NBL Round 5: Chernomorets defeat Balkan in the closest game of the week - Nov 17, 2012

The most exciting game of round 5 in the NBL took place in Botevgrad. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 7th ranked Balkan (2-4) to sixth ranked Chernomorets (3-2) 84-82 on Saturday evening. The guests trailed by 4 points after three quarters before their 27-21 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Chernomorets made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. American center James Tyler (218-88) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 20 rebounds for the winners and forward Konstantin Koev (195-91) chipped in 10 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. International Ivan Lilov (196-88) responded with 18 points and 6 assists. Balkan's coach Petar Klechkov rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Chernomorets moved-up to second place, which they share with 4 other teams. Balkan at the other side dropped to the eighth position with four games lost. Chernomorets is looking forward to face league's leader Lukoil Academik in Sofia in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Balkan will play on the road against Beroe (#7) in Stara Zagora and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Serbian point guard Marko Marinovic (183-83) came up with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists for Levski Sofia in the defeat. Levski Sofia's coach Konstantin Papazov tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Rilski Sportist have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Levski Sofia. Rilski Sportist will play against league's second-placed Euroins Cherno More in Varna in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Levski Sofia's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Sofia to the arena U20.

Undefeated Lukoil Academik have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 5-0 record. Loser Tundja Yambol dropped to the second position with two games lost. They share it with 4 other teams. Lukoil Academik will meet Chernomorets (#4) in the next round. Tundja Yambol will play against Spartak Pleven and hope to secure a win.
Bottom-ranked U20 (0-5) is still winless. This time they lost on the road their fifth consecutive match to eighth ranked Beroe (2-2) 102-55. Will Walker orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 12 assists and 4 steals (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Beroe moved-up to seventh place. U20 lost their fifth game in a row. U20 at the other side, also newcomer in the league, still closes the standings with five games lost. Beroe's next round opponent will be Balkan (#8) in Botevgrad. U20's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Sofia Levski Sofia.

In the last game of round 5 Cherno More won against Spartak Pleven on the opponent's court 98-81.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 23 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists and 4 steals by Asen Velikov of Cherno More.

Very expected game when 9th ranked Spartak Pleven (1-4) was defeated at home by fourth ranked Euroins Cherno More (3-2) 98-81. It looked good early as Spartak Pleven took an 9-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Euroins Cherno More took control and eventually winning the game that evening by 17 points. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Spartak Pleven's 36. Euroins Cherno More forced 22 Spartak Pleven turnovers. It was a great shooting night for Euroins Cherno More especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 62.5 percentage. The former international point guard Asen Velikov (185-86) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists and 4 steals. Greek center Giorgos Galiotos (213-86, agency: Interperformances) contributed with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds for the winners.
