the team left Armenia in 8 in the third and 6 in the last. Netherlands overwhelmed Armenia 103:40 to take the first spot in the group.
