Round 5: Levski Sofia defeats Feni Indistrija in the closest game of the week - Dec 22, 2011

Balkan League is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 5 rounds left.

The most exciting game of round 5 in the Balkan League took place in Sofia. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 3rd placed FYR Macedonian Feni Indistrija (3-2) to leader Bulgarian Levski Sofia (5-0) 67-66 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Feni Indistrija. The hosts trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 20-17 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. They outrebounded Feni Indistrija 42-30 including 30 on the defensive glass. French-Bulgarian power forward Vasil Evtimov (207-77, college: N.Carolina, agency: Interperformances) stepped up and scored 9 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and American guard Marcus Hall (185-85, college: Colorado) chipped in 20 points. Bulgarian swingman Ivan Lilov (196-88) responded with 21 points. Feni Indistrija's coach Emil Rajkovic tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Undefeated Levski Sofia have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place in Group B with 5-0 record. Defending FYR Macedonian champion Feni Indistrija keeps the third position with two games lost. Levski Sofia are looking forward to face bottom-ranked Zrinjski HT (#6) in Mostar in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Feni Indistrija will play at home against Ulcinj in Ulcijn and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Important game to mention about took place in Krusevac. Fourth ranked Serbian Napredak Rubin (2-3) saved a 1-point victory at home edging 5th ranked Montenegrin Ulcinj (1-4) 73-72 in the fight for the fourth place. Slaven Cupkovic (205-88) nailed 13 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side and Slobodan Pejovic accounted for 12 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Milos Djurisic (194-88) came up with 21 points and 8 rebounds for Ulcinj in the defeat. Napredak Rubin maintains fourth place in Group B with 2-3 record. Ulcinj lost their third game in a row. They keep the fifth position with four games lost. Napredak Rubin will play against league's second-placed Hapoel Tel-Aviv at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ulcinj will play against Feni Indistrija in Kavadarci and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Bar between Montenegrin Mornar Bar and Romanian Timisoara. Third ranked Mornar Bar (3-2) got a very close home victory over 5th ranked Timisoara (1-4). Mornar Bar managed to escape with a 2-point win 79-77 on Tuesday evening. The best player for the winners was Akeem Scott who scored 19 points and 4 assists. Dominique Archie produced 14 points and 7 rebounds for the guests. Mornar Bar moved-up to second place in Group A, which they share with Rilski Sportist. Timisoara at the other side dropped to the bottom position with four games lost. Mornar Bar will meet at home Torus Skopje (#5) in the next round. Timisoara will play against OKK Beograd and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Rilski Sportist will play against the league's leader Galil Gilboa (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Galil Gilboa will face league's second-placed Rilski Sportist in Samokov in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Torus Skopje will play on the road against Mornar Bar and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In Group B Hapoel T-A won against Zrinjski HT on the opponent's court 85-67.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 26 points by Almir Hasandic of Zrinjski HT.


Group A
Galil Gilboa - Torus Skopje 85-62

Very significant was Israeli Galil Gilboa's (#1, 5-0) victory against 4th placed FYR Macedonian Torus Skopje (1-3) 85-62. The game was mostly controlled by Galil Gilboa. Torus Skopje was better in third quarter 24-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Torus Skopje to just 6 points in second quarter. Galil Gilboa shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 57.1 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Guard Dagan Yavzuri (193-85) stepped up and scored 17 points, 5 assists and 4 steals for the winners and American Courtney Fells (198-86, college: N.Carolina St., agency: Strategic Sports) chipped in 17 points. Five Galil Gilboa players scored in double figures. American power forward Justin Reynolds (204-88, college: Texas A&M-CC) responded with 13 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import guard Jeremiah Boswell (194-82) scored 17 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Very important is a road loss of second ranked Bulgarian Rilski Sportist (3-2) against sixth ranked Serbian OKK Beograd (1-3) on Wednesday night. A very close game took place in Bar between Montenegrin Mornar Bar and Romanian Timisoara. Third ranked Mornar Bar (3-2) got a very close home victory over 5th ranked Timisoara (1-4). Mornar Bar managed to escape with a 2-point win 79-77 on Tuesday evening. Timisoara was tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. The best player for the winners was Jamaican-American point guard Akeem Scott (186-83, college: High Point, agency: Interperformances) who scored 19 points and 4 assists. Serbian Ivan Jelenic (190-85, agency: BeoExcell) chipped in 15 points and 5 rebounds. Scott is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American forward Dominique Archie (200-87, college: S.Carolina) produced 14 points and 7 rebounds and Bosnian point guard Zlatko Jovanovic (181-84, agency: Beo Basket) added 10 points and 9 assists respectively for the guests. Four Timisoara players scored in double figures. Mornar Bar moved-up to second place in Group A, which they share with Rilski Sportist. Important game to mention about took place in Krusevac. Fourth ranked Serbian Napredak Rubin (2-3) saved a 1-point victory at home edging 5th ranked Montenegrin Ulcinj (1-4) 73-72 in the fight for the fourth place. Ulcinj was tied at the half but could not keep up in last two quarters eventually losing the game. Napredak Rubin made 16-of-20 charity shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Napredak Rubin outrebounded Ulcinj 41-30 including 27 on the defensive glass. Slaven Cupkovic (205-88) nailed 13 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side and Montenegrin point guard Slobodan Pejovic (192-86) accounted for 12 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Milos Djurisic (194-88) came up with 21 points and 8 rebounds and forward Boban Medenica (204-87, agency: Beo Basket) added 16 points and 7 rebounds respectively for Ulcinj in the defeat. Very expected game in Mostar where bottom-ranked Bosnian Zrinjski HT (0-5) was defeated by second ranked Israeli Hapoel Tel-Aviv (4-1) 85-67 on Tuesday. The game was mostly controlled by Hapoel Tel-Aviv. Zrinjski HT was better in second period 21-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Hapoel Tel-Aviv dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Zrinjski HT's 36. American point guard Demontez Stitt (186-89, college: Clemson) stepped up and scored 15 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals for the winners and his fellow American import Curtis Kelly (205-88, college: Kansas St.) chipped in 18 points and 6 rebounds. Almir Hasandic (190-90) responded with 26 points (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) and American forward Marcel Jones (203-85, college: Oregon St., agency: David Lee services) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 16 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Hapoel Tel-Aviv maintains second place in Group B with 4-1 record behind leader Galil Gilboa. Zrinjski HT lost their fifth game in a row. They still closes the standings with five games lost. Hapoel Tel-Aviv will face Napredak Rubin (#4) in Krusevac in the next round. Zrinjski HT will play at home against the league's leader Levski Sofia and hopes to get finally their first victory.
