NBL Round 14: Rilski Sportist defeats Levski Sofia in the closest game of the week - Jan 26, 2013

The most exciting game of round 14 in the NBL took place in Sofia. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of second-ranked Levski Sofia (11-3) to third ranked Rilski Sportist (10-4) 88-85 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the eight-game winning streak of Levski Sofia. The guests trailed by 5 points after three quarters before their 24-16 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Rilski Sportist made 24-of-30 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. 26 personal fouls committed by Levski Sofia helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Serbian guard Branko Mirkovic (190-82, agency: Global Sports Plaza) scored 32 points and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and international Hristo Zahariev (197-90) chipped in 18 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. Serbian point guard Marko Marinovic (183-83) responded with 28 points and 8 assists. Levski Sofia's coach Konstantin Papazov rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Rilski Sportist have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 10-4 record having just two points less than leader Lukoil Academik. Levski Sofia at the other side keeps the second place with three games lost. Rilski Sportist are looking forward to face Tundja Yambol (#5) at home in the next round. Levski Sofia's supporters also look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Sofia U20.
Eighth-ranked Chernomorets (4-9) gave a tough game to fourth ranked Balkan (9-5) in Burgas. The visitors from Botevgrad managed to secure only one-point victory 96-95. However their fans expected much easier game. The former international guard Jordan Bozov (191-79, agency: Global Sports Plaza) notched 28 points, 6 assists and 4 steals to lead the effort and Atila Santos supported him with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Balkan's coach Aleksandar Todorov allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Even a double-double of 22 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocks by American center James Tyler (218-88) did not help to save the game for Chernomorets. Balkan have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 9-5 record. Chernomorets at the other side keeps the eighth place with nine games lost. Balkan will play against Beroe (#7) in Stara Zagora in the next round. Chernomorets will play at home against the league's leader Lukoil Academik in Sofia and hopes to get back on the winning track.
NBL top team - Lukoil Academik (12-2) had no problems winning another game on Friday. This time they crushed fifth ranked Tundja Yambol (7-7) 100-69. The best player for the winners was Darryl Watkins who scored 19 points and 6 rebounds. Nemanja Milosevic produced 15 points and 9 rebounds for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending champion maintains first position with 12-2 record. Loser Tundja Yambol keeps the fifth place with seven games lost. Lukoil Academik will meet Chernomorets (#8) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Tundja Yambol will play against Rilski Sportist in Samokov and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked U20 (0-14) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 14th consecutive match to seventh ranked Beroe (6-8) 95-71. Will Walker orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted Beroe maintains seventh position with 6-8 record. U20 at the other side, also newcomer in the league, still closes the standings with 14 games lost. Beroe's next round opponent will be higher ranked Balkan (#4) in Botevgrad and it may be quite challenging game. U20's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Sofia to the arena Levski Sofia.

Asen Velikov had a double-double by scoring 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. Euroins Cherno More's coach Spas Natov used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Euroins Cherno More maintains sixth position with 6-7 record. Spartak Pleven lost third consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with ten games lost. Euroins Cherno More will face higher ranked Rilski Sportist (#3) in Samokov in the next round and it may be quite challenging game.



Levski Sofia - Rilski Sportist 85-88

U20 - Beroe 71-95

Bottom-ranked U20 (0-14) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 14th consecutive match to seventh ranked Beroe (6-8) 95-71. The game was mostly controlled by Beroe. U20 was better in fourth quarter 17-11. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to U20's 34. Beroe forced 21 U20 turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. 28 personal fouls committed by U20 helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Will Walker (183, college: De Paul) orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. Power forward Milen Dimitrov (204-88) contributed with 17 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Four Beroe players scored in double figures. Naturalized Danish forward Tencho Tenchev (202-93, agency: Interperformances) replied with 20 points and Nikolay Stoyanov (195-94) added 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for U20. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Balkan Botevgrad (NBL) is close to ink 25-year old Bulgarian international guard Stanimir Marinov (192-88kg-91, agency: Interperformances) who played last time at Sigal Prishtina in Kosovo.
