Round 5: Levski Sofia is defeated by Kumanovo 2009 - Nov 14, 2012

Balkan League is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 5 rounds left.

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Bulgarian Levski Sofia (2-1) on the court of third ranked FYR Macedonian Kumanovo 2009 on Wednesday night. Visitors were defeated by Kumanovo 2009 87-80. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Levski Sofia. It was a key game for the second position in Group A. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 29-19 charge, which allowed them to win the game. 28 personal fouls committed by Levski Sofia helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Swingman Ivica Dimcevski (194-89, agency: Interperformances) stepped up and scored 29 points and 7 rebounds for the winners and Serbian center Uros Lukovic (212-89) chipped in 16 points and 13 rebounds. Power forward Stefan Georgiev (206-78) responded with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Levski Sofia's coach Konstantin Papazov rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Kumanovo 2009 (3-1) moved-up to second place in Group A. Levski Sofia at the other side dropped to the third position with one game lost. Kumanovo 2009 is looking forward to face bottom-ranked Mornar Bar (#5) on the road in the next round. Levski Sofia will play against Djuro Djakovic in Slavonski Brod and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very significant was Israeli Galil Gilboa's (#1, 4-0) victory against 4th placed Croatian Djuro Djakovic (1-4) 101-69. American guard Jamar Smith (191-87, college: S.Indiana, agency: KMG Sports Management) nailed 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winning side and Yaniv Green accounted for 14 points and 8 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Galil Gilboa's coach Lior Lubin felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Power forward Marino Sarlija (207-89) came up with 8 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for Djuro Djakovic in the defeat. Galil Gilboa have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place in Group A with 4-0 record. Djuro Djakovic at the other side keeps the fourth position with four games lost. Galil Gilboa will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Djuro Djakovic will play on the road against Mornar Bar (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 5
In Group B Kozuv was destroyed by Rilski Sportist on the opponent's court 75-56. Teodo Tivat outscored Kavala in a home game 98-71.

Group A
Kumanovo - Levski Sofia 87-80

Djuro Djakovic - Galil Gilboa 69-101

Very significant was Israeli Galil Gilboa's (#1, 4-0) victory against 4th placed Croatian Djuro Djakovic (1-4) 101-69. The game without a history. Galil Gilboa led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Djuro Djakovic's 30. Galil Gilboa had a 23-11 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three nailing 12 long-distance shots on high 60.0 percentage. Galil Gilboa players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Djuro Djakovic's players. American guard Jamar Smith (191-87, college: S.Indiana, agency: KMG Sports Management) nailed 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winning side and center Yaniv Green (206-80, agency: Z.A.G. - Law Offices) accounted for 14 points and 8 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Rilski Sportist - Kozuv 75-56

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 9th ranked FYR Macedonian Kozuv's (2-3) road loss to eighth ranked Bulgarian Rilski Sportist (3-1) 56-75. The game was mostly controlled by Rilski Sportist. Kozuv was better in second period 19-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Kozuv to just 7 points in fourth quarter. Rilski Sportist made 17-of-19 charity shots (89.5 percent) during the game. They also forced 22 Kozuv turnovers. Serbian guard Branko Mirkovic (190-82, agency: Global Sports Plaza) nailed 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for the winning side and American point guard Terry Smith (185-86, college: Mercyhurst) accounted for 12 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Rilski Sportist's coach Rosen Barchovski allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Serbian power forward Slobodan Bozovic (207-79) came up with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and center Aleksandar Shterjov (208-86, agency: Global Sports Plaza) added 10 points and 6 rebounds respectively for Kozuv in the defeat. Rilski Sportist have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to seventh place in Group B. Kozuv at the other side keeps the ninth position with three games lost. Rilski Sportist will play against Kavala (#8) at home in the next round. Kozuv will play against OKK Beograd and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Teodo Tivat outrebounded Kavala 35-21 including a 26-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Teodo Tivat will play against Rilski Sportist (#7) in Samokov in the next round. Kavala will play on the road against Rilski Sportist in Samokov and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
