NBL Round 13: Lukoil Academik keeps a leadership position - Jan 19, 2013

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Lukoil Academik as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Lukoil Academik smashed 6th ranked Euroins Cherno More in Sofia 87-65. The game without a history. Lukoil Academik led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Euroins Cherno More to just 7 points in second quarter. Lukoil Academik dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Euroins Cherno More's 34 and made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. Lukoil Academik looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Euroins Cherno More's players. Worth to mention a great performance of American swingman Devin Green (201-82, college: Hampton) who helped to win the game recording 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. His fellow American import guard Brandon Heath (193-84, college: San Diego St.) contributed with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals for the winners. American guard Larry Hall (190-83, college: W.Oregon) answered with 17 points and 9 rebounds for Euroins Cherno More. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Levski Sofia. Euroins Cherno More lost third consecutive game. They keep the sixth place with seven games lost. Euroins Cherno More will play next round against Spartak Pleven trying to get back on the winning streak. Lukoil Academik will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Tundja Yambol on the road.
Bottom-ranked U20 is still unable to win any game. This time they lost on the road their 13th consecutive match to third ranked Rilski Sportist (9-4) 90-69. American point guard Terry Smith (185-86, college: Mercyhurst) stepped up and scored 20 points for the winners and Hristo Zahariev chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds. At the losing side forward Aleks Simeonov (200-93) responded with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Rilski Sportist maintains third place with 9-4 record having just two points less than leader Lukoil Academik. Newly promoted U20 still closes the standings with 13 games lost. Rilski Sportist will play against league's second-placed Levski Sofia on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. U20 will play against Beroe (#7) in Stara Zagora and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Botevgrad supposed to be also quite interesting. 4th placed Tundja Yambol (7-6) played at the court of fifth ranked Balkan (8-5). Balkan smashed Tundja Yambol 91-69 on Friday. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Tundja Yambol. Jordan Bozov nailed 19 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winning side. Martin Durchev came up with 24 points for Tundja Yambol in the defeat. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Balkan moved-up to fourth place. Tundja Yambol at the other side dropped to the fifth position with six games lost. Balkan will meet Chernomorets (#8) in the next round. Tundja Yambol will play against the league's leader Lukoil Academik in Sofia and hope to secure a win.

In the last two games of round 13 Chernomorets was beaten by Beroe on the road 98-88. Spartak Pleven lost to Levski Sofia on its own court 68-81.
The most impressive performance of 13th round was 29 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals by Will Walker of Beroe.



Beroe - Chernomorets 98-88

The game between closely ranked teams ended with seventh ranked Beroe's (5-8) home victory over 8th ranked Chernomorets (4-8) in Stara Zagora 98-88 on Saturday. The game without a history. Beroe led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They also forced 20 Chernomorets turnovers. Beroe looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American guard Will Walker (183, college: De Paul) nailed 29 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals for the winning side and his fellow American import guard Reginald Holmes (193-87, college: Morgan St.) accounted for 21 points and 5 rebounds. Beroe's coach Georgi Mladenov used an eleven-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. American center James Tyler (218-88) came up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 18 rebounds and 6 blocks and Serbian guard Petar Rakovic (190-89) added 16 points respectively for Chernomorets in the defeat. Four Beroe and five Chernomorets players scored in double figures. Newly promoted Beroe maintains seventh place with 5-8 record. Chernomorets at the other side keeps the eighth position with eight games lost. Beroe will meet bottom-ranked U20 (#10) in the next round. Chernomorets will play against Balkan in Botevgrad and hope to secure a win.

Bottom-ranked U20 is still unable to win any game. This time they lost on the road their 13th consecutive match to third ranked Rilski Sportist (9-4) 90-69. The game was mostly controlled by Rilski Sportist. U20 was better in third quarter 23-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 18-of-23 charity shots (78.3 percent) during the game. Rilski Sportist shot the lights out from three nailing 14 long-distance shots on high 51.9 percentage. They brought some defensive toughness making 9 blocks. Spartak Pleven - Levski Sofia 68-81

Very expected game when 9th ranked Spartak Pleven (4-9) lost at home to second ranked Levski Sofia (11-2) 81-68 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Levski Sofia. Spartak Pleven managed to win fourth quarter 25-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Spartak Pleven 43-23 including a 30-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. The former international center Nikolay Varbanov (210-85, agency: Interperformances) nailed a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds for the winning side and the former international Dimitar Anguelov (203-79, agency: Interperformances) accounted for 15 points and 6 rebounds. Levski Sofia's coach Konstantin Papazov used an eleven-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. The former international forward Ilia Stankov (198-76) came up with 15 points and center Denis Agre (203-88, college: Pepperdine) added 12 points and 6 rebounds respectively for Spartak Pleven in the defeat.
