Regular Season Round 1: Z*Kebs de Laval - Moncton M. 102-97

Date: October 29, 2011
The Moncton Miracles almost wrote a dramatic script in the National Basketball League of Canada's first-ever game. They staged a late rally and trailed by two points with 1:05 remaining, but lost 102-97 to the Quebec Kebs in an entertaining contest on Saturday in front of 650 fans at Université Laval in Quebec City. Moncton never held a lead and often trailed by double digits, but it kept battling back into the game. The Miracles trailed by 13 points with six minutes remaining and then went on a 14-3 run to cut their deficit to 97-95 with just over a minute showing on the clock to create a tension-packed finish. "One thing about our team is we're not going to quit and we showed that in this game," said Moncton head coach Norris Bell. "These guys have pride. If there's time on the clock, we always feel like we've got a chance to win. That's the attitude we're trying to build. "We had some positives in this game. We were aggressive and we out-rebounded them 62-43. That's a big positive. This is a process and we've got to continue to work and get better. It's like a puzzle and we've got to get the pieces together. We're trying to build on the positives and learn from the negatives." Moncton, which plays its first five games on the road, will return to action against the Oshawa Power on Thursday. The Miracles will face the Saint John Mill Rats in their home opener on Nov. 20 at the Moncton Coliseum. In the only other weekend game, Quebec improved to 2-0 with a 104-101 home-court victory over Oshawa yesterday. Moncton made just 31 of 81 attempts for a .383 field goal shooting percentage. Quebec hit 36 of 82 attempts for a .439 field goal shooting percentage. In terms of three-point shots, the Miracles were just 7-for-23 (.231) and the Kebs were 10-for-28 (.357). A major difference came on free throws where the Miralces struggled at 28-for-40 (.700) and the Kebs were 20-for-22 (.909). "We're a young team and we must mature in our decision making and there's areas we need to improve in terms of execution," said Bell. "It's hard to win when you have 23 turnovers like we had in this game. We need to manage the ball better. "We need to improve our field goal shooting. We missed some shots close to the basket. Our free throw shooting hurt us in this game. If we made half of the free throws that we missed, we would've won the game. That's an elementary thing. You've got to make free throws." Ralphy Holmes led Quebec with 21 points and he goes down as the first person to sink a basket in league history. The club's next biggest producers were Shaun Fountain and Jermaine Blackburn with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Jazzmar Ferguson, a point guard, was Moncton's top scorer with 22 points and he nailed four three-point shots. He may also some day be the answer to a trivia question.
