A Bundesliga Round 18: Gmunden Swans beat Arkadia Lions by three after a very close game - Jan 9, 2017

A Bundesliga is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 18 rounds left.

Sixth-ranked Arkadia Lions (6-10) were very close to win a game against second ranked Gmunden Swans (12-4) on Sunday. Gmunden Swans managed to secure only three-point victory 81-78. However their fans expected much easier game. Arkadia Lions trailed by 11 points after 3 quarters before a 22-14 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 78-81 at the end of the game. Gmunden Swans looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. It was a good game for international forward Enis Murati (194-88, agency: Octagon Europe) who led his team to a victory with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Naturalized German power forward Tilo Klette (206-77) contributed with 24 points and 4 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) for the winners. Argentinian-Italian forward Fabricio Vay (207-86, agency: Interperformances) replied with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for Arkadia Lions. Gmunden Swans have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 12-4 record behind leader Oberwart. Arkadia Lions lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the seventh place with ten games lost. Gmunden Swans are again looking forward to face Arkadia Lions (#7) in Traiskirchen in the next round where they are favorite. Arkadia Lions will have a break next round.
An interesting game for Redwell Gunners Oberwart (13-2) which played road game in Wien against 4th ranked Vienna (7-9). First ranked Redwell Gunners Oberwart managed to get a 14-point victory 76-62. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Vienna. American point guard Derek Jackson (185-91, college: Kent St., agency: Mansfield and Associates) scored 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals to lead the charge for the winners and Chris McNealy chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. Redwell Gunners Oberwart's coach Chris Chougaz allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was Serbian Predrag Miletic (193-84) with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Redwell Gunners Oberwart have an impressive nine-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 13-2 record. Vienna at the other side dropped to the fifth place with nine games lost. Redwell Gunners Oberwart will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Vienna will play again on the road against the league's leader Redwell Gunners Oberwart (#1) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

In the last two games of round 18 UBSC Graz were beaten by Kapfenberg on the road 73-62. Furstenfeld won against Klosterneuburg on its own court 80-71.
The most impressive performance of 18th round was 12 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists by Anton Maresch of UBSC Graz.

Vienna - Oberwart 62-76

No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked Kapfenberg Bulls (8-8) beat at home 8th ranked UBSC Graz (5-11) 73-62. The game was mostly controlled by Kapfenberg Bulls. UBSC Graz was better in fourth quarter 18-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Naturalized Croatian power forward Milan Stegnjaic (204-81) scored 19 points and 6 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and American guard Kareem Jamar (194-92, college: Montana) chipped in 16 points and 4 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was American forward Cameron Naylor (201-94, college: Texas St.) with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds and international Anton Maresch (191-91) scored 12 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists.
