Here is the weekly review of the top performing Bulgarian players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is former international guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in VTB United League). He led his Latvian team VEF Riga to a victory over the tenth-ranked Tsmoki-Minsk (1-15) 85-74 in the VTB United League last Thursday. Rowland was MVP of the game. He recorded 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. VEF Riga (10-6) is placed fourth in group B. There are only two games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Rowland's first season with the team. Rowland is currently third on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of best passers (second place). He has individually a very good season with high stats. Rowland averages: 16.7ppg, 5.8rpg, 6.1apg, 2.2spg, 2FGP: 55.9%(85-152), 3FGP: 30.4% and FT: 82.1%. He is a naturalized American. Rowland played for the Bulgarian senior national team two years ago. Strangely he has never played in Bulgaria.

   #2. Second place goes to former international power forward Dejan Ivanov (205-86, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in VTB United League), who plays in Lithuania. Ivanov could not help Lietuvos rytas (8-8) to beat Khimky (12-4). He recorded 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. The sixth-placed Lietuvos rytas was defeated 88-79 at home by the leading Khimky in the group A of VTB United League. There are only two games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Ivanov's overall stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 6.3rpg, 2FGP: 62.3%(43-69), 3FGP: 12.5% and FT: 67.3%. He played for the Bulgarian national team in 2011.

The Bulgarian player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced international small forward Filip Videnov (196-80, agency: Alti Sport, college: W.Kentucky, currently plays in Turkey). Videnov was the main contributor in an Olin Edirne's victory against one of league's weakest teams Antalya (4-16) 71-59 in the Turkish TBL last Saturday. He was the best player in that game. Videnov scored 23 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 33 minutes. Olin Edirne Basketball (5-15) is placed 14th in the TBL. Videnov has very impressive stats this year: 16.6ppg, 4.0rpg, 2.4apg, 2FGP: 60.7%(17-28) in the five games he played so far. He is also a member of the Bulgarian senior national team.

   #4. Power forward Cedric Simmons (206-86, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian SerieA was not able to help Enel Brindisi (10-11) in their last game. Despite Simmons' very good performance Enel Brindisi was edged 95-93 on their home court in Brindisi by the second-ranked Banco di Sardegna Sassari. He was the top scorer with 16 points. Simmons also added 5 rebounds in 23 minutes. This year Simmons' overall stats are: 8.7ppg, 6.3rpg and 1.2bpg in the 21 games. He is a naturalized American. Simmons is also Bulgarian national team player. Apparently he has never played in Bulgaria.

Former international forward Kaloyan Ivanov (205-86, also represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Italy) contributed to a Air Avellino's surprising victory against the fifth-ranked Cantu (13-8) 63-52 in the Italian SerieA last Sunday. Ivanov scored 9 points and grabbed 21 rebounds. Sidigas Avellino (6-14) is placed 14th in the SerieA. Ivanov has relatively good stats this season: 12.3ppg, 9.5rpg, 1.1apg and 1.8spg. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team two years ago.

Guard Earl Calloway (191-83, college: Indiana, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Unicaja Malaga in a victory against the fourth-ranked Gescrap BB (14-9) 63-59 in the Spanish ACB on Sunday night. Calloway scored only 3 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 16 minutes. Unicaja Malaga (11-12) is placed 11th in the ACB. This year Calloway's total stats are: 6.9ppg, 3.3rpg, 2.2apg and 1.2spg in the 23 games. He is a naturalized American. Calloway is a former international player as he played for the Bulgarian senior team three years ago. Interesting that he has never played in Bulgaria.

International power forward Hristo Nikolov (200-85, currently plays in Romania) was the major contributor in U-Mobitelco's victory against the 14th-ranked CS Farul Constanta (4-21) 77-65 in the Romanian Liga Nationala in Tuesday night's game. Nikolov scored 17 points. CS U-Mobitelco Cluj Napoca (17-8) is placed seventh in the Liga Nationala. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This season Nikolov has relatively solid stats: 14.7ppg, 4.0rpg, 2.8apg and 1.7spg. He is also Bulgarian national team player.

Center Jared Homan (206-83, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Germany) helped Bayern Muenchen win their game against the league leader Brose Baskets Bamberg (21-3) 85-71 in the German BBL in Sunday night's game. He recorded only 4 points in 18 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. FC Bayern Muenchen (17-8) is placed second in the BBL. Homan has averaged so far 10.0ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1bpg in the 24 games. He is a naturalized American. Homan used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2010. However he has never played in Bulgaria.

Former international center Krum Doychinov (206-86, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Greece) helped OFI win their game against the eighth-ranked Pagrati (9-9) 94-79 in the Greek A2 (second division) last Saturday. Doychinov was the top player that evening. He scored 19 points, had 7 boards, handed out 3 passes and blocked 2 shots. OF Irakleio (5-13) is placed 12th in the A2. Doychinov is ranked second on the list of the best blockers in the league. He has averaged so far 9.7ppg, 6.4rpg, 1.4apg and 1.1bpg. Doychinov used to play for the Bulgarian national team three years ago.

Guard Aleksandar Gruev (187-83, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in Romania), who plays in the Romanian Liga Nationala was not able to secure a victory for CSU Sibiu (12-13) in their last game. Despite his good performance CSU Sibiu was edged 75-74 on their home court in Sibiu by the higher-ranked (#5) Gaz Metan. Gruev recorded 14 points and added 5 assists (made all of his five free throws) in 36 minutes. Gruev is ranked seventh on the list of the best passers in the league with 4.7apg. This year his other stats are: 13.4ppg and 2.5rpg in the 23 games. Gruev is a former international player as two years ago he still played for the Bulgarian senior national team.

   #11. International shooting guard Ivan Lilov (196-88, currently plays in Romania) helped Gaz Metan win their game against the league outsider CS Dinamo Bucuresti crushing them 84-48 in the Romanian Liga Nationala in Wednesday night's game. He scored 6 points. Lilov has averaged so far 9.2ppg, 3.4rpg, 2.1apg and 1.5spg. He plays currently for the Bulgarian national team.

   #12. Former international guard Roderick Blakney (184-76, college: S.Carolina St., currently plays in Spain) helped Cajasol win their game against the seventh-ranked Valencia Basket 72-66 in the Spanish ACB last Saturday. Blakney scored only 4 points in 19 minutes. He has averaged so far 6.4ppg, 1.1rpg and 2.5apg in the 12 games. Blakney is a naturalized American. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2007.

   #13. Former U20 international guard Georgi Sirakov (186-92, another player represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Mazzeo San Severo in their game against Recanati in the Italian Nazionale A (third division). Sirakov scored 5 points in 25 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 17 points 71-54. This year he averages only 7.5ppg in the 25 games. Sirakov used to play for the Bulgarian U20 national team two years ago.

   #14. International forward Aleksandar Georgiev (203-90, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Assignia Manresa in their game against Lagun Aro GBC in the Spanish ACB. He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Georgiev scored only 1 points. His team was defeated 94-90. He has averaged so far 5.0ppg and 2.2rpg. Georgiev plays currently for the Bulgarian national team.


The list of other players, who all have Bulgarian passport but never been selected to any of Bulgarian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Willie Deane (188-PG-80, agency: Higher Vision Sports, college: Purdue, currently plays in Ukraine) led Khimik to a victory over the closely-ranked Ferro-ZNTU (20-14) 91-85 in the Ukrainian Superleague in Friday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Deane scored 40 points (!!!) and added 8 assists in 35 minutes. Khimik-OPZ Yuzny (19-13) is placed fifth in the Superleague. Deane has relatively good stats this year: 12.6ppg, 3.0rpg and 6.1apg in the 30 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Deane used to play for PBC Lukoil Akademik Sophia in Bulgarian league.

   #2. Pero Antic (210-F-82, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Greece) contributed to an easy victory against the 11th-ranked Kavala (5-14) 94-76 in the Greek A1 on Sunday night. Antic recorded 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 17 minutes. Olympiacos S.F.P. Pireus (18-1) is placed first in the A1. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. This year Antic's overall stats are: 5.9ppg and 2.9rpg in the 16 games. He has a dual citizenship: FYR Macedonian and Bulgarian.

   #3. Ilian Evtimov (201-F-83, agency: Interperformances, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in France) managed to help ES Chalon-Sur-Saone to win in overtime against the league leader Gravelines-Dunkerque (15-6) 69-67 in the French ProA on Saturday night. Evtimov scored only 4 points, had 9 boards, passed 4 assists and added 3 steals. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. ES Chalon-Sur-Saone (13-7) is placed third in the ProA. Evtimov has relatively good stats this season: 11.2ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.9apg and 1.1spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Bulgarian and French.

   #4. Dimitar Karadzovski (190-G-84, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in FYR Macedonia), who plays in the FYR Macedonian Prva Liga could not help Kozuv (10-3) in their last game. Despite Karadzovski's very good performance the league leader Kozuv was edged 79-78 on the road by the second-ranked Lirija. He was the second best scorer with 16 points in 26 minutes. It was Kozuv's first loss after nine consecutive victories. Karadzovski's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Karadzovski is ranked fifth on the list of the best passers in the league with 3.3apg. This year he also averages: 13.2ppg and 2.7rpg in the 13 games. Karadzovski has both Bulgarian and FYR Macedonian nationalities.

   #5. Kee Kee Clark (180-PG-84, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Italy) was not able to help Umana Venezia (11-10) in their game against Sutor Montegranaro (7-14) in the Italian SerieA. He scored 5 points. Umana Venezia was crushed 88-64 in Montegranaro by the lower-ranked Sutor (#13). Clark has reliable stats this season: 12.9ppg, 2.2rpg and 2.2apg. He is a naturalized American. However Clark has never played in Bulgaria.

   #6. Viktor Vladov (202-F-91, currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against the 11th-ranked ifm Baskets Konstanz crushing them 95-73 in the German ProB (third division) on Saturday night. He scored 6 points. Vladov has averaged so far 3.4ppg and 3.1rpg. He also holds two passports: Bulgarian and German.
  



Division A Round 9: Akademik Sofia beats Levski 2014-2 in a derby game - 13 hours ago

The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games. The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Sofia: Akademik Sofia (#4) and Levski 2014-2 (#2). Levski 2014-2 was defeated at home 64-70 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. Akademic Bultex 99 Plovdiv (NBL) landed American guard Theo Johnson (198-93kg, college: Liberty). He spent the pre-season at Peja in the Kosovan SuperLeague, but eventually didn't sign for them. Johnson just graduated from Liberty University and this is his first season in pro basketball. Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions (A Bundesliga) signed 23-year old Bulgarian international power forward Dimitar Dimitrov (203-93, agency: Interperformances). It is actually his comeback to Arkadia Lions as he has played here before. Dimitrov already started the season at Lukoil Academic Sofia in Bulgarian NBL league.
