Ethias League Round 15: Okapi Aalstar beats Spirou Charleroi by three after a very close game - Feb 2, 2013

The most exciting game of round 15 in the Ethias League took place in Charleroi. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 4th placed Spirou Charleroi (7-6) to third ranked Okapi Aalstar (9-6) 100-97 on Friday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Spirou Charleroi. The guests trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 30-23 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Okapi Aalstar made 31-of-40 free shots (77.5 percent) during the game. 29 personal fouls committed by Spirou Charleroi helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for American guard Ryan Thompson (198-89, college: Rider) who led his team to a victory with 25 points and 7 assists. The former international forward Thomas Dreesen (199-88, agency: Court Side) contributed with 21 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American swingman Matt Walsh (197-82, college: Florida) answered with a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!), 17 rebounds and 6 assists for Spirou Charleroi. Okapi Aalstar moved-up to second place, which they share with M.Hainaut. Spirou Charleroi at the other side dropped to the fifth position with six games lost. Okapi Aalstar is looking forward to face Antwerp Giants (#4) at home in the next round. Spirou Charleroi will play against VOO Verviers-Pepinster and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked Belfius Mons-Hainaut (9-6) against fifth ranked Antwerp Giants (8-7) on Saturday night. Visiting Belfius Mons-Hainaut was defeated by Antwerp Giants in a tough game in Antwerp 49-56. American players dominated the game. It was a great evening for point guard Timothy Black (178-81, college: Barton, NC, agency: Limelight Hoops) who led his team to a victory scoring 9 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Jason Love helped adding 7 points and 9 rebounds. The best for the losing side was guard Quincy Taylor (196-82, college: UAB) with 13 points. Belfius Mons-Hainaut's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Antwerp Giants moved-up to fourth place. Belfius Mons-Hainaut at the other side keeps the second position with six games lost. They share it with Aalstar. Antwerp Giants will play against higher ranked Okapi Aalstar (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Belfius Mons-Hainaut will play against Leuven Bears and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Ethias League top team - Base Oostende (11-4) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed eighth ranked VOO Verviers-Pepinster (3-11) 99-71. It was a quality performance for Wesley Wilkinson who led the winners and scored 20 points and 7 rebounds (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Base Oostende's coach Dario Gjergja felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Nemanja Aleksandrov came up with 12 points and 8 rebounds for VOO Verviers-Pepinster in the defeat. Base Oostende have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 11-4 record. VOO Verviers-Pepinster lost third consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 11 games lost. Base Oostende will meet Liege Basket (#6) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. VOO Verviers-Pepinster will play against Spirou Charleroi and hope to secure a win.
The game in Leuven was also worth to mention about. 6th ranked Liege Basket (6-9) played at the court of seventh ranked Leuven Bears (5-9). Leuven Bears managed to secure a 8-point victory 84-76. The best player for the winners was Gerald Robinson who scored 27 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Leuven Bears maintains seventh place with 5-9 record. Liege Basket lost their third game in a row. They keep the sixth position with nine games lost. Leuven Bears' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Belfius Mons-Hainaut in Quaregnon and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.



Antwerp - M.Hainaut 56-49

Very important is a road loss of second ranked Belfius Mons-Hainaut (9-6) against fifth ranked Antwerp Giants (8-7) on Saturday night. Ethias League top team - Base Oostende (11-4) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed eighth ranked VOO Verviers-Pepinster (3-11) 99-71. The hosts trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 55-26 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Base Oostende made 27-of-30 free shots (90.0 percent) during the game. Base Oostende outrebounded VOO Verviers-Pepinster 36-24 including a 27-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a quality performance for American Wesley Wilkinson (207-84, college: Nebraska) who led the winners and scored 20 points and 7 rebounds (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Serbian-Montenegrin guard Dusan Djordjevic (195-83, agency: Beo Basket) accounted for 18 points for the winning side. Leuven - Liege 84-76

The game in Leuven was also worth to mention about. 6th ranked Liege Basket (6-9) played at the court of seventh ranked Leuven Bears (5-9). Leuven Bears managed to secure a 8-point victory 84-76. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 33-24. But Liege Basket won third quarter 18-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The best player for the winners was American point guard Gerald Robinson (185-89, college: Georgia) who scored 27 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Naturalized American forward Ian Hanavan (202-80, college: Evansville, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was international forward Wen Boss Mukubu (198-83, college: UAB, agency: SportsTalent) who recorded 17 points and international point guard Geoffrey Hockins (188-88) added 10 points and 5 rebounds respectively.
