Despite a strong start (23-8 after six minutes in the first quarter), Division II team Cuva Houthalen could not avoid a loss against Ethias League leader Okapi Aalstar in this first quarter-final leg. Okapi US players Jason Clark (188-G-90, college: Georgetown) and Ryan Thompson (198-G-89, college: Rider) led their team for a great comeback. When Cuva's US player Jason Westrol (191-G-88, college: Bentley) was sent to the bench (technical foul called by referees) in the third quarter, Okapi had a great 0-10 run to make 62-69. The hosts never came back into the game afterwards. Liege Basket vs. BC Telenet Oostende: 83-93
Pierre-Antoine Gillet (201-F-91) was missing on the home side and only Quentin Serron (190-G-90) was absent on the visitors' side. Despite a favourable final score for BCO of coach Dario Gjergja (agency: Beo Basket ), Liege Basket played very well in this game. The home team could not avoid a strong start by the men of Gjergja who were led by Wesley Wilkinson (207-PF-84, college: Nebraska) in offense. The visitors'strong performance in the first quarter made the difference in this match-up. Special mention to Belgian talent Ioann Iarochevitch (206-C-89, agency: LBM Management) of Liege Basket for his fantastic stats in this game: 27 points (8/11 from two-point range, 2/3 from three-point range, 5/7 from the free-throw line), 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists and 1 steal. Gembo BBC (+5) vs. Belfius Mons Hainaut: 94-90
2012 Division II champions of BBC Gembo Borgerhout had eliminated Ethias League's team Port of Antwerp Giants in the previous eighth-final round of the 2012-13 Belgian Cup. In the first leg of the quarter-finals (two legs, aggregate), the Division II team defeated another squad of the Ethias League: Belfius Mons Hainaut. Special mention to Domien Loubry (186-G-85) who was very efficient in offense for the hometeam. Thanks to great start (42-14 was the largest lead for the home team), Gembo always seemed able to surprise their guests. Despite 76-77 on a shot by Belfius' US playmaker Jonathan Wallace (187-G-86, agency: Pro One Sports, college: Georgetown), the hosts managed to control the end of the game and win it. VOO RBC Verviers Pepinster vs. Leuven Bears: 92-77
Great win for the Pepins of coach Nenad Trajkovic . With a 15-point margin in favour of RBC, the men of Nenad Trajkovic have a big advantage before the second leg. Without little mistakes and turnovers in the last minutes of the game, they could even have had a better margin. Nevertheless, the Bears are always tough to defeat at the Sportoase in Leuven and therefore have still their word to say in this double confrontation of the Belgian Cup quarter-finals. They recently had a convincing win against Spirou Charleroi in an Ethias League's regular season game played at the Sportoase. Score evolution: 25-19, 41-34, 69-55 and 92-77. Best scorers: Verviers Pepinster: C. Ferguson 12, J. Anderson 12, J. Green 24, Y. Moray 17, Y. Baeri 3, S. Moris 9, N. Aleksandrov 7, D. Tubak 8. Bears: G. Robinson 23, J. Dukes 7, I. Aska 23, B. American Power forward Brandon Ubel (209-F/C-91, agency: Pensack Sports) put on an amazing game in the last round for Brussels, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 32. The 25-year old player was the main contributor (25 points, nine rebounds and three assists) to his team's victory, helping them to outclass Kangoeroes (#4, 17-15) with 40-point margin 114-74. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Brussels maintains the 3rd position in Belgian Euromillions League. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Brussels will need more victories to improve their 19-13 record. In the team's last game Ubel had a remarkable 81.8% from 2-point range. It's his second year at Brussels and it's hard to imagine this team without him. Former University of Nebraska star has very solid stats this year. Ubel is in league's top in rebounds (5th best: 6.6rpg) and averages impressive 57.5% FGP.
The second best player in last round's games was 24-year old American Seth Tuttle (203-F-92) of Limburg United. Tuttle had a very good evening with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Of course he led Limburg United to another comfortable win outscoring slightly higher-ranked Aalstar (#5, 17-16) 100-73. Limburg United's 6th position in the standings has not changed. His team lost some distance to top teams. But 16-16 record is not bad and everything may still change. Tuttle is a newcomer at Limburg United, but is already one of team's top players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 15.3ppg (#5). His other stats are also decent: 5.9rpg and 3.6apg.
Third on the list of top players last round was American Gavin Ware (206-C/F-93) of league's second-best Antwerp. Ware scored 19 points and grabbed thirteen rebounds (!!!). Despite Ware's great performance Antwerp lost 78-83 to the lower-ranked Spirou (#7, 15-17). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Antwerp needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 20 victories and 12 lost games. Ware has a great season in Belgium. After 32 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 13.6ppg (9th best) and rebounds with 6.5rpg (6th best).
Other top performing players last week: 4. Aleksander Lichodzijewski (204-PF-84) of Brussels - 25 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists 5. J.J. Mann (198-G/F-91) of Mons-Hainaut - 19 points and 12 rebounds 6. Corey Walden (188-G-92) of Oostende - 14 points and 6 assists 7. Pape Badji (208-F/C-92) of Kangoeroes - 22 points and 9 rebounds 8. Jordan Swing (198-F-90) of Limburg United - 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists 9. D.J. Richardson (190-G-91) of Spirou - 21 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists 10. Jerime Anderson (187-PG-89) of Limburg United - 11 points, 2 rebounds and 13 assists
The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
