Ten years ago Belarusian women basketball team burst on the high level of European basketball. They qualified for Eurobasket-2007, which happened first time in their history and after that they took the third place. It was the astonishing but not the coincidental success for Belarusian basketball and for players. It was proved in next ten years as they hadn't missed any big tournament, except Olympic tournament 2012 in London, and usually had shown a good game. Belarus wanted to come back to Olympic Games, which was supposed to be the final chord of current team according to the coach Anatoly Buyalskiy . Therefore the main task was to qualify in Rio. It couldn't be unrealizable. All players had a good season in their clubs. Yelena Leuchanka (196-C-83, college: W.Virginia) played in Goandong Dolphins and made 20.6ppg, 13.0rpg, 3.1apg, 1.7spg with FGP: 54.1%, FT: 76.3% in 25 games; after she came to Girne University, where she made 11.2ppg, 9.8rpg, 3.6apg, 1.2spg with FGP: 49.5%, FT: 64.5% in 10 games. Anastasiya Veremeenko (194-C-87) played in Fenerbahce, which won the third place in Euroleague and become the champion in strong Turkish Woman Basketball League; she made 7.3ppg, 6.0rpg, 2.8apg with FGP: 60.3%, 3PT: 40.8%, FT: 76.9% in 35 games of Turkish League and 7.1ppg, 5.9rpg, 2.1apg, 1.3spg, 1.7bpg with FGP: 53.0%, 3PT: 35.7%, FT: 55.6% in 18 games of Euroleague. Tatsiana Likhtarovich (180-G/F-88) made a good season in Hungarian club Aluinvent DVTK Miskolc, which came to the quarter-final of Eurocup, to the semifinal of Hungarian championship and won the Hungarian cup. She made 7.5ppg, 2.3rpg, 1.8apg, 1.3spg with FGP: 39.3%, 3PT: 39.1%, FT: 81.0% in 26 games of domestic tournament and 7.8ppg, 2.8rpg, 2.3apg, 1.7spg with FGP: 48.9%, 3PT: 37.9%, FT: 66.7% in 12 games of Eurocup. Lindsey Harding (173-G-84, college: Duke) started her season in Yakin Dogu Universitesi BGD, where she made 11.6ppg, 3.4rpg, 2.4apg with FGP: 41.7%, 3FGP: 50.0%, FT: 85.7% in 5 games; after she changed club and started playing in Dynamo Kursk, which came to quarter-final in Euroleague and made 6.2ppg, 3.5rpg, 2.7apg, 1.3spg with FGP: 43.3%, 3PT: 9.1%, FT: 68.4% in 11 games of Euroleague and 8.0ppg, 3.1rpg, 3.3apg, 1.4spg with FGP: 54.7%, 3PT: 28.6%, FT: 81.8% in 14 games of domestic championship; after that she made a successful attempt to sign a contract in WNBA club, firstly with New York Liberty, where she made 5.7ppg, 4.4rpg, 5.7apg, 0.3spg in 5 games; after she signed in Phoenix Mercury, where she had 10.7ppg, 4.3rpg, 5.2apg, 1.3stg with FGP: 38.9%, 3PT: 50.0%, FT: 84.2% in 11 games. Karerina Snytsina (188-F-76, agency: Star Basket) played in Hatay BSB, which won the second place in Turkish championship, and made 11.7ppg, 4.7rpg, 2.5apg, 1.3spg with FGP: 43.7%, 3PT: 33.8%, FT: 91.7% in 32 games. Tatyana Troina (188-SF-74, agency: SIG) played in Basket-Gdynia, which took the 5-th place in Poland-BLK and the 2-nd in EEWBL; she made 6.4ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.5apg with FGP: 46.8%, 3PT: 36.5%, FT: 91.7% in 24 games in Polish league and 8.3ppg, 2.6rpg, 1.4apg, 1.3spg with FGP: 47.7%, 3PT: 42.1%, FT: 90.0% in international tournament. Maryia Papova (189-F-94) (189-F-94) layed in Enisey, which came to semi-final of Eurocup; she made 8.9ppg, 3.7rpg, 1.2apg with FGP: 45.9%, 3PT: 13.9%, FT: 85.7% in 17 games in domestic champ and 11.3ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.0apg with FGP: 47.2%, 3PT: 20.7%, FT: 78.6% in 8 games in Eurocup. These players became the main persons in Olympic game and had big minutes in qualification and on the group stage. Other players, such as Nataliya Trafimava (185-F-79) , Volha Ziuzkova (172-PG-83) , Natalia Anufryienka (174-G-85) , Ksenia Malashko (182-C/F-00) , Yuliya Rytsikava (182-F-86) were in deep rotation but they deserved their place in national team because of great regular season. In qualify tournament Belarus set the fifth place - they won their group with Nigeria (victory 71:60) and South Korea (loss 65:66), lost quarter-final China 70:84, but won the last two games in Argentina (84:44) and South Korea (59:36). It was mean that Belarus stamped tickets to Rio. The main players on this stage were Yelena Leuchanka - 12.6ppg, 10.8rpg, 3.2apg; Anastasiya Veremeenko - 11.4ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.6apg; Lindsey Harding - 13.8ppg, 2.6rpg, 4.0apg; and Mariya Papova made 8.8ppg, 3.8rpg, 0.4apg from bench. Qualification gave a chance to see, what basketball Belarusian's team would show on the Olympic Games. There were three options: first and the main - pass to post, where Belarusian backcourt players (usually Leuchanka or Veremeenko) scored; second - open frontcourt player after long possession take the ball to the basket; third - pass to open player on perimeter and shot. In defense they usually used man-to-man ranking. The other important point was a short rotation from Belarusian's coach - only 7 players had more than 15 minutes per game. Before the trip to Rio it became known that Natalia Anufrienko and Ksenia Malashko wouldn't come with team because of trauma and Eurobasket-16 respectively. They were replaced to Maryia Filonchyk (189-PF-92) and Alexandra Tarasova (191-C-91). The main task for Belarusian's team on the main Olympic tournament was to contend for play-off. However, the first game was lost Japan, one of direct competitors, in clutch - 73:77. After that players mobilized and got through the incredible game with one of the strongest team in woman basketball - France. Only buzzer-beater from French player Olivia Epoupa (165-PG-53, agency: Comsport) allowed Les Bleue to win - 73:72. This meant, that only 3 victory in a row provided Belarus play-off. And they won the first match in series - Brazil was defeated 65:63, but after they lost Turkey again in clutch - 71:74 and bid farewell with chances for quarter-final. The last game Belarusian's team conceded Australia - 74:66. The main players on this tournament were Lindsey Harding - 13.8ppg, 4.0rpg, 5apg; Yelena Leuchanka - 13.2ppg, 9rpg, 2.2apg, Tatsiana Likhtarovich - 11.8ppg, 3.4rpg, 3.4apg, Anastasiya Veremeenko - 8.2ppg, 7rpg, 3.6apg and Tatyana Troina made 8.4ppg, 3rpg, 1.2apg from bench. There are couple reasons, why Belarusian's team dropped out after group stage. First - the short rotation. Only 7 players played more than 15 minutes per game, in the same way Tatsiana Likhtarovich played 38.2 minutes per game, Lindsey Harding - 35.2, Leuchanka - 30.2. Other players had very little or no time to play. This resulted in lack of strength of main players in clutch. Second - the absence of leader in clutch time, where most of games were lost. Third - misfortune as most of games were close but only one of them was won. The other single not good fact was lack of time for young players. In qualifying tournament 16-years old Ksenia Malashko played only 5 minutes with Argentina, which was defeated 84:44 and didn't play in other games. The same thing happened with 22-years old Filonchyk, except she didn't play any minute on Olympic Games. And if Malashko could be considered as very young for this level, Filonchyk could take real benefits for team. On the one hand, she is unaccommodating player and always tries to press opponent, on the other hand, it could be an experience of real challenge on the adult level for her. So that, she was able to help team on the second-third quarter and bring the experience for the future games in national team. Nevertheless, Olympic tournament was a great achievement for players and final chord by some of them. So now players will back to their clubs or will sign contracts with other clubs. From this season will increase the number of players in Turkish championship. To Katerina Snytsina, who play in runner up's team Hatay, and Anastasiya Veremeenko, who play in champion's team Fenerbahce, signed Maryia Papova, who will play in Galatasaray. It will be a great experience for Papova, as her club is one of contenders and previous season they gained 3-rd place in domestic championship and came to quarter-final in Euroleage. In the same way it will be a great chance to work with Marina Maljkovic (agency: BeoBasket ) - head coach of Turkish club, whose resume had such achievements as champion in Serbia (twice with Hemofarm and four times with Partizan), winner of Serbian Cup (twice with Hemofarm and twice with Partizan), champion of Woman Adriatic League (twice with Partizan), 3 place in French championship with Union Lyon Basket Feminin and winner of Eurobasket-2015 and 3-rd place on Olympic Games 2016 with Serbia. This experience will help Papova to become a leader of renewed Belarusian team. Aleksandra Tarasova (168-G-88) signed contract with TSV 1880 Wasserburg, champion in German League and winner of German Cup in season 2015/2016. Other players will start their season in previous clubs. For this moment only 5 players don't have team - Tatsiana Likhtarovich, Volha Ziuzkova, Yelena Leuchanka, Tatyana Troina and Maryia Filonchyk. The next game Belarusian team will hold against Belgium 19 November in qualification tournament for Eurobasket-2017.
TSV 1880 Wasserburg (DBBL) added to their roster 28-year old Belarusian international point guard Alexandra Tarasava (171-88). It is actually her comeback to TSV 1880 Wasserburg as she has played here before. Tarasava is not a newcomer in German League where she played last season at SV Halle Lions in the DBBL. In 25 games she recorded very impressive stats: 23.5ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.0apg and 1.9spg. A very spectacular season in her career as she was voted to Eurobasket.com All-German DBBL 1st T... [read more]
