Excelsior Brussels vs. BBC Haantjes Oudenaarde: 87-76
At the Sporthal in Neder-over-Hembeek, the Brussels' team ended the first quarter in a poor manner. After 10-10 on the scoreboard, BBC Oudenaarde made a first break (16-25 after 10 minutes). The Haantjes of veteran player Joeri Bourdeaux (190-F/G-78) and experienced center Mikhail Linskens (213-C-87, agency: R.H.Consultancy, college: Wyoming) were still in front at the half: 39-44. Nevertheless, Excelsior had played much better in the second quarter, especially in defense. The visitors coached by Sam Verstraete were never behind and, even at 55-55, kept playing well. The Haantjes with a rather efficient Jean Salumu (193-F-90) in offense were leading by 2 points after 30 minutes in this game. Thanks to a great presence by Randy Oveneke (201-F-86) and Sam Semijejero (195-PF-77) at the rebound as well as the hard-working players Maxime De Puydt (192-F-92), Xavier Collette (185-PG-85, agency: LBM Management), Gregory De Pooter (196-F-84) and Jeroen Van Haevermaet (192-SG-86), Excelsior of coach Serge Crevecoeur was suddenly able to play quicker. After 67-67 in the beginning of the fourth quarter, Excelsior Brussels finished strongly and eventually won the game indeed. To be noted: Joeri Bourdeaux hit 6 three-pointers for the losing side in this game. Score evolution: 16-25, 39-44, 61-63 and 87-76. Best scorers: Excelsior: X. Collette 12, N. Verrept 4, M. Cuva Houthalen vs. BasKet Tongeren: 77-86
From the tip-off to the final buzzer, BasKet Tongeren remained concentrated and stayed well organized in this game played on Sunday afternoon. The gap reached 10 units after 7 minutes of play: 12-22. In the second quarter, BasKet Tongeren of coach Ludo Horions even took a larger lead by 17 points (21-38) although the four US players of Cuva Houthalen were present on the court. Cuva's player Chiel Koonings (180-PG-90) got in foul trouble in the third quarter and BasKet Tongeren, with experienced players Herbert Baert (204-F-75) and Peter Pipeleers (202-F/C-80), kept playing well. Cuva of coach Brian Lynch reduced the gap early in the fourth quarter (69-73 with 6'28" remaining on the clock). Anyway, Ludo Horions' squad eventually reacted well and recovered quickly. BasKet Tongeren's players offered a well-deserved success to their fans in this Limburg derby. This was the first loss at home for Cuva Houthalen this season. Score evolution: 16-30, 30-44, 52-71 and 77-86.
Bent Schoenen Waregem vs. Gent Dragons: 79-76
Flemish basketball fans could attend a game with a lot of ups and downs on both sides. After a first excellent quarter, the hosts of Waregem let their guests come back into the game. There was a real duel in offense between Arne Steinbach (182-PG-92) of BS Waregem and Thomas Van De Vondel (194-F/G-80) of Gent Dragons. The BS Waregem's guard hit 10 points in the first minutes of the third quarter but the Gentenaar shooter brought his team back in the race right afterwards. In a real thrilling end of game, Arne Steinbach made the difference from the free-throw line. Score evolution: 18-10, 40-42, 62-68 and 79-76. Best scorers: BS Waregem: A. Steinbach 28, T. Sint-Niklase Condors vs. Gembo BBC: 79-92
Gembo had to play strongly in Sint-Niklaas. The home team of coach Steve Ibens started well but Nick Celis (194-G-88) allowed his team to stay close in the first quarter. Laurens Jansen (200-C-83) was particularly efficient for the visitors. His team Gembo took the lead in the second quarter. Thanks to collective efforts and a tough defense, Gembo of coach Stefan Sappenberghs reached a larger favourable margin. The visitors managed well in the last quarter and Nick Celis, again, converted crucial shots in the last minutes of the game. Sint-Jan Antwerp vs. Port of Antwerp Giants II: 88-59
This weekend, a new Antwerp derby was held at the Arenahal in Deurne: Sint-Jan hosted the Giants II. Despite a very good start by the young Giants, the Jantjes of coach Steve Cornelis eventually won the game mainly thanks to their excellent second half in offense. Sint-Jan's scorer Senne Geukens (190-G-83) was well present but sick. Vinnie Haerbos (180-PG-90), injured (foot), was missing for Sint-Jan. Special mention to Giants' young talents Maarten Rademakers (205-C/F-91) and Dorian Marchant (198-F-93) who keep on learning in Division II this season. Kangoeroes Boom vs. Essor Charleroi (Spirou B): 86-58
This game was played at the Sportcomplex De Schalk in Boom last Saturday evening. If they had played at the same rhythm all the way during 40 minutes, the Kabo team of coach Tom Poppe could have scored over 100 points last weekend. French player of Essor Charleroi Yann Siegwarth (184-PG-93) got injured in the second half of the game. To be mentioned: young Serbian talent Nikola Jankovic (205-PF-94) of Essor/Spirou Charleroi is listed among the 10 candidates for FIBA Europe Young Men's Player of the Year 2013. You can vote for him or any other candidate via http://www.fibaeurope.com/cid_xomKo3xWHM2Kq1C8NQLzi2.html. Tom Poppe also made the choice to let some young Kangoeroes have some playing time last Saturday. This led to some interesting performances in offense by Belgian talents Matthias Bessems (191-F-91) and Mathias Crab. Also to be noted: Ethias League's team Belgacom Spirou Charleroi still has Jason Fontenet (178-PG-82, college: Oregon St.) on tryout. Fontenet only played in two Eurocup games for Charleroi averaging 11.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg this season. He could probably play for Essor Charleroi in the next few weeks until a decision is made on his future with the team. Score at the half: 49-31. Best scorers: Kangoeroes: S. Bellin 5, M. Bessems 7, W. Dobbelaere 24, D. Souveryns 20, W. Van Schil 4, K. De Wit 4, M. Crab 4, M. Gorremans 9, D. Dhaens 14, J. Verlinden 3, A. Mollekens 2. Essor: Y. Siegwarth 13, Y. Diop 6, N. Here is a great win for the young team of coach Patrick Verdun! The Division II MVP of the Week award can be given to Emmanuel Lecomte (175-G-95) who scored 41 points in this game played last Friday. The young Foxes are now having a great 7-7 record this season. Best scorers: Sprimont: G. Vrancken 13, J.-B. Thome 13, G. Hertay 12, F. Manset 2, F. Delsaute 20, F. Flagothier 10, G. Donnay 7, A. Bousmanne 1. Mons Hainaut II: E. Lecomte 41, L. Giancaterino 5, L. 27-year old forward Bart Maesen (198-F-89) had a very impressive game in the last round for Houthalen and receives a Eurobasket.com Top Division I Player of the Week award for round 25. He had the game-high 19 points adding six rebounds and six assists for Houthalen in his team's victory, helping them to beat Giants B (#8, 11-15) 72-62. Houthalen maintains the 5th position in Belgian Top Division I. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Houthalen will need more victories to improve their 15-10 record. In the team's last game Maesen had a remarkable 57.1% from 2-point range. He has many years of experience at Houthalen, through which he has constantly improved. Maesen has impressive league stats. He is in league's top in points (9th best: 15.7ppg), assists (7th best: 3.4apg) and averages solid 60.2% FGP.
Second best performed player last round was Francois Lhoest (196-F/C-85) of Ninane. He is former international forward in his 9th season at Ninane. In the last game Lhoest recorded impressive double-double of 21 points and 16 rebounds. Bad luck as Ninane lost that game 82-99 to slightly higher-ranked Giants B (#8, 11-15). Ninane managed to keep the same 9th spot in the standings. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 10-14 record. Lhoest is one of the most experienced players at Ninane and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 20.0ppg (#1). His other stats are also decent: 13.7rpg and 3.6apg.
Third place about best performers goes to center Pieter De Cock (198-C-93) of Ekeren (#13). De Cock scored 23 points and grabbed five rebounds. Despite De Cock's great performance Ekeren lost 84-92 to the higher-ranked Royal Brussels (#7, 11-13). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. Ekeren can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have rather bad season and 6-17 record places them close to the bottom of the standings. Too bad for De Cock he does not play for a better team. But maybe if he did, his season stats would not be that high. De Cock has a very solid season. In 22 games in Belgium he scored 11.7ppg. He also has 5.5rpg and FGP: 54.0%.
Other top performing players last week: 4. Alexander Schepens (191-G/F-93) of Ieper - 28 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists 5. The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
