NBL Round 16: Rilski Sportist loses to Tundja Yambol - Feb 10, 2013

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in NBL.

The most important game in the last round took place in Yambol between third ranked Rilski Sportist (11-5) and fifth ranked Tundja Yambol (9-7) on Saturday night. Rilski Sportist was defeated by Tundja Yambol in a tough game on the road 81-85. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Rilski Sportist. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Worth to mention a great performance of international Martin Durchev (204-87) who helped to win the game recording 24 points and 8 assists. Montenegrin power forward Nemanja Milosevic (204-87, college: W.Kentucky, agency: Interperformances) contributed with 18 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. American point guard Terry Smith (185-86, college: Mercyhurst) replied with 19 points for Rilski Sportist. Tundja Yambol maintains fifth position with 9-7 record. Rilski Sportist at the other side keeps the third place with five games lost. They share the position with Balkan. Tundja Yambol are looking forward to face league's second-placed Levski Sofia on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Rilski Sportist will play against Chernomorets in Burgas and is hoping to win this game.
NBL top team - Lukoil Academik (14-2) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat seventh ranked Beroe (6-10) in Stara Zagora 88-78. Worth to mention a quality performance of American center Darryl Watkins (211-84, college: Syracuse) who helped to win the game recording 24 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 7 blocks and Bozhidar Avramov who added 16 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side American guard Reginald Holmes (193-87, college: Morgan St.) responded with 31 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Lukoil Academik have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 14-2 record. Newly promoted Beroe keeps the seventh place with ten games lost. Lukoil Academik will play against Balkan (#3) in Botevgrad in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Beroe will play on the road against Spartak Pleven (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 16th consecutive match to fourth ranked Balkan (11-5) 84-69 on Saturday evening. The winners were led by Jordan Bozov who had that evening a double-double by scoring 16 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists. Even 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists by Tencho Tenchev did not help to save the game for U20. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Balkan have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Rilski Sportist. Newly promoted U20 still closes the standings. Balkan will meet league's leader Lukoil Academik in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. U20 will play against Euroins Cherno More (#6) in Varna and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Varna supposed to be also worth to mention about. Second ranked Levski Sofia (13-3) played at the court of 6th ranked Euroins Cherno More (6-9). Levski Sofia smashed Euroins Cherno More 94-68. Chavdar Kostov fired 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Levski Sofia maintains second position with 13-3 record behind leader Lukoil Academik. Euroins Cherno More at the other side keeps the sixth place with nine games lost. Levski Sofia's next round opponent will be Tundja Yambol (#5) at home. Euroins Cherno More will play against U20 in Sofia.

In the last game of round 16 Spartak Pleven was beaten by Chernomorets on the road 90-81.
The most impressive performance of 16th round was 26 points and 19 rebounds by James Tyler of Chernomorets.


Cherno More - Levski Sofia 68-94

The game in Varna supposed to be also worth to mention about. Second ranked Levski Sofia (13-3) played at the court of 6th ranked Euroins Cherno More (6-9). Levski Sofia smashed Euroins Cherno More 94-68. The game without a history. Levski Sofia led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Euroins Cherno More's 26. Levski Sofia had a 31-19 advantage in offensive rebounds. International Chavdar Kostov (195-88, agency: Interperformances) fired 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. The former international center Nikolay Varbanov (210-85, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds. Croatian-Canadian center Ljubisa Vrcelj (210-84, college: Jacksonville) produced 19 points and 6 rebounds and the former international point guard Asen Velikov (185-86) added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. U20 - Balkan 69-84

Bottom-ranked U20 is still unable to win any game. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 16th consecutive match to fourth ranked Balkan (11-5) 84-69 on Saturday evening. The guests trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 9-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 84-69. Balkan made 22-of-28 free shots (78.6 percent) during the game. The winners were led by the former international guard Jordan Bozov (191-79, agency: Global Sports Plaza) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 16 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists and Serbian forward Vladimir Panic (194-82) supported him with 20 points. Even 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists by naturalized Danish forward Tencho Tenchev (202-93, agency: Interperformances) did not help to save the game for U20. point guard Deyan Karamfilov (180-94) added 9 points for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Balkan have an impressive five-game winning streak. The game between closely ranked teams ended with eighth ranked Chernomorets' (5-10) home victory over 9th ranked Spartak Pleven (4-12) in Burgas 90-81. The game without a history. Chernomorets led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Spartak Pleven's 30. They outrebounded Spartak Pleven 43-26 including a 26-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. American center James Tyler (218-88) fired a double-double by scoring 26 points and 19 rebounds (on 10-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winners. Forward Konstantin Koev (195-91) chipped in 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Tyler is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Power forward Dimitar Marintchechki (201-90, agency: Dynamics Global Management) produced a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds and the former international forward Ilia Stankov (198-76) added 21 points respectively for lost side. Five Chernomorets and four Spartak Pleven players scored in double figures. Chernomorets maintains eighth position with 5-10 record. Spartak Pleven lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with 12 games lost. Chernomorets' next round opponent will be higher ranked Rilski Sportist (#4) in Samokov and it may be quite challenging game. Lukoil Academik players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. They brought some defensive toughness making 10 blocks. Beroe was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch.
