Zalgiris is the new champion of SEB BBL
In the unprecedented SEB
BBL final Zalgiris Kaunas led by
DeJuan Collins (188-G-76, college:
Tuskegee) has won the thriller against Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius 86:84
and took home the trophy for the first time since 2005.
The first quarter belonged to Zalgiris and especially to D.Collins who
single-handedly outscored the whole Lietuvos Rytas team. Zalgiris took a
double-digit lead from early on and contained it for the rest of this
period. D.Collins 17 points for Kaunas team, while the first quarter
ended 28:12 up by Zalgiris. Marko Popovic concluded it with a shot from
nearly half-court.
Second period brought even more physical game and better defense from
both squads. After more than 3 minutes of play M.Popovic made a
two-pointer to make it 34:22 lead for Zalgiris. The differential stayed
in double figures for most of the time, even if Lietuvos Rytas was able
to cut it to 9 and 8 for several times. At the half Zalgiris led 48:40.
After three minutes of play in the third quarter Chuck Eidson made dunk
after the steal and cut the deficit to 5 points. Just after that
Lietuvos Rytas had an opportunity to make it already 3-point game, but
Arturas Jomantas (202-G/F-85) stepped at the baseline and J.Maciulis
made the opponents pay by making a long-range shot. Zalgiris quickly
regained a double-digit lead. Less than 2 minutes to play in the third
quarter M.Brown made a long trey and the score became 62:51.
Matt Nielsen (208-F/C-78) had a similar answer and a quick steal
following a dunk by
Mindaugas Lukauskis (198-G-79) who made it a 6-point game 56:62.
After three quarters it was 67:59 up by Zalgiris.
M.Lukauskis continued his successful performance ad scored a shot behind
the arc just after a coupe of minutes being played in the final period.
After good execution on the defensive end Jared Jordan made another
three-pointer and the score became 65:69. Midway through this period
Jonas Maciulis (200-G/F-85, agency:
Interperformances) made a jumper off the glass and increased his
clubs lead to 9 points 78:69. More than 2 minutes left to play missed
the wild three-pointer and the score remained 73:78 up by Zalgiris.
M.Nielsen cut it to 3 (75:78) and after a lay-up by
Kenan Bajramovic (206-F-81, agency:
Beo Basket) it was just a 1-point game 77:78. K.Bajramovic made a
crucial three-pointer for Lietuvos Rytas that tied the game at 82:82 and
leaving only 10 seconds for Zalgiris.
Goran Jurak (203-F/C-77) was fouled and put at the free throw line.
The Slovenian soldier cold-bloodedly made both shots at the stripe
84:82.
Hollis Price (186-G-79, college:
Oklahoma) tied the game once again by making two free throws 84:84
and leaving 4 seconds at the clock. That appeared to be enough for
D.Collins who dribbled the ball through the whole court and made miracle
reverse lay-up and sealed the win for his team.
D.Collins was the true leader for Zalgiris scoring 29 points.

Murray St.) added 24 (4 ast.). Ch.Eidson (6 rebs., 4 ast.) and
K.Bajramovic (6 rebs.) scored 16 apiece for Lietuvos Rytas.

is the best in Challenge Cup !
Nevezis triumphs in
Challenge Cup 2007/08 season. In the Final game Lithuanian team overcame
Latvian VEF Riga 81:68. Two teams truthfully entered the game as both of
them finished the regular season with 15-5 record. After a semifinal
wins only one of them could celebrate in the battle and Nevezis took its
glory. A 22:19 in the opening quarter proved the ambitions of both
teams, but then Nevezis increased to 18:11 in the second to take 10
points advantage of the first half. VEF Riga bounced back with 20:17,
however that was all they could do. Lithuanian team ended up the last
period with another 6 points advantage and lifted the Cup in the air.
Benas Veikalas (193-G-83, college:
Metro St.) led the winners with 21 points.
Gintaras Leonavicius (194-G-83) produced 14, while
Zydrunas Stankus (197-G/F-78, college:
Campbell) added 13.
Maris Gulbis (203-F-85, agency:
Interperformances) top-scored for Latvian team with 19 points.
Panevezys grabs bronze of the Challenge Cup defeating Liepajas Lauvas
84:79. Panevezys started very offensively and produced 28:13 in the
opening quarter. Lithuanian team had 20 points at the half and held the
score for good even though Liepajas Lauvas looked better in the second
half.
Paulus Staskunas (200-F-74) and
Mindaugas Budzinauskas (198-G-73) led the winners with 21 points
each. Stasaitis and
Phillip Williams (206-F-84, agency:
Naiditch Entertainment, college:
Winthrop) followed them with 12 points apiece.
Mareks Jurevicus (198-F-85) top-scored for Latvian team with 22

Baltic League All-Star Game 2008
Foreign Stars-Baltic Stars 154:136
The Baltic League played their All Star Game last night. Aside from the
game the spectators could enjoy the Three-Point Shooting Contest and
Slam Dunk competition.
In the game between the Foreign Stars and Baltic Stars the foreigners
were stronger, winning by s score of 154:136. They took a control in the
beginning of the game and after
Dwayne Broyles (196-F/G-82) nailed another 3-pointer the score was
36:22. The Foreign Stars finished the first quarter leading 46:32.
The result of the quarter is usually the result of the half in the BBL
league, however both teams did not pay to much attention to defense and
allowed their opponents to make some more tricks on the court. The
halftime score reached 75:68 still with the players from abroad on top.
They spurted to another 120:99 after three quarters and finally won by a
score of 154:136 at the buzzer.
Vladimir Stimac (206-C-87) from Valmiera was named an MVP of the
game scoring 23 points and grabbing 8 boards.
Mateo Kedzo (207-F/C-84) from Kalev also finished the night with 23
points for Foreign Stars.
Dwayne Broyles from ASK Riga scored 20 and
Marko Popovic (185-G-82) from Zalgiris scored 15.
Sandis Valters (193-G/F-78) produced 22 points for the Baltic Stars,
while
Marijonas Petravicius (207-F/C-79) collected 20 points and 11
rebounds.
Ingus Bankevics (195-G/F-85) was the winner of the Three-Point
Shooting Contest. The player from Valmiera defeated Virginijus Sirvydis
17:14 in the decisive duel.
Bojan Pelkic (206-F-83) was a Slam Dunk Champion. He made 360
degrees turnaround dunk with one hand before jumping over Gailius for
his second dunk in Final. Pelkic finished of with a high-flying basket
that was rewarded with loud cheers from the Saku Arena crowd. Foreign Stars:
