KK SPARS bringing the glory of basketball back to Sarajevo and back to Bosnia!
KK BOSNA brought glory to Bosnia and Sarajevo in the 1970s and 80s with their amazing play culminating in winning what are todays Euroleague. Hard times fell on the team and the country in the 1990s and basketball like everything else in the country suffered as a result. KK BOSNA made a mini resurgence in the mid-2000s but it was done through irresponsible management and spending, resulting in the team being sanctioned by FIBA and not being allowed to sign international players until they settle their past debts.
The team is still floundering and a major issue with them is talent evaluation and development. The team has passed on top European prospect Cedi Osman and domestic talents never gave a chance to Bosnian phenom Armin Hot who is tearing up the Bosnian domestic league this season looking like a Bosnian Dwayne Wade in his prime.
Sarajevans have a burning passion for all things basketball supporting KK BOSNA until the team failed to meet expectations. The fans interests were peaked a few years later by the upstart Triland Development team who won D2 a couple of years ago only to decline a promotion and instead step back to D3 instead. One again Sarajevan basketball fans were disappointed again.
Now comes the spectacular rise of KK SPARS who have built an amazing organization in only a few years that competes with the top young clubs in Europe. Much credit should be given to the leadership of the club who have organized a terrific organization.
KK SPARS made their international debut last year at the NIJT tournament and played like a team new to the international scene. Domestically they competed well getting to the finals of D2 before losing to the more experienced KK KAKANJ team who were then promoted to D1.
KK SPARS came back this season and stormed through the NIJT tournament in Rome going 4-0 and thrashing Fenerbache in the final by 18 points! They have climbed to first place in D2 in Bosnia recently beating their nearest rivals OKK Sloboda Tulza after being down by 10 with two minutes to go!
KK SPARS have amassed an amazing level of talent for such a new club and has handled them all well. They feature some of the top prospects in Europe in Doko Salic, Nedim Buza, Adin Vrabac, Aleksej Nikolic as well as young and up and coming players like Alija Piric and a few other very young talents in their lower division teams
Who knows KK SPARS train ends up but the journey so far has been nothing short of spectacular, still a chance to climb on board basketball fans before its too late!
