The Regular Season in Top Division I is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 4 rounds. The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

The most exciting game of round 23 in the Top Division I took place in Gent. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of second-ranked Waregem (15-7) to first ranked Gent Hawks (18-4) 62-61 on Saturday evening. The hosts trailed by 4 points after three quarters before their 15-10 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Gent Hawks outrebounded Waregem 42-24 including 16 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was forward Joeri Vermoessen (200-93) who had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. Power forward Joren Vermoessen (201-93) chipped in 10 points and 7 rebounds. Center Bart-Willy Samaey (199-87) produced 14 points and 8 rebounds for the guests. Gent Hawks maintains first place with 18-4 record. Waregem lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the fourth position with seven games lost. Gent Hawks are looking forward to face Ieper (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Waregem will play against Ekeren (#13) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that they can break losing series.
Important game to mention about took place in Antwerpen. Second ranked Oxaco (16-6) saved a 1-point victory on the road edging 6th ranked Soba (12-10) 88-87 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Soba. Guard Nick Celis (196-88) saved the victory by scoring 28 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Sam Van-Hoey contributed with 23 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Swingman Mitchel Gorremans (191-85) answered with 23 points and 5 rebounds for Soba. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Oxaco maintains second place with 16-6 record having just two points less than leader Gent Hawks, which they share with Gembo BBC. Soba at the other side keeps the sixth position with ten games lost. Oxaco will play against Houthalen (#5) at home in the next round. Soba will play against Royal Brussels and hopes to get back on the winning track.

It was a great evening for Bart Maesen who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Patrick Hilliman responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds. Houthalen have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 14-9 record. Loser Melsele keeps the eighth position with 13 games lost. They share it with Royal Brussels. Houthalen will meet league's second-placed Oxaco in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Melsele will play against Gistel Oostende (#12) and hope to secure a win.
Bottom-ranked Ekeren managed to get a sixth victory. This time newly promoted Ekeren edged seventh-ranked Giants B 73-71. It was an exceptional evening for Dave Van-den-Brande who led the winners and scored 17 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Ekeren (6-15) moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with RPC Anderlecht. Giants B at the other side keeps the seventh position with 13 games lost. Ekeren's next round opponent will be higher ranked Waregem (#4) in Waregem and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
Leader Gent Hawks delivered the eighteenth victory on Saturday night. This time they crushed 12th ranked RPC Anderlecht (6-15) 97-66. The best player for the winners was Joeri Vermoessen who scored 23 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Gent Hawks maintains first place with 18-4 record. Newly promoted RPC Anderlecht dropped to the bottom position with 15 games lost. Gent Hawks will face Ieper (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. RPC Anderlecht will play against Ninane and hope to win that game.

Other games of round 23 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Ieper was defeated by Gembo BBC in Borgerhout 84-67. Gistel Oostende beat Ninane at home 87-73. Giants B won against Royal Brussels on the opponent's court 72-70. Houthalen outscored Ieper in a home game 99-76.
The best stats of 23th round was 21 points by Darnell Snyers of Houthalen.

Houthalen - Melsele 58-57

Eighth-ranked Melsele (9-13) made lots of trouble for fifth ranked Houthalen (14-9) on Sunday. Houthalen managed to secure only one-point victory 58-57. However their fans expected easier game. Houthalen held Melsele to an opponent 21.3 percent shooting from the field compared to 43.7 percent accuracy of the winners. Houthalen had a 33-20 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great evening for forward Bart Maesen (198-89) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Point guard Chiel Koonings (180-90) helped adding 11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Dutch power forward Patrick Hilliman (206-82, college: High Point) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds and naturalized DR Congolese forward Armand Kabeya (198-88, agency: Promotex) scored 13 points and 5 rebounds. Houthalen have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 14-9 record. Loser Melsele keeps the eighth position with 13 games lost. They share it with Royal Brussels. Houthalen will meet league's second-placed Oxaco in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Melsele will play against Gistel Oostende (#12) and hope to secure a win.

There was no surprise in Borgerhout where 11th ranked Ieper (8-15) was defeated by third ranked Gembo BBC (16-6) 84-67 on Sunday. Gembo BBC dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Ieper's 36. Gembo BBC forced 21 Ieper turnovers and outrebounded them 37-26 including 27 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Ieper's players. The best player for the winners was Jens Bouckaert (-91) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Forward Eli Van-Aken (193-85) chipped in 18 points and 5 rebounds. Four Gembo BBC players scored in double figures. Center Gilles Dierickx (213-92, college: Seattle Pacific) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds and swingman Robin Mestdagh (195-88, college: E.Kentucky) added 16 points respectively for the guests. Gembo BBC moved-up to second place, which they share with Oxaco. Ieper lost third consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with 15 games lost. Gembo BBC will face Giants B (#7) in Antwerp in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Ieper will play at home against the league's leader Gent Hawks (#1) and hope to win that game.

The best player for the winners was power forward Tim Lambrecht (206-98, agency: Court Side) who had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Sam Hemeleers (180-95) chipped in 13 points and 7 assists. Five Gistel Oostende players scored in double figures. The former international power forward Francois Lhoest (196-85) produced a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!) and 11 rebounds and guard Sebastien Maio (190-78) added 17 points respectively for the guests. Houthalen - Ieper 99-76

Very predictable result when fifth ranked Houthalen (14-9) outscored at home 11th ranked Ieper (8-15) 99-76 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 3-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 99-76. Houthalen dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Ieper's 38. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Ieper's players. The best player for the winners was point guard Chiel Koonings (180-90) who scored 18 points and 6 assists. Guard Darnell Snyers (181-98) chipped in 21 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Five Houthalen players scored in double figures. Houthalen's coach Ronnie McCollum felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Swingman Alexander Schepens (191-93) produced 22 points and 7 rebounds and center Gilles Dierickx (213-92, college: Seattle Pacific) added 16 points and 7 rebounds respectively for the guests. Houthalen have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 14-9 record. Ieper lost third consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with 15 games lost. Houthalen will face league's second-placed Oxaco in Boechout in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ieper will play at home against the league's leader Gent Hawks (#1) and hope to win that game.
