We bring you last week's top performances from Bulgarians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Darius Adams

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Darius Adams (188-89, agency: Stealth Sport, college: Indianapolis, currently plays in China). He was the major contributor in a Xinjiang Flying Tige's victory against the 11th-ranked Jiangsu Dragons (12-13) 109-98 in the Chinese CBA in Wednesday night's game. Adams recorded 35 points (!!!), 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in 34 minutes on the court. Xinjiang Flying Tigers (20-5) are placed third in the CBA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Adams has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 33.2ppg, 5.9rpg, 5.8apg, 2.3spg, 2FGP: 56.3%(179-318), 3FGP: 35.4% and FT: 86.7% in 24 games he played so far. Adams is a naturalized American. He is currently a member of the Bulgarian senior national team. Strangely Adams has never played in Bulgaria.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international point guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in VTB United League). He could not help one of league's weakest teams Khimky (8-3) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Rowland's good performance Khimky was defeated 114-110 on the road by the higher-ranked Zenit (#4). He scored 13 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 5 assists. It's Rowland's first season with the team. Rowland has relatively good stats this year: 10.7ppg, 3.4rpg, 3.7apg, 2FGP: 40.8%, 3FGP: 35.3% and FT: 82.6%. He is a naturalized American. Rowland played for the Bulgarian national team in 2011. Apparently he has never played in Bulgaria.

   #3. The Bulgarian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Alexander Vezenkov (206-95, currently plays in Spain). Vezenkov led FC Barcelona to an easy victory against the 15th-ranked Blusens Monbus (4-10) crushing them 100-76 in the Spanish Liga Endesa on Sunday night. He recorded 13 points in 20 minutes. FC Barcelona Lassa (12-3) is placed first in the Liga Endesa. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Vezenkov's overall stats are: 9.1ppg, 3.7rpg, 2FGP: 68.8%(33-48), 3FGP: 38.6% and FT: 76.9% in 15 games. He has a dual citizenship: Cypriot and Bulgarian. Despite Vezenkov played previously for the Cypriot U16 national team, he is currently a member of the Bulgarian senior national team.

   #4. Point guard Dee Bost (188-89, agency: Three Eye Sports, college: Mississippi St., currently plays in Basketball Champions League) contributed to Monaco's victory against the sixth-ranked Ironi Nahariya (3-8) 73-67 in the Basketball Champions League last Tuesday. He scored 8 points and had 4 steals in 24 minutes. AS Monaco Basket (10-1) is placed first in group A. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Bost has relatively solid stats: 12.4ppg, 3.8rpg, 4.4apg and 1.3spg in 10 games. He is a naturalized American. Bost is also Bulgarian national team player. Interesting that he has never played in Bulgaria.

International shooting guard Ivan Lilov (194-88, agency: Two Points, currently plays in Hungary) led Szedeak to a victory over the closely-ranked KTE-Duna (6-6) 86-77 in the Hungarian A Division on Wednesday night. Lilov was MVP of the game. He scored 33 points (!!!) and grabbed 8 rebounds (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line). Naturtex-SZTE-Szedeak Szeged (6-6) is placed seventh in the A Division. This season Lilov has very high stats. He averages: 21.3ppg, 4.3rpg, 4.1apg and 1.7spg. Lilov plays currently for the Bulgarian national team.

Power forward Dejan Ivanov (205-86, agency: BeoBasket, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to a Yesilgiresun Bld's victory against the closely-ranked Tofas (6-8) 84-79 in the Turkish BSL in Saturday night's game. He had a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds in 36 minutes. Yesilgiresun Belediye (7-7) is placed eighth in the BSL. Ivanov has reliable stats this year: 12.5ppg and 8.0rpg in two games. He is a former international player as he played for the Bulgarian senior team four years ago.

Former international power forward Hristo Nikolov (200-85, agency: 011 Sports, currently plays in Poland) helped Stal Ostrow Wlkp. win their game against the closely-ranked PGE Turow (8-6) 82-71 in the Polish PLK last Saturday. Nikolov recorded 14 points. BM Slam Stal Ostrow Wlkp. (8-7) is placed ninth in the PLK. Nikolov's stats this season are: 10.1ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.3apg. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team three years ago.

Power forward Cedric Simmons (206-86, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Estonia) helped Kalev/Cramo win their game against the closely-ranked TU/Rock (9-2) 85-75 in the Estonian Alexela KML on Saturday night. Simmons scored 11 points, had 9 rebounds and made 3 blocks in 27 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. BC Kalev/Cramo Tallinn (9-2) is placed first in the Alexela KML. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Simmons' total stats are: 9.5ppg, 5.7rpg, 2.0apg and 1.3bpg in six games. He is a naturalized American. Simmons used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2012. However he has never played in Bulgaria.

Former international guard Earl Calloway (191-83, college: Indiana, currently plays in Turkey) helped Istanbul BBSK win their game against the fourth-ranked Banvit (10-4) 100-95 in the Turkish BSL last Saturday. He scored 10 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 7 assists in 37 minutes. Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyesi (6-8) is placed 11th in the BSL. Calloway's stats this year are: 12.1ppg, 4.0rpg, 5.2apg and 1.6spg in 14 games. He is a naturalized American. Calloway used to play for the Bulgarian national team seven years ago.

   #10. Guard Branko Mirkovic (190-82, also represented by 011 Sports, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) was not able to help Oradea (5-6) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Mirkovic's good performance the sixth-placed Oradea (5-6) was badly defeated 79-60 at home by the leading Le Mans in the group B of Basketball Champions League. He was the second best scorer with 13 points. Mirkovic also added 6 assists. There are only three games left until the end of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Mirkovic has averaged so far 9.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 5.1apg. He is a former international player as four years ago he still played for the Bulgarian senior national team.

   #11. Former international power forward Kaloyan Ivanov (205-86, another player represented by BeoBasket, currently plays in Turkey) faced previously mentioned Dejan Ivanov in the Turkish BSL last game. Ivanov was not able to secure a victory for one of league's weakest teams Tofas (6-8) in their last game. Despite his good performance Tofas lost 79-84 in Giresun to the higher-ranked (#8) Yesilgiresun Bld. Ivanov scored 12 points in 40 minutes. Ivanov averaged so far 13.0ppg, 4.9rpg and 3.1apg in 14 games. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team four years ago.

   #12. International center Jason Washburn (210-90, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Utah, currently plays in Japan) was the main contributor in a Yokohama BC's victory against the fourth-ranked Kyoto Hannaryz 74-64 in the Japanese B League last Tuesday. Washburn was the best player in that game. He scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. This season Washburn has very high stats. He averages: 16.9ppg, 8.5rpg and 1.1apg. Washburn is a naturalized American. He is also in the roster of the Bulgarian national team.

   #13. Former international small forward Pavel Marinov (199-88, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Romania) couldn't help Pitesti in their game against UBT Cluj Napoca in the Romanian Liga Nationala, despite his good performance on Saturday night. He scored 11 points and added 4 assists in 32 minutes. But his team lost 82-88. Marinov averaged so far 14.6ppg, 5.5rpg and 4.4apg in 15 games. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team three years ago.

   #14. Former international small forward Atanas Penev (195-85, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help Hertener Loewen in their game against Hagen BG in the German Regionalliga (fourth division). Despite his very good performance in Friday night's game Penev was the second best scorer with 19 points. He also added 5 rebounds. Penev has averaged so far 8.7ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.9apg and 1.6spg. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2001.

   #15. Former international forward Veselin Veselinov (202-83, college: W.Virginia St., currently plays in Switzerland) couldn't help Swiss Central in their game against Starwings in the Swiss LNA, despite his very good performance last Sunday. Veselinov had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 3 assists in 35 minutes. But his team was edged 79-76. Veselinov has very impressive stats this year: 15.5ppg, 7.2rpg, 2.2apg and 1.5spg in 12 games. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team four years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Bulgarian passport but never been selected to any of Bulgarian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Willie Deane (188-PG-80, agency: Higher Vision Sports, college: Purdue, currently plays in Latvia) led Ventspils to a victory against the closely-ranked Jurmala (8-9) 85-77 in the Latvian LBL in Saturday night's game. Deane scored 11 points and added 6 assists. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. BK Ventspils (14-1) is placed first in the LBL. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. The Regular Season already ended. Deane's total stats this season are: 9.8ppg, 1.9rpg, 3.9apg and 1.5spg. He is a naturalized American. Deane used to play for PBC Lukoil Akademik Sophia in Bulgarian league.

   #2. Keydren Clark (180-PG-84, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Greece) could not help Promitheas (4-9) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Clark's very good performance Promitheas was edged 81-79 at home by the lower-ranked Koroivos (#12). He was the second best scorer with 18 points. Clark averaged so far 12.5ppg, 2.5rpg and 2.3apg. He is a naturalized American.

   #3. Boyan Tenev (204-F-88, college: Lincoln Memorial, currently plays in Germany) contributed to Aschersleben's victory against the eighth-ranked Hannover Korbjaeger (3-6) 85-71 in the German Regionalliga (fourth division) on Saturday night. Tenev scored 14 points. BG Aschersleben Tigers (5-4) is placed fourth in North group. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Tenev has averaged so far 8.2ppg and 1.2rpg.

   #4. Juliy Arabadzhiyski (204-F-93, currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Bielefeld (3-5) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance Bielefeld (#7) was badly defeated 87-70 on the road by the second-ranked SG Schwelmer Baskets in the West group. Arabadzhiyski recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds. Arabadzhiyski has averaged so far 7.6ppg and 6.0rpg.

   #5. Georgi Krastev (195-SF-94, currently plays in Germany) managed to help KIT SC Karlsruhe in a victory against the eighth-ranked TV Langen (7-7) 75-65 in the German Regionalliga (fourth division) last Saturday. He scored only 2 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 20 minutes. KIT SC Karlsruhe (9-5) is placed fifth in South-West group. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Krastev has averaged so far 6.4ppg, 3.7rpg and 2.1apg in 14 games he played so far.

   #6. Milen Kostov (185-G-89, currently plays in Germany) contributed to Ibbenbueren's victory against the eighth-ranked Duesseldorf 99-87 in the German Regionalliga (fourth division) on Saturday night. He scored 5 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Kostov has averaged so far 7.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.4apg and 1.4spg.

   #7. Angel Mavrodiev (183-G-91, currently plays in Finland) contributed to a Raholan Pyrkiva's victory against the fifth-ranked Espoo Basket 88-78 in the Finnish 1st Division (second division) on Sunday night. He recorded 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 31 minutes. Mavrodiev averaged so far 12.2ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.7apg and 1.6spg in 13 games.

Defending champion Leones de Santo Domingo (LNB) tabbed 25-year old American forward Travis Daniels (202-98kg-92, college: Mississippi State). He moved there from Balkan in Bulgarian NBL league where he started the season. In 23 games he averaged 11.6ppg and 7.3rpg this season. Daniels helped them to make it to the Bulgarian Cup Semifinals.
