The draw for the playoffs for the inaugural FIBA Basketball Champions League has been made, and has certainly thrown up some tantalising match-ups.

Of the twenty-four teams remaining in the competition out of the original forty, France's AS Monaco seem to be favourites most basketball betting sites, despite having to face the winners of the first playoff round game between Juventus and AEK Athens. Of that pairing, AEK Athens must be considered overwhelming favourites for that tie after finishing second in Group E as Juventus just scraped into the playoffs with an 8-6 record. An AEK win would set up a thrilling game with AS Monaco, with Monaco's Dee Bost (188-PG-89, college: Mississippi St., agency: BeoBasket) coming up against fellow American Michael Dixon.

Should Monaco slip up in their tie with either AEK or Juventus, then of the chasing pack perhaps Turkey's Besiktas would be best placed to march to the title. They too have a bye into the second round of the playoffs, where they will meet the winners of the tie between Germany's Fraport and Pinar Karsiyaka, also of Turkey. Fraport of Frankfurt who are the rank outsiders left in the competition, a juicy all-Turkish tie is surely on the cards.

The leading scorer in the qualifying rounds (even though he did not play all fourteen games) was powerful US-born forward Nicolas Minnerath of Russia's Avtodor Saratov. Despite having Minnerath in their ranks Saratov are not thought likely to challenge for the Champions League title, and have to negotiate a tricky tie with EWE Baskets of Germany if they want to progress. Saratov could only manage a 7-7 record in qualifying, whereas EWE Baskets ended up 10-4 to finish third in Group C. The winners of this tie will face Banvit of Turkey in the next round. Banvit finished second in Group A behind Monaco.

Group B winners Le Mans Sarthe of France will have to await the outcome of the tie between Dinamo Sassari of Italy and CEZ Nymburk from the Czech basketball league before they know who they will be facing. This preliminary tie is one of the closest to call, although Sassari might be considered the slight favourites, even though Nymburk finished the season with the better record. Either way, Le Mans must be considered the most likely team of the three to reach the final eight.

Of the remaining ties, Greece's Aris will play SIG Strasbourg of France for the right to meet ASVEL, also of France, in the round of sixteen. PAOK of Greece will meet Serbia's Partizan in the hope of progressing to the next round where fancied Ibnerostar Tenerife of Spain await. Maccabi RAND Media of Israel will play MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg of Germany, with the winner of that tie going on to play Neptunas of Lithuanuia, while Latvia's Ventspils will take on Italy's Umana Reyer Venezia to progress to play Avellino, also of Italy.
All ties will take place over two rounds on the 7th or 8th and the 21st or 22nd of February, 2017.
