Tom Poppe
On behalf of eurobasket.com, I have recently tried to get in touch with Giovanni Mureddu and Tom Poppe to know why the men's team of the historic Belgian club CEP Fleurus is currently struggling to avoid relegation in regional division. CEP Fleurus played in FIBA Korac Cup in the 1980s and was a major club in Belgium's first national division in the 1970s and 80s. More recently, the team won the 2008 Division II title. Four years later, the CEPmen (already coached by Tom Poppe ) reached the 2012 Division II play-off semi-finals. Today, the team is ranked 12th in Top Division Men 2A and keeps fighting not to be relegated again. Despite already being in jeopardy in Top Division Men 2A, CEP Fleurus also defeated Top Division Men 1 team Royal IV Brussels 74-56 in the AWBB Cup semi-final a few weeks ago. The AWBB Cup is the cup competition organized by the Wallonia-Brussels Basketball Association. In the next stage, the CEPmen will play Top Division Men 2A team Belfius Mons Hainaut B in the AWBB Cup Final scheduled for Sunday, Mar. 12th, 2017 in Libramont, Belgium (next weekend!).

We have received no feedback from CEP President Giovanni Mureddu who wants time for himself (for private reasons). On the other hand, we have had the chance to get an interview with Tom Poppe. Tom Poppe, the current Head Coach of CEP Fleurus in Top Division Men 2A, is preparing the AWBB Cup Final and is currently putting much energy to save the team from relegation.

Tom Poppe has gained experience in coaching several excellent Belgian men's teams for a few seasons: BBC De Pinte (in 2004-05), BBC Zwevezele (from 2005 to 2010), Pitzemburg Mechelen (in 2010-11), Kangoeroes Willebroek (from 2012 to 2013), Condors Sint-Niklaas (in 2014-15), Royal IV Brussels (in 2015-16) and CEP Fleurus (in 2011-12, in 2014 and in 2016-17). He managed to bring his team BBC Zwevezele from Division IV to Division II and even won the Division II title with BBC Zwevezele in 2009-10. He also won the Top Division Men 2 title with Royal IV Brussels last season. To be mentioned: he was at the head of Kangoeroes Willebroek when the club reached Belgium's Pro League in 2012-13.

Here is what Coach Tom Poppe has to say:

Eurobasket.com - Bert Larsimont (EB): Can you tell us how the passion for basketball started and what are you first memories about the game?
Tom Poppe (TP): When I was a young boy (age 6), I often went with my dad (Coach Paul Poppe) to watch games... It was in the first national division with, among others, Ijsboerke Kortrijk, etc. He also competed in a quarter-final of the European Cup and was even named Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1978! As you can see, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. After my active career as a player, I wanted to coach during one year just to see how I could manage... And now I've been busy with it for 12 years!

EB: What is missing in the current CEP Fleurus men's team to enhance competitiveness in Top Division Men 2A?
TP: We have not enough core players (that's to say players who have played at this level or at a higher one). Today, we have only Moussa Ouattara (202-C/F-88), Alex Tuluka (193-G/F-89, college: Missouri Western) and Thomas Mertens (190-F-93)! Then we have good prospects like Max Mureddu (175-PG-95), Jeremy Steinier (G-95), Modou Pape Mbaye (201-F-94) and Nicolas Bertouille (192-PF-93). And then, there are even younger players like Guillaume Piret (F), Mathieu Bofaya (F), Luca Eeklaer, etc. Following the departures of Senna Hounhanou ("Secret Story", a TV reality show) and Ricardo Cardoso (injury), the team has not enough depth and experienced players must play too much and too long without resting. You cannot ask all other players (young and even younger) to cope with the pressure of the competition, they are and remain additional players!

EB: How do you see the end of the season? How did you feel after the sharp drop in the rankings during the second part of the season (from a personal point of view and among the team)?
TP: After we knew that the team lacked forces, I had already presumed that it would be very difficult... Mentally speaking, it is very difficult for the group, and the best is that we are not out of the race so far! Quite the contrary... We always lose because of a lack of rotations... We have forced a miracle all by ourselves in qualifying for the AWBB Cup Final. This is indeed a chance to end in a nice way!

EB: Do you have any remarks, complaints or encouragement to give to the CEP staff or to some of the players? If yes, which one (s)?
TP: I've absolutely no comment to give on the situation... That's the way it is and it's far from being fun but I had previously experienced two wonderful moments with a team and a President and staff who were 100% behind the club! Now it's different for various reasons. The President whom I consider as a friend is in a tight corner for private reasons and therefore can/wants to have more time for himself. That's his right to do so but it's nevertheless a pity that CEP Fleurus (the men's team) should end this way. Giovanni Mureddu and the staff have done very much in a successful way for the club and now it must be extremely hard for everyone to end this way.

EB: What slogan or speech will you give to boost your guys in the locker rooms before the last games of the season?
TP: Just like before each competition game as well as before the [next] AWBB Cup Final, I've kept saying that I cannot blame the players for anything as far as input is concerned and we still go again 100% for the win but with TOO few good players, you cannot compete to get good results...It would therefore be fantastic to win the AWBB Cup Final!

EB: We have recently learned that you will coach a Belgian Top Division Women's team (Upkot Sparta Laarne) in 2017-18. How do you see the end of the season with CEP Fleurus and what lessons have you learned this season that could help you in the future?
TP: It is undoubtedly my most difficult season. Every week you know that it is going to be like a David and Goliath type of game... I remember the first two experiences with CEP Fleurus (one when reaching the play-off semi-finals in Division II and another one with a beautiful AWBB Cup victory). But it is clear that this season leaves a bitter taste. CEP Fleurus has already been in a downward spiral for the last two years and it is a pity that it is not getting out of it!

Top Division I Round 3: Soba hands first loss to Spirou B - 2 days ago
This is still too early stage of the Regular Season in Top Division I and we should expect many changes in upcoming rounds. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with loss of the undefeated team and favorites losing the games. The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Spirou B (2-1) at the home court on Sunday night. Hosts were defeated by Soba (3-0) 89-83. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial qua...   [read more]
