Regular Season Round 5: Balkan - Cluj Napoca 76-86

Rather expected game in Botevgrad where 4th placed Bulgarian Balkan (1-4) was defeated by second ranked Romanian Cluj Napoca (4-1) 86-76 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Cluj Napoca. Balkan was better in fourth quarter 25-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cluj Napoca dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Balkan's 36. They outrebounded Balkan 37-20 including a 27-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. Cluj Napoca looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was Croatian power forward Karlo Zganec (206-95) who scored 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. American point guard Kerron Johnson (183-90, college: Belmont) chipped in 13 points and 7 assists. Forward Aleks Simeonov (200-93) produced 13 points and Serbian point guard Marko Radonjic (190-93) added 13 points respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cluj Napoca keeps a position of Group G leader, which they share with Enisey. Balkan lost fourth consecutive game. Defending Bulgarian champion dropped to the third place with four games lost. Cluj Napoca will face league's leader Enisey in Krasnoyarsk in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Balkan will play at home against Sodertalje Kings and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
