Regular Season Round 33: Z*Kebs de Laval - Halifax R. 75-127
Date: February 26, 2012
The Halifax Rainmen delivered a resounding message Sunday afternoon in Quebec City. The Rainmen dismantled the Quebec Kebs 127-75 in a record-setting effort that lifted them into a second-place tie with the Kebs and put them in the drivers seat to secure home-court advantage for the first round of the National Basketball League of Canada playoffs. Lawrence Wright (6'5'-F-84, college: Bradley) scored 22 points and the Rainmen obliterated the NBL mark for largest margin of victory to sweep a weekend series with Quebec in a preview of their best-of-three semifinal. The Rainmen nipped the Kebs 101-98 on Friday night at the Metro Centre. 'Our defence was just amazing today,' said Wright, who also snagged a game-high 10 boards. 'We frustrated them and I think this game is the best game defensive-wise weve had all year.' He wasnt exaggerating. Halifax set a franchise record for fewest points allowed in a game while holding the Kebs to 29 per cent shooting from the floor. The Rainmen also established a season best by limiting Quebec to 29 first-half points. The win snapped the Rainmens six-game road losing skid and left their fate completely in their own hands, since the Kebs (22-13) have only one game remaining, on Thursday in London against the league-leading Lightning. The Rainmen (21-12) are in Moncton tonight to play the Miracles, return home to entertain Moncton on Thursday night and travel to Saint John next Sunday to meet the fourth-place Mill Rats in the leagues regular-season finale. Since the Rainmen beat the Kebs 5-1 in their season series, they hold the tiebreaker should the two clubs finish with identical records. That means Halifax would clinch second place with one more win should Quebec lose in London, where the Kebs are 0-2 this season. If the Kebs beat the Lightning, Halifax would need to win at least two of its remaining three to secure second spot. 'Weve got some pretty tough games but were gonna come out and play as hard as we can and I think well be able to clinch that No. 2 spot,' Wright said. 'Home-court advantage is always important, especially in the playoffs, just having the crowd behind you and especially for us since the only team weve lost to at home is London.' Halifax is 15-2 at the Metro Centre and beat the Kebs in all three meetings there this season but is only 6-10 on the road. Quebec finishes 14-4 at home, is 8-9 on the road and beat the Rainmen just once in three tries in Quebec City. That lone victory, 103-80 on Feb. 3, represented Halifaxs worst loss of the year, giving the Rainmen plenty of motivation if they needed any Sunday afternoon. The two teams traded just a pair of baskets each in the first 3 minutes. But Wrights deuce to break the 4-4 draw got the visitors off and running. By the end of the quarter, theyd orchestrated a pair of 11-0 runs to open up a 35-13 lead, punctuated by Taliek Browns buzzer-beating runner from far beyond the arc. They bounded into the locker-room at halftime with a 63-29 advantage over the shell-shocked Kebs, whose top-rated defence entered the game yielding only 95.1 points per outing. Tyrone Levett (6'5'-F-80, college: Alabama St.) trey with 1:25 left in the third put Halifax in front 98-51 and Darnell Hugee sank a turnaround baseline jumper as the quarter ended to get the Rainmen to the century mark at 100-51. Levett finished with 18 points while Joey Haywood (6'1'-G-84) netted 15, Chris Hagan 14, Bryan McCullough 11 and Richard Anderson 10. Brown added nine points to go along with 10 of Halifaxs season-high 34 assists. Carl Krauser (6'1'-G-81, college: Pittsburgh) topped Quebec with 14. The 52-point win shattered the old mark for largest point spread set by London on Tuesday in a 119-84 thrashing of the Miracles. 'I think it always makes a statement when you beat a team by so much,' Wright said. 'Going into the playoffs were 5-1 (against Quebec) and mentally thats gonna hurt them, but for us were still gonna treat it like its our first game against them.'
