Azerbaijan surprise Bulgaria in Baku in Day 2 of the EuroBasket qualifying campaign. With only 6 participating players the hosts side celebrated a 88:71 victory.
The hosts raced into an early 18-6 lead on two free throws from Davis, and led 26-14 at the end of the first quarter after Rasim Bashak nailed a late three-pointer. Moreover they won the second frame 27-17 and enjoyed 53:31 at the halftime. Azerbaijan also won the third period 23-21 and did not mind slowing down in the rest of the game. Bulgaria managed to win the last stanza 19-12 but could not come closer to the opponent.
Charles Davis (205-C-84, college: Alabama) stepped up with 30 points for the winners, while Orhan Haciyeva (200-PF-89) collected 16 points and 15 rebounds. Fuad Niftaliyev (185-PG-80) notched 15 and Rasim Bashak (200-F-80, agency: Court Side) added 13. Aleksandar Georgiev (203-F-90, agency: Interperformances) and Bozhidar Avramov (196-PG-90, agency: Interperformances) posted 14 points each in the losing effort as Bulgaria is with 1-1 record. Nikolay Varbanov (210-C-85, agency: Interperformances) followed them with 10 points in a loss.

This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of bottom-ranked Araz (0-6) to sixth ranked NTD U16 (1-3) 48-45 in the game for the sixth place.
