Professionalism
Money isn't the most important aspect of being a professional basketball player. For some, its all about the money and for others its about pride, respect and money. I dont just play basketball for money because if I did I would become content. Contentment is the beginning of the end for me. Nothing makes me work harder than the thought of failure. Professionalism Money isn't the most important aspect of being a professional basketball player. For some, its all about the money and for others its about pride, respect and money. I dont just play basketball for money because if I did I would become content. Contentment is the beginning of the end for me. Nothing makes me work harder than the thought of failure. Its all about being a professional over here. My name is my marketing device. Of course my play is very important, but if your name is related to negative baggage then chances are you wont be able to show your play anywhere. Antwerp Giants is very professional because they do things on time and I never have to worry about whether or not my money is there or if its on time. That can be hard to find in Europe. Some places play with your money, which I dont like. You want me to play at a high level for you and be on time to practice and games right? If so, then they should use those same principles when it comes to payments and their responsibilities. If any of you are trying to come overseas or are new in the business always research your clubs and make sure their professional history is acceptable for you.
Fight Night
I like Antwerp Giants. As a matter of fact, I like Belgium. Belgium seems really international to me. Most people here speak very good English. It makes it more comfortable to move round the city and do the normal day-to-day activities that we all take for granted. Of course French and Dutch are the 2 national languages but English is in a not so distant 3rd. One of the reasons I like Antwerp Giants so much is because of the off the court opportunities I have. I had the chance to go to my 1st ever boxing match in our own Lotto Arena. The match was between Sugar Jackson (Belgian) and Randall Bailey (American). Let me set the scene a little bit. Sugar Jackson is pretty much one of the best fighters from Europe. I believe this was his first time fighting an American so it was going to be a good test for him if he wanted to go for a world title. Randall Bailey is a very good fighter who is known for his power. Our seats are right behind the judges at ringside. The stage is set and we are ready for 12 rounds of solid boxing. Sugar gets introduced first and the all-Belgian crowd is unanimously chanting and singing their national anthem. The place is buzzing! Im getting amped because Bailey is about to come out and represent the United States. I was kind of torn between the fighters because I often see Jackson working out in the same gym as I do and we always joke a little. I was also for Bailey because he represents my country and at the end of the day thats home, ya dig? That being said, Bailey gets introduced and the disrespectful chants ring out. What am I supposed to do now? I want to clap my hands and sing my own national anthem but I might get bottles or even food thrown on me. I decided to chill and lay low. Meanwhile, one of my teammates cant hold back and decides to make some noise for Bailey. If a look could kill, the guys look sitting next to him would have put him six feet deep. The lights fade and the bell sounds for round 1 to begin. A jab here and a jab there by both opponents show that they are both still feeling each other out. A flurry by Jackson opens him up for a counter flurry by Bailey. Then all of a sudden it sounded like a gun went off. The Knockout King has done it again. One minute and six seconds into the match Bailey puts Jackson on his back. Everybody is stunned but chants for Sugar to get up. He gets up and then it seemed like I was at a Tyson fight because the fight was over. They dont call Bailey the Knockout King for nothing. He defended his nickname that night. I still have major respect for Sugar though. He did what he could. In no way, shape, or form am I trashing Sugar Jackson as a fighter. It just wasnt his night and everybody in sports gets caught slippin sooner or later. Antwerp Giants vs. Oostende Huge game! We were in the 5th spot and Oostende was in the 4th spot. Its getting close to playoff time and everybody is trying to jockey for the best playoff position. We have a really good chance to make some strides and move up the ladder if we stay focused and take care of our business. We took care of business against Oostende. It was of course a regular season game but it had a playoff atmosphere. The game was live on television and our arena had a good crowd. This was my first game back from injury so I was anxious to get out there and make a difference. The game was physical and fast. Everybody was ready to claim victory. My boy Brandon Gay (203-F-82, agency: Edge Sports, college: San Diego) stepped up and had a big game for us yesterday. He was clutch, as he has always proven. Another player who made an extremely clutch play was Roel Moors (188-G-78, agency: Agency No 10). He blocked a 3pt shot at the end to seal the game. Shout out to those two. The physicality of the game might have caught the refs off guard because they had some interesting comments. For instance, the game was getting rough and a ref told my teammate and another player to cool down. I then told the ref, come on, you know what this game is all about. Things are going to get heated. He then proceeds to yell and say to me, you dont know shit! I was shocked so I asked him what he said and he repeated it with even more intensity, you dont know shit! That incident let me know that there is some sort of war between refs and players in Belgium. Whatever it is, they cant deny whats mine in the end. We fought hard and ended up taking the win 90-85. This only helps our push for playoff position.
Something to think about: As professional athletes we have the freedom that most people suffer for. Dont take it for granted!

A month and a half left in the regular season and its going to be a dogfight. We are currently fighting for a playoff spot, which I have a good feeling we will get. Right now I can only watch from the sideline because of an injury that needs time to heal. This has been the longest 2- weeks of my career. There is a light at the end of this tunnel and I am surely approaching it. Hopefully the next doctors appointment goes well and I can suit back up for the very important game against Mons on April 6th. This is my 7th season in Europe and honestly, it feels like one of my first few years here. Living abroad is fun and has its positives, but it can be really tough for some people to handle. No matter how long a person I have been over here there is nothing like the feel of home. Ive made it through the preseasons and the very long regular seasons, but the real task is living in a totally different country. I have been blessed to be in situations where the people associated with my clubs make my European transition very easy. Ive had many opportunities to do things off the court that makes my time here more enjoyable. One thing that really passes the time during these seasons is video games. The hottest video game on the market right now is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Its like crack. Most of my teammates have Playstation 3s and in between practices its warfare. I have to be honest and say that I dont play as much as most of them because my first few times on the game I played like less than an amateur if that is possible. I think Modern Warfare is on its way to becoming the most popular video game of the Belgian Basketball League. Final Four weekend is upon us and as usual I participated in a March Madness bracket. I lost my money in the 2nd round, which officially brings my record to 0-forever in trying to win this thing. I think everybodys bracket was destroyed when most of the favorites lost. This time of the year is also very good for the American spirit over here. It gives us something to relate to back home and make us feel connected again. Big events like March Madness, Super Bowl, and college bowl games keep us looking forward to different parts of the season. We signed a new player a week or so ago and his name is Trent Strickland (196-G-84, college: Wake Forest). Dude is hilarious. I think we are going to get along fine. I enjoy having fun and cracking jokes and he will fit right in. We have a team that has fun on and off the court so it is important to make sure new players can bring that as well. This is my first blog and hopefully I can get the hang of writing a lot of what goes on in my life..lol. Im sure it will get better as the weeks progress closer and closer to the playoffs.
Tip of the day: Dont let somebody else do what you could have done yourself. Dare to be great!
