Azerbaijan loses European championship in Division C opener - Jul 7, 2008

Azerbaijan - Andorra 35:67

Azerbaijan and Andorra opened the European championship in Division C held in Luxembourg today. The teams got into preliminary Group A together with Luxembourg and Gibraltar. Andorra marked their dominance early on. They began the game with a 7:0 run. Azerbaijan posted their first points with almost three minutes gone in the quarter. Meira and Mun combined for the first 15 points from Andorra as they grabbed a 15:6 advantage midway through the first period. Zycova and Iskakova dropped 4 points for Azerbaijan early in the second period to cut the deficit. However Mun and Meira soon made it a 20-point advantage for Andorra. Iskakova capped the first half with a jumper and Azerbaijan trailed 19:38 at halftime. The teams scored just 16 points in the third stanza and Andorra enjoyed a 21-point buffer before the final stanza. Andorra easily kept their opponents at bay throughout the fourth frame and celebrated an impressive victory at the end. Mun and Meira led all scorers with 18 points apiece for Andorra. Pla and Hernandez had 11 points each in a win. Iskakova answered with 8 points and 5 steals for Azerbaijan. Zycova had 7 points and 9 boards in defeat. Andorra will next take on Luxembourg, while Azerbaijan will try to bounce back against Gibraltar.

Azerbaijan won gold at the 3x3 event of the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in both men and women in Baku, Azerbaijan on May 18-21. In the women's category, Azerbaijan avenged a pool loss and defeated Mali 13-7 in the final, with tournament top scorer Marcedes Marie Walker(191-C-86, college: Pittsburgh) owning the paint with 9 points and 12 rebounds in the game. Azerbaijan clinch second place in 3x3 tourney - 11 months ago
Azerbaijan clinched the second place in 3x3 international tournament with 6 participating countries. In the Semifinal Azerbaijan beat Uzbekistan 10-8. Turkmenistan wins 3x3 International tournament beating Azerbaijan in the Final 21-19. In a back-to-back game, the home side grabbed the latest lead and sealed the victory. Cankaya Universitesi Ankara (TKBL) confirmed in their roster 30-year old American (has also Azerbaijani passport) center Marcedes Marie Walker (191-86, college: Pittsburgh). She was a team leader there last season. In 14 TKBL games she recorded very impressive stats: 16.3ppg, 11.4rpg and 2.6apg.
