Lukoil searching for some rhythm in first friendlies - Sep 11, 2012

Lukoil Academik Sofia played two friendly games against Aris Thessaloniki in the last week, scoring a win and a loss vs the Greeks. Bulgarian champion is still not in full strength, awaiting its last addition PG Tomas Massamba. The two games though were meant to be the start of a newly built team, preparing for the Euroleague QR.
First one was a low-scoring affair, finishing 58:52, but Lukoil was doubtful only in the second quarter. The second game, played in away arena in Sofia, ended 71:73, with Aris Thessaloniki capturing the lead at the end of the third quarter, and strong finish by its big man.
Greeks obviously were a good shooting team, especially from distance, nailing lots of shots from behind the arc. Lukoil is definitely still looking for that scoring touch, which will surely come, with the team having Eurocup legend scorer Todor Stoykov (198-G/F-77, agency: Interperformances) still captaining the team, and the likes of the new additions Devin Green (201-G/F-82, college: Hampton) and Mohammed Abukar (208-F-85, agency: Two Points, college: San Diego St.).
Abukar's positioning seems to wander between both forward positions, with him showing quite shooting skills in the second game against Aris Thessaloniki. He would need more rebounding action and post-up plays, if he is the one to cover the power forward. Center Darryl Watkins (211-C-84, college: Syracuse) is a massive change from the foreigner Lukoil had last season on that spot Bruno Sundov. Reliable and strong under the basket, he still could bring more to the offensive end for the team. Green, who has already been in the team some time ago, looks sharp from the start, came in in shape, as expected, and just got to adjust again to Bulgarian environment, to be probably the leading scorer for Lukoil in the upcoming season.
Returning PG Brandon Heath will be the starter on that position, with Bozhidar Avramov and Massamba switching as his replacement, or shooting guards at times. The other Bulgarians on the roster: Tencho Banev showed his skilled game against Aris Thessaloniki, Veselin Vesselinov could be entering for more minutes as power forward this season, and Pavel Marinov and Nikolay Kolev will cover the rest in the frontcourt.
Lukoil will rely mainly on 11-player roster for the season: Stoykov, Heath, Abukar, Green, Watkins, Banev, Avramov, Vesselinov, Marinov, Kolev and Massamba. Three juniors would fill the registered list for the club tournaments.
The next challenge for Lukoil is now Barcelona, with Bulgarian and Spanish champions clashing on September 14th in Sofia.

Semple's double-double lands him Player of the Week award - 3 days ago
24-year old forward Jordan Semple (201-F-92) had a great game in the last round for Akademik PL and receives a Player of the Week award for round 14. He had a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds, while his team outclassed Levski (#9, 2-11) with 33-point margin 91-58. Akademik PL maintains the 3rd position in Bulgarian league. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Akademik PL will need more victories to improve their 8-4...   [read more]
Division A Round 14: Cherno More 2 defeats Dolphin in the game between Top 4 teams - 4 days ago
An interesting game for Cherno More 2 (8-4) which played road game in Dolphin against one of their biggest challengers Dolphin (6-6). Third ranked Cherno More 2 had an easy win 121-97. The game was mostly controlled by Cherno More 2. Dolphin managed to win third quarter 34-26. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Cherno More 2 won last quarter 36-14. Newly promoted Cherno More 2 maintains third position in A wit...   [read more]
