There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with derby games and games ending by tiny margin.

The most exciting game of round 9 in the Baltic League took place in Rakvere. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 5th ranked Latvian Barons kvartals (2-5) to second ranked Estonian BC Rakvere (4-3) 71-68 on Friday evening. The hosts trailed by 4 points after three quarters before their 22-15 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Barons kvartals outrebounded BC Rakvere 46-32 including 32 on the defensive glass. Point guard Reimo Tamm (185-84) stepped up and scored 20 points and 5 rebounds for the winners and Latvian swingman Juris Umbrasko (197-79) chipped in 14 points and 7 rebounds. The best for the losing side was forward Arturs Brunins (198-82) with 23 points and 6 rebounds. BC Rakvere have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain second place with 4-3 record having just three points less than leader Pieno Zvaigzdes. Barons kvartals lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with five games lost. They share it with Liepaja. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
Important game to mention about took place in Valga. Sixth ranked Estonian Valga (1-5) saved a 3-point victory at home edging 5th ranked Latvian Liepaja (2-5) 60-57 on Friday evening. Latvian center Raitis Grafs (208-81, college: Valparaiso) nailed 20 points and 5 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winning side and Veljo Vares accounted for 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Guard Artis Ate (191-89) came up with 8 points and 7 rebounds for Liepaja in the defeat. Liepaja's coach Guntis Endzels rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Valga maintains sixth place with 1-5 record. It was Liepaja's third loss in a row. They keep the fifth position with five games lost. They share it with Barons kvartals. Valga will play against league's second-placed Lietkabelis in Panevezys in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Liepaja will play at home against Jelgava and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Undefeated Rudupis (8-0) have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain first place with a perfect record of 8 victories in a row. Nevezis at the other side keep the fourth position with four games lost. Rudupis will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Nevezis will play against Sakalai (#3) in Vilnius and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

It was a good game for Mindaugas Kupsas who led his team to a victory with 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). The victory was the third consecutive win for Lietkabelis. They maintain second place with 5-1 record having just three points less than leader Pieno Zvaigzdes. Juventus at the other side keep the third position with three games lost. Lietkabelis' next round opponent will be Valga (#6) on the road. Juventus will play against Jelgava and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game between Top Four teams took place in Siauliai. Second-best Lithuanian host Siauliai (5-2) lost to leader Latvian Ventspils (7-0) 71-65. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Siauliai. Arturs Berzins stepped up with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for Ventspils. They maintain first place with 7-0 record. Loser Siauliai keeps the second position with two games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 9: Liepaja was destroyed by TU/Rock on the opponent's court 87-55. Valmiera outscored LSU-Baltai in a home game 83-56. Sakalai rolled over Tln Kalev on the road 78-55.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 14 points and 11 rebounds by Maris Ziedins of Valmiera.



TU/Rock - Liepaja 87-55

Very expected game in Tartu where 5th ranked Latvian Liepaja (2-5) was crushed by first ranked Estonian TU/Rock (6-1) 87-55 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 10-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 87-55. Russian center Ivan Nelyubov (207-88) stepped up and scored 13 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and guard Tanel Kurbas (197-88) chipped in 18 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Four TU/Rock players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American guard Greg Plater (185-89, college: Long Beach St.) with 11 points and 6 assists and center Toms Leiteris (213-90) scored 10 points and 5 rebounds. Liepaja's coach Guntis Endzels gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. TU/Rock maintains first place with 6-1 record. Liepaja lost their third game in a row. They keep the fifth position with five games lost. TU/Rock will face Valga (#6) at home in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Liepaja will play against Jelgava and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Nevezis - Rudupis 68-72

One of the most interesting games of round 9 was a derby match between two teams from Lithuania. The game took place in Kedainiai where leader Rudupis won against host Nevezis (3-4) 72-68. The guests trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 1-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 72-68. Strangely Nevezis outrebounded Rudupis 43-31 including a 34-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was swingman Gediminas Orelikas (200-90) who scored 20 points and 6 rebounds (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). The game between Top Four teams took place in Siauliai. Second-best Lithuanian host Siauliai (5-2) lost to leader Latvian Ventspils (7-0) 71-65. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Siauliai. The guests trailed by 14 points after first quarter, but they rallied back and won the game by 6 points. Ventspils made 19-of-24 free shots (79.2 percent) during the game. Ventspils outrebounded Siauliai 41-29 including 31 on the defensive glass. Valmiera - LSU-Baltai 83-56

Rather predictable result when third ranked Latvian Valmiera (3-3) smashed at home bottom-ranked Lithuanian LSU-Baltai (0-5) 83-56 on Friday. The game without a history. Valmiera led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to LSU-Baltai's 30. They outrebounded LSU-Baltai 42-28 including 21 on the offensive glass. Power forward Maris Ziedins (203-90) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winners and forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) chipped in 22 points and 5 rebounds. Four Valmiera players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was power forward Sarunas Beniusis (206-93) with 9 points and 6 rebounds and Zygimantas Skucas (200-92) scored 10 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Valmiera maintains third place with 3-3 record having five points less than leader Pieno Zvaigzdes, which they share with Sakalai and Juventus. LSU-Baltai lost their fifth game in a row. They still closes the standings with five games lost. Valmiera will face KK Parnu (#4) on the road in the next round. LSU-Baltai will play against the league's second-placed Kalev/Cramo in Tallinn and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Not a big story in a game in Tallinn where 6th ranked Estonian Tln Kalev (1-6) was rolled over by fourth ranked Lithuanian Sakalai (3-3) 78-55 on Friday. The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Jokubas Gintvainis (191-94) stepped up and scored 15 points and 4 assists for the winners and guard Paulius Dambrauskas (191-91) chipped in 12 points and 6 assists. Four Sakalai players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Nigerian-American forward Ike Okoye (206, college: Boise St.) with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and American-Italian guard Marc Campbell (180-86, college: N.Carolina) scored 7 points. Sakalai moved-up to third place, which they share with Valmiera and Juventus. Loser Tln Kalev keeps the sixth position with six games lost. One of the most interesting games of round 9 was a derby match between two teams from Lithuania. The game took place in Panevezys where second ranked Lietkabelis won against visiting Juventus (3-3) 74-67. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Juventus. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 23-18. But Juventus won second period 18-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Lietkabelis forced 19 Juventus turnovers. 25 personal fouls committed by Juventus helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for center Mindaugas Kupsas (215-91) who led his team to a victory with 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field).
