NBL Round 22: Haskovo 2012 hands first loss to undefeated Neftochimic - Mar 2, 2013

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Neftochimic (17-1) on the court of third ranked Haskovo 2012 on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by Haskovo 2012 84-80. They made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Zornitsa Naydenova (172-89) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 27 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Latvian center Anita Teilane (196-85) contributed with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 5 blocks for the winners. American power forward Ashley Gayle (193-90, college: Texas, agency: LBM Management) replied with a double-double by scoring 31 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists for Neftochimic. Newly promoted Haskovo 2012 maintains third position with 9-9 record having eight points less than leader Neftochimic, which they share with Levski. Neftochimic at the other side still keeps top place with one game lost. Haskovo 2012 will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Neftochimic will play at home against Rilski Sportist in Samokov and is hoping to win this game.
Important game to mention about took place in Stara Zagora. Fifth ranked Montana 2003 (8-10) saved a 1-point victory on the road edging 6th ranked Beroe (5-13) 61-60 on Saturday evening. The former international power forward Milena Tomova (189-82, college: FIU) had a double-double by scoring 17 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals to lead the charge for the winners and Radostina Slavova-Naneva chipped in 11 points and 16 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side American center Daphnee Frieson (193-88, college: Stetson) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds. Montana 2003 have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place. Beroe lost twelfth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with 13 games lost. Montana 2003 will play against league's second-placed Dunav 8806 in Ruse in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Beroe will play on the road against Levski (#5) in Sofia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Samokov supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Dunav 8806 (14-4) played at the court of 7th ranked Rilski Sportist (1-17). Dunav 8806 smashed Rilski Sportist 76-49 on Saturday. Kristina Santiago notched a double-double by scoring 27 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field) to lead the effort. Dunav 8806's coach Georgi Bozhkov felt very confident using 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even 8 points and 11 rebounds by Anne Farrell did not help to save the game for Rilski Sportist. Defending champion maintains second position with 14-4 record having just three points less than leader Neftochimic. Rilski Sportist lost seventh consecutive game. They stay dead last with 17 lost games. Dunav 8806 will meet Montana 2003 (#4) on the road in the next round. Rilski Sportist will play against the league's leader Neftochimic in Burgas.

Dunav 8806 dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Rilski Sportist's 22. American forward Kristina Santiago (185-89, college: Cal Poly - SLO, agency: LBM Management) notched a double-double by scoring 27 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field) to lead the effort and the other American import forward Amanda Johnson (187-90, college: Oregon, agency: LBM Management) supported her with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
