NBL Round 11: Rilski Sportist loses to Lukoil Academik in the game between Top 4 teams - Jan 6, 2013

The game between Top Four teams took place in Sofia. First ranked host Lukoil Academik (10-1) defeated 3rd placed Rilski Sportist (7-4) 96-84. The game was mostly controlled by Lukoil Academik. Rilski Sportist managed to win second period 26-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Lukoil Academik looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a great evening for American swingman Devin Green (201-82, college: Hampton) who led his team to a victory scoring 27 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (on 11-of-12 shooting from the field). His fellow American import guard Brandon Heath (193-84, college: San Diego St.) helped adding 16 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Serbian guard Branko Mirkovic (190-82, agency: Global Sports Plaza) responded with 20 points. Lukoil Academik have a solid series of three victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 10-1 record. Rilski Sportist at the other side keeps the third position with four games lost. Lukoil Academik's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Sofia to the arena Levski Sofia.

It was an exceptional evening for Serbian point guard Marko Marinovic (183-83) who led the winners and scored 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Nikolay Varbanov accounted for 11 points and 9 rebounds. Levski Sofia's coach Konstantin Papazov used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Brazilian center Atila Santos (208-83, college: Minnesota St., agency: Warren Sports International) came up with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 15 rebounds for Balkan in the defeat. Levski Sofia have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They maintain second place with 9-2 record behind leader Lukoil Academik. Balkan at the other side dropped to the fifth position with six games lost. Levski Sofia's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Sofia Lukoil Academik.
Bottom-ranked U20 (0-11) is still winless. This time they lost on the road their 11th consecutive match to ninth ranked Spartak Pleven (4-7) 86-76 on Sunday evening. The best player for the winners was Ilia Stankov who scored 25 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Deyan Karamfilov produced 11 points and 5 assists for the guests. U20's coach Lyubomir Minchev rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Spartak Pleven moved-up to eighth place. U20 lost their eleventh game in a row. Newly promoted team still closes the standings with 11 games lost. Spartak Pleven will meet higher ranked Rilski Sportist (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. U20 will play against Chernomorets (#9) in Burgas and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Burgas was also worth to mention about. Sixth ranked Tundja Yambol (6-5) played at the court of 8th ranked Chernomorets (3-7). Tundja Yambol managed to secure a 8-point victory 84-76. Martin Durchev orchestrated the victory by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 7 assists. Tundja Yambol moved-up to fourth place. Chernomorets lost their fifth game in a row. They dropped to the ninth position with seven games lost. Tundja Yambol's next round opponent will be Beroe (#7) in Stara Zagora. Chernomorets will play on the road against U20 in Sofia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Stara Zagora was also quite interesting. 5th ranked Euroins Cherno More (5-5) played at the court of seventh ranked Beroe (4-6). Beroe defeated Euroins Cherno More 94-80 on Sunday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Euroins Cherno More. It was a great evening for Will Walker who led his team to a victory with a triple-double by scoring 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Newly promoted Beroe maintains seventh place with 4-6 record. Loser Euroins Cherno More dropped to the sixth position with five games lost. Beroe will face higher ranked Tundja Yambol (#4) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.



Chernomorets - Tundja Yambol 76-84

The game in Burgas was also worth to mention about. Sixth ranked Tundja Yambol (6-5) played at the court of 8th ranked Chernomorets (3-7). Tundja Yambol managed to secure a 8-point victory 84-76. The guests were tied after three quarters but managed to speed up in last quarter eventually winning the game. Tundja Yambol dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Chernomorets' 26. Strangely Chernomorets outrebounded Tundja Yambol 41-29 including a 21-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. International Martin Durchev (204-87) orchestrated the victory by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 7 assists. The former international point guard Julian Radionov (187-79) contributed with a double-double by scoring 11 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists for the winners. American center James Tyler (218-88) answered with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 15 rebounds and Bogdan Boev (196-82) added 16 points and 5 assists in the effort for Chernomorets. Four Chernomorets players scored in double figures. Tundja Yambol moved-up to fourth place. Chernomorets lost their fifth game in a row. They dropped to the ninth position with seven games lost. Tundja Yambol's next round opponent will be Beroe (#7) in Stara Zagora. Chernomorets will play on the road against U20 in Sofia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Beroe dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Euroins Cherno More's 46 and made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Beroe looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a great evening for American guard Will Walker (183, college: De Paul) who led his team to a victory with a triple-double by scoring 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
