Here is the weekly review of the top performing Belgian players, who play currently abroad.


Aleksander Lichodzijewski

   #1. This week's number one is former international center Aleksander Lichodzijewski (202-84, currently plays in Poland). He led Polpharma to a victory over one of league's weakest teams Start Gdynia (4-11) 80-73 in the Polish TBL last Sunday. Lichodzijewski was MVP of the game. He scored 25 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. SKS Polpharma-Pakmet Starogard Gd. (6-9) is placed eighth in the TBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Lichodzijewski's first season with the team. This year Lichodzijewski averages: 7.1ppg, 4.3rpg, 2FGP: 38.7%, 3FGP: 36.8% and FT: 85.7%. He has a dual citizenship: Belgian and Polish. Former Sanex Antwerp Giants starter played for the Belgian senior national team five years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international forward Axel Hervelle (205-83, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB. Hervelle could not help Gescrap BB (10-6) to beat Valencia Basket (12-4). He recorded 7 points and added 4 passes. Gescrap BB was edged in an overtime 113-111 on the road by the higher-ranked Valencia Basket (#3). Hervelle's overall stats this season are: 8.4ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.9apg, 2FGP: 60.2%(56-93), 3FGP: 14.3%. He is in the roster of the Belgian senior national team.

   #3. The Belgian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international point guard Jonathan Tabu (190-85, currently plays in Italy). Tabu contributed to Cantu's victory against the closely-ranked Armani Milano (7-7) 84-76 in the Italian SerieA last Sunday. He scored 8 points, made 3 passes and 3 steals in 26 minutes. Mapooro Cantu (10-4) is placed fourth in the SerieA. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Tabu has relatively good stats this year: 10.4ppg, 4.4rpg, 3.9apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 48.1%, 3FGP: 45.3%(24-53) and FT: 88.9% in the 14 games he played so far. He is also a member of the Belgian senior national team.

Sam Van Rossom

   #4. Point guard Sam Van Rossom (188-86, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a CAI Zaragoza's victory against the 16th-ranked Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (4-12) 79-74 in the Spanish ACB on Saturday night. Van Rossom recorded 10 points. CAI Zaragoza (10-6) is placed fifth in the ACB. Van Rossom's overall stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.9apg and 1.2spg. He is also Belgian national team player.

   #5. U20 international point guard Retin Obasohan (185-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) managed to help The University of Alabama to win against the Oakland University (2-1) crushing them 65-45 in the NCAA last Saturday. He scored only 2 points. The The University of Alabama has conference record this season. Obasohan's overall stats this year are: 9.3ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.9apg and 1.2spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Belgian and Nigerian. Obasohan plays currently for the Belgian U20 national team.


The list of other players, who all have Belgian passport but never been selected to any of Belgian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Ryan Hoover (187-PG-74, agency: SportsTalent, college: Notre Dame, currently plays in Italy) was the major contributor in an overtime Fileni BPA Jesi's victory against the closely-ranked Pall.Trento (5-8) 106-105 in the Italian Lega2 (second division) in Sunday night's game. He recorded 32 points (!!!), 7 assists and 4 steals in 36 minutes. Fileni BPA Jesi (5-8) is placed 11th in the Lega2. Hoover has relatively good stats this year: 11.8ppg, 4.2rpg, 3.1apg and 2.1spg in the 13 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Strangely Hoover has never played in Belgium.

   #2. Tyler Haws (196-G, currently plays college basketball in the States) led BYU to an easy victory against the Loyola Marymount University (0-2) crushing them 92-51 in the NCAA on Thursday night. Haws scored 20 points and grabbed 9 rebounds (went 6 for 6 at the free throw line) in 31 minutes. The Brigham Young University has 2-0 conference record this season. Haws is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in BYU's roster. This season his overall stats are: 7.1ppg and 4.3rpg in the 11 games.

   #3. Ronrico White (190-PG-92, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Chattanooga (1-1) to beat the Georgia Tech (0-1). White scored 6 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 31 minutes. The Chattanooga (#35) was badly defeated 74-58 on the road by the Georgia Tech. This year White's overall stats are: 9.3ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.9apg and 1.2spg in the 16 games. He is a naturalized American. Strangely White has never played in Belgium.

Next season, it will be interesting to follow the performances and the hard work done by two Belgian coaches in the Luxembourg Total League. Pascal Meurs will return to Luxembourg where he will coach T71 Dudelange during the 2017-18 season. He will replace Philip Dejworek at the head of the team. Earlier this week, the betFIRST Liege Basket staff announced that young forward Louis Hazard (199-F-94, agency: Promotex) will stay in Liege next season. His contract at betFIRST Liege Basket has officially been prolonged. Hazard progressedd tremendously in his last two seasons at the Belgian top level. Yesterday, the Basic-Fit Brussels staff announced that the contract of Augustas Peciukevicius (192-G-91) has been extended for one more season.
