Charleroi continued its domination in Belgian basketball. They handed
59-53 loss to Aalstar tonight winning the Finals with perfect 3-0. It
means that Charleroi won their fourth
straight championship title. The also were No.1 in 1996, 1997, 1998,
1999, 2003 and 2004.
The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 23-14. But
Okapi Aalstar won second period 18-15. However it was not enough to take
a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last
minutes when Spirou Charleroi won last quarter 13-9. It was a great
evening for American guard
Kyle Weaver (198-86, college:
Washington St., agency:
Interperformances) who led his team to a victory scoring 14 points
and 7 rebounds. International forward
Christophe Beghin (207-80, agency:
Court
Side) helped adding 10 points. Spirou Charleroi's coach
Giovanni Bozzi used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters
a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was
American forward
Christopher Copeland (203-84, college:
Colorado, agency:
540
Sports) with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds
and the other American import guard
Stanley Burrell (190-84) scored 13 points and 5 rebounds.
Charleroi was the regular season champion with 25-7 record. They
advanced to Playoff Finals after 2-0 win against Oostende in the Semis
(71-59, 70-74).
Mons edges Oostende in thrilling 2011 Belgian
Cup Final - Apr 25, 2011
Union Mons Hainaut has won the Belgian Cup
today. In a very thrilling final game played at the Lotto Arena
in Antwerp, Union Mons Hainaut defeated defending Cup winner BC Oostende
68-66.
After a well balanced first quarter, Union Mons Hainaut of Coach
Arik Shivek (agency:
Avi Zilberman) took a larger lead of ten points (31-21) but
Matt Lojeski (198-G-85, college:
Hawaii) led Oostende to a a fantastic comeback mainly thanks to
great hits from the three-point range.
After the half (33-33), BC Oostende ran down the floor at a higher speed
and did shoot with more efficiency. The Northern Belgian team even took
a 6-point advantage at the end of the third quarter (50-56).
In the final seconds of this very intense match-up, Oostende turned the
ball over and the Foxes of Mons Hainaut took advantage of that.
With around 30 seconds left on the clock, the game was tied at 66-66.
With 14 seconds remaining, Mons' forward
Ronell Taylor (196-G-82, college:
UAB)
hit a jumper to make 68-66. Oostende's center
Will Thomas (200-F-86, agency:
Interperformances) missed two crucial free-throws with a bit more
than one second remaining on the clock but the rebound was missed by the
Mons' players. After a last time-out taken by BCO Head Coach
Jean-Marc Jaumin , the last BCO jump shot attempted by
Matt Lojeski on a alley-oop was not successful and the 2000 fans of
Mons Hainaut who travelled to Antwerp to attend the Cup final could
party as their favourite team won the title. Union Mons Hainaut had
already won the Cup in 2006 while Oostende had already won the Cup 12
times.
BCO center
Thomas Van Den Spiegel (214-C-78), bothered by a back injury, played
only three minutes in this game.
