Round 17: Partizan is upset by HKK Siroki WWin - Jan 14, 2013

The game between third ranked Serbian Partizan (11-6) and thirteenth ranked Bosnian HKK Siroki WWin (6-11) was the most important one in the last round on Saturday night. Partizan was defeated by HKK Siroki WWin in a tough game in Siroki Brijeg 80-87. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Partizan. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. HKK Siroki WWin made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. 25 personal fouls committed by Partizan helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was Serbian guard Marko Sutalo (193-83, agency: BeoExcell) who scored 21 points. American point guard Johnathon Jones (183-88, college: Oakland, agency: TSS Management) chipped in 12 points and 7 assists. Guard Dragan Milosavljevic (198-89) produced 10 points and 6 assists for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Defending Bosnian champion moved-up to eleventh place, which they share with Cibona and Zadar. Defending Serbian champion Partizan keeps the third position with six games lost. HKK Siroki WWin is looking forward to face higher ranked Krka (#9) in Novo Mesto in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Partizan will play at home against Buducnost (#4) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
Bosnian leader Igokea delivered the fourteenth victory. This time they beat 9th ranked Croatian KK Split (7-10) 68-60. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of KK Split. Serbian forward Branko Jorovic (204-81, agency: Beo Basket) orchestrated the victory by scoring 24 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Corsley Edwards contributed with 14 points for the winners. Filip Kruslin (198-89, agency: Beo Basket) answered with 14 points for KK Split. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Igokea maintains first place with 14-3 record. KK Split at the other side keeps the ninth position with ten games lost. They share it with Krka. Igokea will play against league's second-placed Zvezda in Beograd in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. KK Split will play on the road against MZT Skopje (#6) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Cedevita will play at home against Un.Olimpija (#5) in Ljubljana and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Other games of round 17 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Zadar was defeated by Un.Olimpija in Ljubljana 88-81. Buducnost smashed Szolnok at home 88-63. Krka won against Cibona on the opponent's court 86-78.
The best stats of 17th round was 26 points and 10 rebounds by Romeo Travis of Zadar.



Radnicki KG - MZT Skopje 89-83

The game in Kragujevac was also quite interesting. 5th ranked FYR Macedonian MZT Skopje (9-8) played at the court of eighth ranked Serbian Radnicki KG (9-8). Radnicki KG managed to secure a 6-point victory 89-83 on Monday. MZT Skopje was trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 5-point lead after three quarters before a 28-17 charge of Radnicki KG, which allowed them to win the game. They made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. Slovenian-Serbian point guard Aleksandar Capin (186-82, agency: Beo Basket) stepped up and scored 26 points and 9 assists for the winners and power forward Stefan Bircevic (210-89) chipped in 17 points and 11 rebounds. Radnicki KG's coach Miroslav Nikolic used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. Damjan Stojanovski (197-87) responded with 21 points and 7 rebounds and Serbian power forward Uros Nikolic (207-87) scored 12 points and 8 rebounds. Un.Olimpija - Zadar 88-81

There was no surprise in Ljubljana where 11th ranked Croatian KK Zadar (6-11) was defeated by seventh ranked Slovenian Un.Olimpija (9-8) 88-81. It looked good early as KK Zadar took an 2-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Un.Olimpija had a 27-17 second period charge getting the lead and KK Zadar was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 81-88. Guard Jaka Blazic (196-90) nailed 26 points for the winning side and Finnish point guard Teemu Rannikko (189-80) accounted for 17 points and 4 assists. American Romeo Travis (201-84, college: Akron) came up with a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds and swingman Ante Delas (200-88) added 11 points respectively for KK Zadar in the defeat. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Un.Olimpija moved-up to fifth place, which they share with 3 other teams. KK Zadar lost third consecutive game. KK Zadar at the other side keeps the eleventh position with 11 games lost. Un.Olimpija's next round opponent will be Cedevita (#7) in Zagreb. Crvena Zvezda - Cedevita 90-65

The game with biggest result difference took place in Beograd. Local Zvezda (12-5) outscored 6th ranked Croatian Cedevita (9-8) 90-65. The game was mostly controlled by Zvezda. Cedevita was better in third quarter 19-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Zvezda had a 34-23 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three nailing 12 long-distance shots on high 63.2 percentage. Zvezda players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. Guard Vuk Radivojevic (196-83) nailed 9 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the winning side and forward Boris Savovic (210-87, agency: Beo Basket) accounted for 14 points and 6 rebounds. Four Zvezda players scored in double figures. American guard Bracey Wright (191-84, college: Indiana, agency: Priority Sports) came up with 22 points and 6 assists and Bosnian-Croatian center Goran Suton (208-85, college: Michigan St.) added 13 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Cedevita in the defeat. Buducnost - Szolnok 88-63

No shocking result in a game in Podgorica where fourth ranked Montenegrin Buducnost (10-7) smashed bottom-ranked Hungarian Szolnok (4-13) 88-63. The game without a history. Buducnost led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Guard Vladimir Mihailovic (193-90) nailed 15 points for the winning side and Serbian forward Strahinja Milosevic (203-85) accounted for 15 points and 5 rebounds. Bosnian-Montenegrin swingman Sead Sehovic (196-89) came up with 19 points and Latvian forward Ernests Kalve (200-87) added 14 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Szolnok in the defeat. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Buducnost. Defending Montenegrin champion maintains fourth place with 10-7 record. Szolnok lost their third game in a row. Defending Hungarian champion stay at the bottom position with 13 games lost. Buducnost's next round opponent will be higher ranked Partizan (#3) in Beograd and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Szolnok will play at home against Radnicki KG (#8) in Kragujevac.

Everything could happen in Zagreb at the game between two tied teams. Both tenth ranked Slovenian Krka and 11th ranked Croatian Cibona had identical 6-10 record. But Cibona was not able to use a home court advantage and was defeated by the opponent from Novo Mesto 86-78. Cibona was ahead by 4 points at the halftime before a 45-33 second half run of Krka. They made 19-of-25 charity shots (76.0 percent) during the game. Swingman Domen Lorbek (198-85) nailed 22 points for the winning side and power forward Smiljan Pavic (210-80) accounted for 15 points and 11 rebounds (perfect from the field making all six shots). Four Krka players scored in double figures. Power forward Dario Saric (208-94) came up with 10 points and 6 rebounds and American guard D.J. Strawberry (196-85, college: Maryland) added 8 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Cibona in the defeat.
