We bring you last week's top performances from Bulgarians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Dejan Ivanov

   #1. This week's number one is former international power forward Dejan Ivanov (205-86, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in VTB United League). He led his Lithuanian team Lietuvos rytas to an easy victory against the eighth-ranked Kalev/Cramo (3-11) crushing them 95-73 in the VTB United League in Sunday night's game. Ivanov scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 28 minutes on the court. Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (8-6) is placed fifth in group A. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Ivanov's first season with the team. This year he averages: 8.7ppg, 6.1rpg, 2FGP: 66.1%(37-56), 3FGP: 16.7% and FT: 67.5% in the 12 games he played so far. Ivanov played for the Bulgarian senior national team two years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former international guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in VTB United League). He contributed to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked Enisey Krasnoyarsk (5-9) 85-69 in the VTB United League last Monday. Rowland recorded 10 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists. VEF Riga (9-5) is placed fourth in group B. There are only four games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Rowland is the league's top scorer and also on the list of best passers (second place). He has individually a very good season with high stats. Rowland averages: 16.9ppg, 5.7rpg, 6.1apg, 2.1spg, 2FGP: 57.0%(77-135), 3FGP: 30.8% and FT: 83.6%. He is a naturalized American. Rowland played for the Bulgarian national team in 2011. Strangely he has never played in Bulgaria.

   #3. The Bulgarian player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international guard Andre Owens (193-80, college: Houston, currently plays in Cyprus). He led Keravnos to a victory over the closely-ranked AEK (14-5) 69-54 in the Cypriot Division A in Tuesday night's game. Owens was MVP of the game. He scored 20 points. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Keravnos Strovolou (16-3) is placed first in the Division A. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Owens' overall stats this season are: 9.2ppg, 3.4rpg, 1.8apg, 2FGP: 44.8%, 3FGP: 34.8% and FT: 67.9%. He is a naturalized American. Owens played for the Bulgarian national team four years ago. He used to play for Lukoil Academik Sofia in Bulgarian league.

   #4. Power forward Hristo Nikolov (200-85, currently plays in Romania), who plays in the Romanian Liga Nationala could not help U-Mobitelco (14-7) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance U-Mobitelco was crushed 84-59 on the road by the lower-ranked Gaz Metan (#8). Nikolov was the top scorer with 15 points. He also added 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Nikolov has relatively good stats this season: 14.7ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.6apg and 1.6spg. He is also Bulgarian national team player.

   #5. International shooting guard Ivan Lilov (196-88, currently plays in Romania) faced previously mentioned Hristo Nikolov in the Romanian Liga Nationala last game. Lilov contributed to an easy victory against the fourth-ranked U-Mobitelco (14-7) crushing them 84-59. He scored 11 points. Lilov's overall stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 3.5rpg, 2.2apg and 1.7spg. He plays currently for the Bulgarian national team.

   #6. Center Jared Homan (206-83, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked ALBA Berlin (12-7) 79-61 in the German BBL on Sunday night. Homan recorded 7 points and blocked 2 shots in 22 minutes. FC Bayern Muenchen (15-7) is placed second in the BBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Homan has relatively solid stats: 10.2ppg, 5.7rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1bpg in the 21 games. He is a naturalized American. Homan is a former international player as he played for the Bulgarian senior team three years ago. Apparently he has never played in Bulgaria.

Former international guard Aleksandar Gruev (187-83, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in Romania), who plays in the Romanian Liga Nationala was not able to help CSU Sibiu (10-11) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Gruev's good performance CSU Sibiu was crushed 90-68 at home by the lower-ranked Craiova (#10). He scored 10 points and added 3 assists. Gruev belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #7. He has very reliable stats this season: 13.3ppg, 2.6rpg and 4.7apg. Gruev used to play for the Bulgarian national team two years ago.

   #8. Center Krum Doychinov (206-86, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Greece) contributed to OFI's surprising victory against the fifth-ranked Ikaroi Serron (10-6) 69-66 in the Greek A2 (second division) on Sunday night. Doychinov recorded 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. OF Irakleio (4-12) is placed second from the bottom (#13) in the A2. Doychinov is ranked second on the list of the best blockers in the league. His overall stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 6.7rpg, 1.3apg and 1.1bpg. Doychinov used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2010.


The list of other players, who all have Bulgarian passport but never been selected to any of Bulgarian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Willie Deane (188-PG-80, agency: Higher Vision Sports, college: Purdue, currently plays in Ukraine) was the major contributor in an overtime Khimik's victory against the closely-ranked Cherkasy (15-15) 93-87 in the Ukrainian Superleague on Friday night. Deane scored 16 points and added 6 assists in 31 minutes. Khimik-OPZ Yuzny (16-12) is placed fifth in the Superleague. Deane has relatively good stats this year: 11.5ppg, 3.1rpg, 6.0apg and 1.1spg in the 26 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Deane used to play for PBC Lukoil Akademik Sophia in Bulgarian league.

   #2. Dimitar Karadzovski (190-G-84, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in FYR Macedonia) led Kozuv to a victory over the fifth-ranked ABA Strumica (5-5) 91-83 in the FYR Macedonian Prva Liga last Saturday. Karadzovski was the best player in that game. He recorded 21 points and added 3 passes in 30 minutes. Kozuv Gevgelija (8-2) is placed first in the Prva Liga. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Karadzovski belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #3 with 3.6apg. This year he also averages: 13.4ppg and 2.9rpg in the 10 games. Karadzovski has a dual citizenship: Bulgarian and FYR Macedonian.

   #3. Pero Antic (210-F-82, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Greece) managed to help Olympiacos S.F.P. Pireus in a victory against the closely-ranked Panathinaikos (13-3) 72-67 in a derby game in the Greek A1 in Monday night's game. Antic scored only 2 points in 13 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Olympiacos S.F.P. Pireus (15-1) is placed first in the A1. This year Antic's overall stats are: 5.2ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.1apg in the 13 games. He is another player who holds two passports: FYR Macedonian and Bulgarian.

   #4. Viktor Vladov (202-F-91, currently plays in Germany), who plays in the German ProB (third division) could not help Leitershofen (8-10) to beat Licher Baeren (10-8). He scored only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 12 minutes. The eighth-placed Leitershofen lost 62-70 on the road to the higher-ranked (#5) Licher Baeren in the Group South. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. This year Vladov's overall stats are: 3.3ppg and 2.5rpg in the four games. He has both Bulgarian and German nationalities.

29-year old power forward Maxym Korniyenko (205-F/C-87, agency: BeoBasket) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for league's best team Lukoil Acad. and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 8. He had the game-high 24 points adding seven rebounds and three assists for Lukoil Acad. in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Rilski (#4, 4-3) 94-90. An interesting game for Lukoil Acad. (7-1) which played road game in Samokov against 4th ranked Rilski (4-3). First ranked Lukoil Acad. managed to get a 4-point victory 94-90. Lukoil Acad. made 23-of-28 free shots (82.1 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Division A Round 9: Akademik Sofia beats Levski 2014-2 in a derby game - 7 days ago

The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games. The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Sofia: Akademik Sofia (#4) and Levski 2014-2 (#2).
