The second legs of the Belgian Cup quarter-finals were played last weekend.
On Friday night, Okapi Aalstar welcomed Division II team Cuva Houthalen. The guests of coach Brian Lynch gave a hard time to Ethias League leaders and even led 50-56 at the half. This game was obviously one further evidence that the gap between the Ethias League and Division II keeps shrinking. Ronnie McCollum (192-G-78, agency: Two Points, college: Centenary, LA), Brian Tracey (195-F-88) and Jason Westrol (191-G-88, college: Bentley) even gave the Limburgers a 82-87 advantage in the last quarter. It was without counting on the fantastic reaction by Okapi players Ryan Thompson (198-G-89, college: Rider), Noah Hartsock (203-F-87, college: BYU) and Larry Anderson (195-G-89, college: Long Beach St.) who scored crucial baskets in the last minutes of the game.
On Saturday, RBC Verviers Pepinster convinced many observers that we should count on them for the rest of the season. The Pepins won in Leuven after a real thriller. The Leuven Bears were outscored in the paint. RBC Verviers Pepinster scored 42 points in the paint and had a total of 34 rebounds (while the Bears grabbed only 16 rebounds). RBC's coach Nenad Trajkovic and staff were particularly happy with Dragan Tubak (217-C-87)'s performance in this game. The other coach, Jurgen Van Meerbeeck (agency: LBM Management ), was very disappointed after this result for the Bears. RBC Verviers Pepinster will play Okapi Aalstar in the Belgian Cup semis.
Also on Saturday, Belfius Mons Hainaut gave no chance to their Division II guests of BBC Gembo Borgerhout. BBC Gembo of coach Stefan "Sappe" Sappenberghs (also a former player of Union Mons Hainaut) had won the first leg 94-90 last week. The performance of Gembo star Domien Loubry (186-G-85) was not sufficient this time. Also to be mentioned: the participation of four Belfius Mons Hainaut II players in this success -- Lorenzo Giancaterino (190-F/G-90), Loic Schwartz (198-G/F-92), Amaury Gorgemans (212-C-92) and Kevin Tumba (192-F/G-91) --. Belfius Mons Hainaut of coach Yves Defraigne put an end to the nice Cinderella story of Gembo in front of a full attendance at the mons.arena. Finally, BC Telenet Oostende was almost sure to be qualified at the half (46-38) of the second leg game against Liege Basket played on Sunday afternoon. Pierre-Antoine Gillet (201-F-91) was still missing for Liege Basket. Despite a good start, Liege Basket could not resist against a well-balanced team of BC Oostende led by Mario Stojic (198-G/F-80, agency: Interperformances) and Matt Lojeski (198-G-85, college: Hawaii) in offense. The BCO men of Dario Gjergja (agency: Beo Basket ) will now face Belfius Mons Hainaut in the Belgian Cup semi-finals.
