Baltic League round 3 best performance: Maris Gulbis - Oct 8, 2012

  follow us on Facebook Twitter

Portuguese forward Maris Gulbis (202-F-85, agency: Players Group) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for second-ranked Barons kvartals, receiving a Player of the Week award for round 3.
The 27-year old player was the main contributor (28 points, eight rebounds and two assists) to his team's victory, helping them to beat Sakalai (#3, 0-1), the league's bottom-ranked team in overtime 86-76. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Barons kvartals maintains the 2nd position in Baltic League . They maintain perfect record without any lost game in the league. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Barons kvartals won both games without losing any. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. Gulbis turned to be Barons kvartals' top player in his first season with the team. Maris Gulbis has solid league stats. He is in league's top in points (3rd best: 19.0ppg) and rebounds (7th best: 8.0rpg).

The second best player in last round's games was -year old Nigerian Ike Okoye (206-F) of Tln Kalev. Okoye had a very good evening with a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds. Bad luck as Tln Kalev lost that game 73-82 to Rudupis (3-0). The season is still at the very beginning and this lost game may not be such crucial, of course if they start win the games. Let's wait for the next round. Okoye is a newcomer at Tln Kalev, but is already one of team's top players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 20.0ppg (#2). He also registered 12.5 boards per game.

Third on the list of top players last round was Ukrainian center Vadim Matyukevych (208-C-80) of Barsy Atyrau (#6). Matyukevych scored 17 points and grabbed fifteen rebounds (!!!). Despite Matyukevych's great performance Barsy Atyrau lost 75-82 to Naglis Palangos (#4, 1-1). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. Barsy Atyrau can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have awful season losing so far all 2 games. Too bad for Matyukevych he does not play for a better team. But maybe if he did, his season stats would not be that high. Matyukevych has individually a great season in Baltic League. After only 2 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 15.5ppg (8th best) and rebounds with 13.0rpg (#1 in league).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Aivaras Kiausas (199-F-80) of Sakalai - 12 points and 11 rebounds
5. Siim-Sander Vene (203-SF-90) of Rudupis - 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists
6. Jekabs Rozitis (205-C-86) of Barons kvartals - 11 points and 10 rebounds
7. Zygimantas Janavicius (192-G-89) of Rudupis - 13 points
8. Parrish Brown (185-G-84) of Naglis Palangos - 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists
9. Arturas Milaknis (195-G-86) of Rudupis - 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists
10. Petras Balocka (205-C-86) of Sakalai - 17 points and 6 rebounds

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
