Here is the weekly review of the top performing Bulgarian players, who play currently abroad.


Earl Rowland

   #1. This week's number one is former international guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in Latvia. He could not help VEF Riga (0-1) in their last game. Despite Rowland's very good performance the fourth-placed VEF Riga lost 82-86 on the road to the second-ranked Valencia Basket in the group J of Eurocup. He was the top scorer with 21 points. Rowland also added 5 rebounds and 9 assists in 30 minutes on the court. Rowland has relatively good stats this year: 13.1ppg, 4.0rpg, 5.3apg, 2FGP: 53.8%, 3FGP: 31.8% and FT: 83.3% in the seven games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Rowland played for the Bulgarian senior national team two years ago. Strangely he has never played in Bulgaria.

   #2. Second place goes to former international guard Earl Calloway (191-83, college: Indiana, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Spain. He was not able to help Unicaja Malaga (1-2) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Calloway's good performance Unicaja Malaga (#6) was defeated 78-73 in Athens by the higher-ranked Panathinaikos (#4) in the group E of Euroleague. He was the top scorer with 14 points. This season Calloway has relatively solid stats: 10.5ppg, 2.4rpg, 2.2apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 61.5%(24-39), 3FGP: 53.2%(25-47) and FT: 72.2%. He is a naturalized American. Calloway played for the Bulgarian national team in 2010. Apparently he has never played in Bulgaria.

Cedric Simmons

   #3. The Bulgarian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Cedric Simmons (206-86, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian SerieA. Simmons was not able to secure a victory for Enel Brindisi (8-7) in their last game. Despite his good performance Enel Brindisi lost 76-83 at home to the lower-ranked (#8) Armani Milano. Simmons had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting the same number of rebounds. He also added 3 blocks in 31 minutes. Simmons is ranked third on the list of the best blockers in the league with 1.5bpg. This year he also averages: 6.7ppg, 5.7rpg, 2FGP: 56.0%(42-75) and FT: 70.8% in the 15 games. Simmons is a naturalized American. He is also a member of the Bulgarian senior national team. Interesting that Simmons has never played in Bulgaria.

   #4. Power forward Hristo Nikolov (200-85, currently plays in Romania) led U-Mobitelco to a victory over the closely-ranked CSU Sibiu (8-9) 89-76 in the Romanian Liga Nationala on Saturday night. He was MVP of the game. Nikolov scored 24 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists. CS U-Mobitelco Cluj Napoca (11-6) is placed seventh in the Liga Nationala. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Nikolov has reliable stats this season: 14.9ppg, 4.4rpg, 2.7apg and 1.9spg. He is also Bulgarian national team player.

   #5. International shooting guard Ivan Lilov (196-88, currently plays in Romania) couldn't help Gaz Metan (9-8) in their game against CS Farul Constanca (2-15) in the Romanian Liga Nationala. Despite his very good performance last Saturday Lilov was the second best scorer with 14 points. He also added 4 boards, passed 3 assists and added 3 steals. Lilov's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Lilov's overall stats this season are: 8.0ppg, 5.0rpg, 3.0apg and 2.0spg. He plays currently for the Bulgarian national team.

An experienced guard Andre Owens (193-80, college: Houston, currently plays in Cyprus) was the main contributor in Keravnos' victory against the closely-ranked Etha (9-4) 65-54 in the Cypriot Division A on Saturday night. Owens was the best player in that game. He recorded 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 21 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Keravnos Strovolou (11-2) is placed first in the Division A. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. This year Owens' overall stats are: 7.0ppg and 3.3rpg in the nine games. He is a naturalized American. Owens is a former international player as he played for the Bulgarian senior team four years ago. He used to play for Lukoil Academik Sofia in Bulgarian league.

Former international point guard Ibrahim Jaaber (187-84, college: Pennsylvania, currently plays in Euroleague) couldn't help Zalgiris (1-2) in their game against Real Madrid (3-0) in the Euroleague. Jaaber cannot count Friday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points. Zalgiris (#5) was edged 75-74 in Madrid by the leading Real in the group E of Euroleague. Jaaber is currently second on the list of most steals. His total stats this season are: 5.8ppg, 2.2rpg, 2.3apg and 1.9spg. Jaaber is a naturalized American. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team four years ago. However Jaaber has never played in Bulgaria.

   #8. Guard Roderick Blakney (184-76, college: S.Carolina St., currently plays in Spain) managed to help Cajasol Banca Civica Sevilla in a victory against the tenth-ranked Unicaja Malaga (8-9) 81-70 in the Spanish ACB last Sunday. He scored 5 points and added 5 assists in 21 minutes. Cajasol Banca Civica Sevilla (6-11) is placed 15th in the ACB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Blakney's total stats are: 5.0ppg and 2.5apg in the six games. He is a naturalized American. Blakney used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2007.

Ivanov averaged so far 13.3ppg, 8.3rpg, 1.5apg and 2.3spg. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team two years ago.

Center Jared Homan (206-83, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Germany) contributed to a Bayern Muenchen's victory against the 14th-ranked BBC Bayreuth (8-11) 84-72 in the German BBL in Sunday night's game. Homan recorded 5 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 19 minutes. FC Bayern Muenchen (12-6) is placed fourth in the BBL. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. Homan's stats this year are: 10.9ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.2apg and 1.1bpg in the 17 games. He is a naturalized American. Homan is a former international player as three years ago he still played for the Bulgarian senior national team.

   #11. Former international power forward Dejan Ivanov (205-86, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in VTB United League) couldn't help Lietuvos rytas in their game against Krasnie Krilya in the VTB United League. Ivanov cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. His team was badly defeated by 17 points 89-72. Ivanov has averaged so far 7.9ppg and 5.2rpg. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team two years ago.

   #12. Former international guard Aleksandar Gruev (187-83, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in Romania) was the major contributor in a CSU Sibiu's victory against the closely-ranked Rovinari 73-68 in the Romanian Liga Nationala on Wednesday night. Gruev recorded 18 points in 28 minutes. Gruev averaged so far 12.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 4.8apg in the 15 games. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2011.

   #13. International shooting guard Pavlin Ivanov (194-93, also represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Adriatic League) helped his Montenegrin team Buducnost win their game against the league outsider Szolnok crushing them 88-63 in the Adriatic League last Saturday. Ivanov scored only 4 points in 5 minutes on the court. This year he averages just 1.7ppg in the seven games. Ivanov is also Bulgarian national team player.

   #14. International forward Aleksandar Georgiev (203-90, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Assignia Manresa in their game against Caja Laboral in the Spanish ACB. He scored 5 points. His team was defeated in an overtime 101-95. Georgiev has averaged so far 4.8ppg and 2.1rpg. He plays currently for the Bulgarian national team.

   #15. Former international forward Hristo Petkov (202-85, college: Campbellsville, currently plays in Denmark) couldn't help Aarhus BC in their game against Svendborg in the Danish Ligaen, despite his very good performance in Wednesday night's game. Petkov was the top scorer with 13 points. He also added 4 rebounds in 21 minutes. But his team was crushed by 22 points 83-61. Petkov averaged so far 12.8ppg and 6.6rpg in the 18 games. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team twelve years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Bulgarian passport but never been selected to any of Bulgarian national teams:

   #1. Pero Antic (210-F-82, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Greece could not help Olympiacos (1-2) to beat Regal FC Barcelona (2-1). Antic scored 9 points. But Olympiacos (#5) was defeated 76-68 on the road by the higher-ranked Regal FC Barcelona (#4) in the group F of Euroleague. This season Antic averages: 6.2ppg and 3.5rpg. He has a dual citizenship: FYR Macedonian and Bulgarian.

   #2. Kee Kee Clark (180-PG-84, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Italy) was the major contributor in an Umana Venezia's surprising victory against the league leader Cimberio Varese (13-2) 87-85 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. Clark scored 24 points and added 8 assists in 32 minutes. Umana Reyer Venezia (7-8) is placed ninth in the SerieA. This year Clark has relatively solid stats: 14.5ppg, 1.8rpg, 2.1apg and 1.1spg in the 11 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Apparently Clark has never played in Bulgaria.

   #3. Experienced Willie Deane (188-PG-80, agency: Higher Vision Sports, college: Purdue, currently plays in Ukraine), who plays in the Ukrainian Superleague was not able to help Khimik (13-11) in their last game. Despite Deane's good performance Khimik lost 69-81 in Kyiv to the league outsider (#14) BC Kyiv. He was the second best scorer with 11 points. Deane also added 5 rebounds in 22 minutes. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Deane's first season with the team. His stats this year are: 10.8ppg, 3.0rpg and 5.5apg in the 22 games. Deane is a naturalized American. He used to play for PBC Lukoil Akademik Sophia in Bulgarian league.

   #4. Dinko Marshavelski (211-F/C-89, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Northeastern's victory against the Towson University (2-1) 70-59 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. Marshavelski scored 8 points and blocked 2 blocks. The Northeastern University has 4-0 conference record this season. So far his team won all four games in the conference. It's Marshavelski's fourth year with the team. He averaged so far 12.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 4.8apg.

   #5. Galin Mihaylov (189-G-80, currently plays in Norway) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Centrum (12-5) 90-74 in the Norwegian BLNO last Sunday. Mihaylov scored 8 points, made 5 passes and 3 steals. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Tromso Storm (13-3) is placed first in the BLNO. It's Mihaylov's seventh season with the team. He has averaged so far 8.5ppg, 1.7rpg and 2.8apg.

   #6. Kristoffer Gafor (194-G-92, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Basketettan (second division) was not able to secure a victory for Malbas (9-5) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Gafor's good performance Malbas (#3) was defeated 81-73 at home by the leading IK Eos in the South group. He recorded 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Gafor belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #7. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Gafor averages: 19.1ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.4apg and 2.4spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Swedish and Bulgarian.

   #7. Viktor Vladov (202-F-91, currently plays in Germany) managed to help BG Topstar Leitershofen/Stadtbergen in a victory against the eighth-ranked Dresden 106-88 in the German ProB (third division) last Friday. Vladov scored only 4 points in 16 minutes. It was his first game for Leitershofen this season. He has both Bulgarian and German nationalities.
