NBL Round 4: Tundja Yambol beats Balkan by one after a very close game - Nov 10, 2012

The most exciting game of round 4 in the NBL took place in Yambol. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 6th ranked Balkan (2-3) to fifth ranked Tundja Yambol (3-1) 86-85 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Balkan. Worth to mention a great performance of international Martin Durchev (204-87) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and 6 rebounds. Guard Stanislav Govedarov (185-80) contributed with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. International Ivan Lilov (196-88) replied with 25 points and 7 rebounds for Balkan. Tundja Yambol moved-up to second place, which they share with Levski Sofia. Balkan at the other side dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. Tundja Yambol is looking forward to face league's leader Lukoil Academik in Sofia in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Balkan will play at home against Chernomorets (#6) in Burgas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Chernomorets (2-2) against ninth ranked Beroe (1-2) on Saturday night. Host Chernomorets was edged by Beroe in a tough game in Burgas 67-70. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Chernomorets. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Reginald Holmes (193-87, college: Morgan St.) who helped to win the game recording 21 points and 8 rebounds and Will Walker who added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists during the contest. Beroe's coach Georgi Mladenov allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. At the losing side American center James Tyler (218-88) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks. Beroe left bottom position moving up to eighth place. Chernomorets at the other side dropped to the fourth position with two games lost. They share it with Cherno More and Rilski Sportist. Beroe will play against bottom-ranked U20 (#10) in Sofia in the next round. Chernomorets will play on the road against Balkan (#7) in Botevgrad and hopes to get back on the winning track.
An interesting game for Lukoil Academik (4-0) which played road game in Varna against their biggest opponent Euroins Cherno More (2-2). Top-ranked Lukoil Academik had an easy win 105-71. The winners were led by Brandon Heath who scored that evening 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Even 15 points by Milcho Borisov did not help to save the game for Euroins Cherno More. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Lukoil Academik have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 4-0 record. Loser Euroins Cherno More dropped to the fourth place with two games lost. They share the position with Chernomorets and Rilski Sportist. Lukoil Academik will meet at home Tundja Yambol (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Euroins Cherno More will play against Spartak Pleven and hope to secure a win.
Bottom-ranked U20 is still unable to win any game. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their fourth consecutive match to seventh ranked Rilski Sportist (2-2) 87-74. Branko Mirkovic fired 18 points and 5 assists for the winners. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Rilski Sportist moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Cherno More and Chernomorets. Newly promoted U20 still closes the standings with four games lost. Rilski Sportist's next round opponent will be league's second-placed Levski Sofia at home and it may be the game of the week. U20 will play against Beroe (#8) in Stara Zagora and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Levski Sofia's coach Konstantin Papazov felt very confident that he used 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Levski Sofia moved-up to second place, which they share with Tundja Yambol. Loser Spartak Pleven dropped to the ninth position with three games lost. Levski Sofia will face Rilski Sportist (#5) in Samokov in the next round. Spartak Pleven will play at home against Euroins Cherno More (#4) in Varna.



Chernomorets - Beroe 67-70

Very important is a home loss of third ranked Chernomorets (2-2) against ninth ranked Beroe (1-2) on Saturday night. Host Chernomorets was edged by Beroe in a tough game in Burgas 67-70. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Chernomorets. The guests were ahead by 12 points but lost the second period ending it with a 5-point deficit before their 19-11 run, which allowed them to win the game. Beroe dominated down low during the game scoring 44 of its points in the paint compared to Chernomorets' 22. They outrebounded Chernomorets 53-38 including a 21-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. Chernomorets was plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Reginald Holmes (193-87, college: Morgan St.) who helped to win the game recording 21 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import guard Will Walker (183, college: De Paul) who added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists during the contest. U20 - Rilski Sportist 74-87

Bottom-ranked U20 is still unable to win any game. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their fourth consecutive match to seventh ranked Rilski Sportist (2-2) 87-74. The game was mostly controlled by Rilski Sportist. U20 was better in fourth quarter 24-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Rilski Sportist forced 22 U20 turnovers and outrebounded them 37-25 including 23 on the defensive glass. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Rilski Sportist brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. 28 personal fouls committed by U20 helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Serbian guard Branko Mirkovic (190-82, agency: Global Sports Plaza) fired 18 points and 5 assists for the winners. International Hristo Zahariev (197-90) chipped in 13 points and 4 assists. Five Rilski Sportist players scored in double figures. Forward Aleks Simeonov (200-93) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds and naturalized Danish forward Tencho Tenchev (202-93, agency: Interperformances) added 21 points and 4 assists respectively for lost side. The game between fourth ranked Levski Sofia (3-1) and 8th ranked Spartak Pleven (1-3) in Sofia on Saturday ended with biggest points difference. Levski Sofia outscored guests from Pleven 98-52. The game without a history. Levski Sofia led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 78 of its points in the paint compared to Spartak Pleven's 26. Levski Sofia forced 20 Spartak Pleven turnovers and outrebounded them 43-27 including a 33-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Levski Sofia looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Spartak Pleven's players. It was a very good performance for the former international center Nikolay Varbanov (210-85, agency: Interperformances) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-12 shooting from the field). Serbian point guard Marko Marinovic (183-83) contributed with 16 points and 6 assists for the winners. Four Levski Sofia players scored in double figures. Bulgaria has its third SIGAL UNIQA Balkan League champion. After Rilski sportist in 2009, and Levski in 2010 and 2014,Beroe is now the third Bulgarian team to ever win the competitions trophy. 24-year old forward Travis Daniels (202-F-92) had an amazing evening in the last round for Balkan and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 26. He had a double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds, while his team crushed Spartak Pleven (#6, 10-13) with 24-point margin 95-71. Balkan maintains the 5th position in Bulgarian league.
