Round 3 in NBL means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Botevgrad where host Balkan (2-2) beat league's leader Euroins Cherno More (2-1) 82-73 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Euroins Cherno More. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 8-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 82-73. The best player for the winners was international Ivan Lilov (196-88) who scored 23 points and 6 rebounds. Serbian forward Uros Petrovic (205-90, agency: Beo Basket) chipped in 20 points and 7 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international point guard Asen Velikov (185-86) who recorded 17 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Balkan moved-up to sixth place. Euroins Cherno More at the other side dropped to the second position with one game lost. They share it with 3 other teams. They were replaced at the leadership position by Lukoil Academik. Euroins Cherno More will play next round against league's leader Lukoil Academik trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Balkan will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Tundja Yambol on the road.
The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Lukoil Academik as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Lukoil Academik smashed second-best Levski Sofia at home 91-64. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Levski Sofia. It was a key game for the top position in the league. It was a good game for American forward Mohammed Abukar (208-85, college: San Diego St., agency: Two Points) who led his team to a victory with 21 points and 6 rebounds (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Darryl Watkins contributed with 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. International Pavel Ivanov (200-88) answered with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for Levski Sofia. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Lukoil Academik have a solid series of three victories in a row. As mentioned above they took over a top position. Levski Sofia at the other side keeps the second place with one game lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. Levski Sofia will play next round against Spartak Pleven trying to get back on the winning streak. Lukoil Academik will try to continue on its current victory against second ranked Euroins Cherno More at Varna.
A very close game took place in Stara Zagora (derby !!!) between Tundja Yambol and Beroe. Sixth ranked Tundja Yambol (2-1) got a very close victory on the road over bottom-ranked Beroe (0-2). Tundja Yambol managed to escape with a 2-point win 72-70 on Saturday evening. It was a great evening for Brian Ormon who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Reginald Holmes with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Tundja Yambol moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Newly promoted Beroe still closes the standings with two games lost. Tundja Yambol will meet at home Balkan (#6) in the next round. Beroe will play against Chernomorets in Burgas and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Chernomorets moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Newly promoted U20 still closes the standings with three games lost. Chernomorets' next round opponent will be Beroe (#9) in Stara Zagora and are hoping to win another game. U20 will play at home against Rilski Sportist in Samokov and looks forward to get finally their first victory.

In the last game of round 3 Rilski Sportist defeated Spartak Pleven in Samokov 84-80.


Spartak Pleven - Rilski Sportist 80-84

There was a minor upset when higher ranked Spartak Pleven (1-2) was defeated at home by ninth ranked Rilski Sportist (1-2) 84-80. Spartak Pleven was ahead by 5 points at the halftime before a 43-34 second half run of Rilski Sportist. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Spartak Pleven's 34. Rilski Sportist forced 20 Spartak Pleven turnovers. It was an exceptional evening for American point guard Terry Smith (185-86, college: Mercyhurst) who led the winners and scored 22 points. His fellow American import forward Braxton Dupree (203-89, college: Towson, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) accounted for 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks for the winning side. Guard Aleksandar Dyakovski (185-82, agency: Global Sports Plaza) came up with 15 points and 8 assists and forward Simeon Tsenov (196-82) added 14 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Spartak Pleven in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Rilski Sportist left bottom position moving up to seventh place, which they share with defeated Spartak Pleven. Rilski Sportist's next round opponent will be bottom-ranked U20 (#10) in Sofia.

Chernomorets - U20 87-51

The game with biggest result difference took place in Burgas. Local Chernomorets (2-1) outscored bottom-ranked U20 (0-3) 87-51. The game without a history. Chernomorets led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Chernomorets shot 18 for 33 from the free-throw line, while U20 only scored two points from the stripe. They outrebounded U20 55-30 including a 35-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. Chernomorets brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. 26 personal fouls committed by U20 helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a quality performance for forward Ivo Slavchev (198-90) who led the winners and scored 16 points and 9 rebounds. American center James Tyler (218-88) accounted for 10 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks for the winning side. Tyler is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Chernomorets players scored in double figures. Naturalized Cypriot point guard Angel Natskin (182-93) came up with 9 points and center Velislav Galabov (205-94) added 8 points and 6 rebounds respectively for U20 in the defeat. A very close game took place in Stara Zagora (derby !!!) between Tundja Yambol and Beroe. Sixth ranked Tundja Yambol (2-1) got a very close victory on the road over bottom-ranked Beroe (0-2). Tundja Yambol managed to escape with a 2-point win 72-70 on Saturday evening. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Beroe won third quarter 23-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Tundja Yambol forced 19 Beroe turnovers. It was a great evening for American forward Brian Ormon (201-84, college: Mountain St.) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds. International Martin Durchev (204-87) helped adding 20 points and 4 assists. The best for the losing side was American guard Reginald Holmes (193-87, college: Morgan St.) with 21 points and 7 rebounds and the other American import power forward Michael Hart (206-85, college: N.Illinois, agency: Top Notch Sports) scored 16 points and 8 rebounds (perfect from the field making all six shots).
