Kangoeroes Boom vs. Sint-Jan Antwerp: 109-99 (after OT)
Sint-Jan was never far from their hosts who needed one overtime to get rid of their opponents. The Jantjes of Steve Cornelis had a nice comeback just before the end of the fourth quarter and Naim El Kounchar (191-G-94) hit a three-pointer from downtown to tie the game at 92-92 just on the buzzer. This was not enough and Kangoeroes' shooter Dieter Souveryns (193-F/G-83) hit three baskets from long range to make it rather comfortable for his team in the overtime. Two players finished with high scoring performances: Kabo forward Dieter Souveryns had 36 points and Sint-Jan's top-shooter Senne Geukens (190-G-83) scored 34 points. What a game! Cuva Houthalen vs. Excelsior Brussels: 90-83
The American armada of Cuva Houthalen led by Jason Westrol (191-G-88, college: Bentley) and Ronnie McCollum (192-G-78, agency: Two Points, college: Centenary, LA) made the difference in this game. Excelsior Brussels was outrebounded offensively: 19-10. Two Cuva centers, Dario Clemente (204-C-86) and Odell Hodge (204-C/F-73, college: ODU), were very efficient at rebounding. If you add the very slow start by the visitors in the first quarter (16-6), you will quickly understand that much energy has been spent by the Brussels' team to come back into the game. Excelsior did it very well and the score evolution in the last 20 minutes shows that it remained a very close game: 35-34, 60-50, 63-59, 69-68 and 71-70... Xavier Collette (185-PG-85, agency: LBM Management) and Gregory De Pooter (196-F-84) hit crucial shots to keep the visiting team of coach Serge Crevecoeur in the race. Cuva eventually finished on top mainly thanks to a great efficiency from the free-throw line in the last minutes of the game. The good news for Excelsior this weekend is the arrival of former Belgian LionRandy Oveneke (201-F-86) who already had good stats for his first game against Cuva Houthalen: 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. A very encouraging performance for Oveneke who will play for Excelsior until the end of the season. Score evolution: 18-12, 35-34, 63-59 and 90-83. Best scorers: Cuva: R. McCollum 21, J. Westrol 27, H. Vanwijn 2, B. Tracey 19, D. Clemente 10, O. Hodge 11. Excelsior: X. Collette 17, N. Verrept 7, M. Depuydt 5, J. Van Haevermaet 3, G. De Pooter 21, L. Maesfrancx 8, R. Oveneke 14, S. Semijejero 8.
Essor Charleroi (Spirou B) vs. CEP Fleurus: 57-72
Although the men of coach Pascal Angilis were ready to welcome their neighbours of CEP Fleurus, the young Essor boys clearly had the role of outsiders before the game. Boris Penninck (202-C-88), a former CEP player who is much talked about in Ethias League's Stella Artois Leuven Bears nowadays, was particularly motivated to play against his former club. An attendance of only 40 people showed up for this so-called derby at the Salle du Sentier de l'Epee in Jumet last Sunday morning. Nevertheless, the few attending CEP supporters made much noise to boost their favourite team. After a rather close first quarter, CEP F took a larger lead in the second one. CEP center Jordan Garvin (203-C-89, college: York, NB) was given a chance to play in this second quarter. But too bad... He stayed only three minutes on the floor and had to sit on the bench afterwards because of an ankle injury. It was enough time for him to score 4 points though. His mate Thomas Bauwens (192-F-86) showed the way and finished as best scorer with 19 points in this game. The third and fourth quarters were played at a slow rhythm and the visitors managed to keep their advantage until the final buzzer. Lambot 4, J. Dedave 2, N. Jankovic 7, J. Stas 5, A. Zuccolini 8, B. Penninck 12, T. Lefevre 3, A. Eyenga 3. CEP F: A. Marion 7, J. Garvin 4, K. Jonniaux 4, C. Manzanza 2, L. Pourtoit 6, A. Chada 5, T. Bauwens 19, L. Hazard 8, S. Muric 4, C. Ilongo 13.
Sint-Niklase Condors vs. Bent Schoenen Waregem: 75-74 (after OT)
With much enthusiasm, both teams offered a very thrilling game to the fans. Through the whole game, nobody in the attendance could tell who would win the game. And it needed one overtime for a decision to be made. With 6 seconds remaining in the overtime, BS Waregem had the last ball possession. Ahmet Gueye (203-C/F-82, college: Hawaii) missed a shot in the paint and the home crowd could celebrate. Both coaches Sven Declercq and Steve Ibens deserve a big thank for offering such a great and intense game. Score evolution: 19-23, 36-37, 49-50, 67-67 and 75-74. Best scorers: Condors: E. Lasisi 17, N. Maris 13, S. Vermeulen 12, B. Bogaert 12, J. P. De Decker 5, D. Bovoy 7, B. De Beukeleer 5, J. Gerlo 4, I. Johnson 2. BS Waregem: A. Steinbach 21, B. Samaey 18, T. Foucart 17, O. Foucart 12, A. Gueye 4, R. Loontiens 2.
BasKet Tongeren vs. BBC Haantjes Oudenaarde: 87-83 (after OT)
The game played at the Pibo in Tongeren was tied at 79-79 at the end of the fourth quarter. Peter Pipeleers (202-F/C-80) and Joeri Moonen (205-F-84) were true leaders for BasKet Tongeren in the second half. New BBC Haantjes' coach Sam Verstraete (185-SG-81, replacing Alain Defraigne who decided to resign last week) could have started with a great win away but BasKet Tongeren finished stronger in the overtime. Score at the half: 35-32.
Point Chaud Sprimont vs. Port of Antwerp Giants II: 86-57
This 100% Belgian game ended up with a rather easy success for the home team of Pascal Horrion. Special mention to Dorian Marchant (198-F-93) for the losing side. Frederic Delsaute (191-F-86) finished the game as best scorer with 18 points for the hosts. Best scorers: Sprimont: F. Manset 2, F. Delsaute 17, J.-B. Thome 8, G. Vrancken 10, F. Forthomme 5, J. 25-year old power forward Brandon Ubel (209-F/C-91, agency: Pensack Sports) had a very impressive game in the last round for Brussels and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 10. He had a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, while his team beat Aalstar (#4, 6-4) 88-81. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Brussels is placed at 3rd position in Belgian league. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Brussels will need more victories to improve their 6-3 record. In the team's last game Ubel had a remarkable 62.5% from 2-point range. It's his second year at Brussels and it's hard to imagine this team without him. University of Nebraska graduate has very impressive stats this year. Ubel is in league's top in points (9th best: 14.7ppg), rebounds (8th best: 6.3rpg) and averages solid 66.2% FGP.
Second best performed player last round was Seth Tuttle (203-F-92) of Limburg United. He is American forward in his first season at Limburg United. In the last game Tuttle recorded impressive 13 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Of course he led Limburg United to another comfortable win 93-75 over slightly higher-ranked Leuven (#9, 3-7) being unquestionably team leader. The game was between two teams which are definitely not main contenders for the title. Limburg United is still at the dead bottom 10th position. 8 lost games are too many comparing to just two victories Limburg United managed to get this year. Tuttle is a newcomer at Limburg United and quickly became one of team's most reliable players.
Third place about best performers goes to John Tofi (203-C/F-84, agency: Pensack Sports) of Aalstar (#4). Tofi showcased his all-around game by recording 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the last round. Despite Tofi's great performance Aalstar lost 81-88 to #3 ranked Brussels. But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates especially in such crucial game. The last thing Aalstar needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 6 victories and 4 lost games. Tofi has a great season in Belgium. After 10 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 15.6ppg (6th best).
