Here is the weekly review of the top performing Croatian players, who play currently abroad.


Petra Stampalija

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international center Petra Stampalija (189-80, agency: Josep and Nicolas, currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in France. She could not help Union Hainaut (5-1) in their last game. Despite Stampalija's very good performance the first-placed Union Hainaut was crushed 79-51 on the road by the second-ranked Vologda-Chevakata in the group B of Eurocup. She was the top scorer with 21 points. Stampalija also added 8 rebounds in 40 minutes on the court. It was his first game for Union Hainaut this season. Stampalija played for the Croatian senior national team three years ago.

Sonja Kireta

   #2. Second place goes to former international center Sonja Kireta (198-76, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian A1. She was not able to help Parma (8-3) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Kireta's good performance Parma was crushed 84-62 in Schio by the leading Familia. She recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 12 rebounds. It's Kireta's first season with the team. Kireta is ranked eighth on the list of the top scorers in the league. She has very reliable stats this season: 14.4ppg, 8.7rpg, 2FGP: 48.0% and FT: 61.3%. Kireta played for the Croatian national team in 2007.

Marija Rezan

   #3. The Croatian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Marija Rezan (198-89, currently plays in Spain). She contributed to a Perfumerias Avenida's victory against the league leader Rivas Ecopolis (11-1) 74-63 in the Spanish LFB in Sunday night's game. Rezan recorded 8 points. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Perfumerias Avenida Salamanca (9-2) is placed second in the LFB. It was her team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. This season Rezan averages: 6.3ppg, 2.0rpg, 2FGP: 57.1%. She is also a member of the Croatian senior national team.

   #4. Swingman Ana Lelas (183-83, currently plays in France) helped Lattes Montpellier win their game against the 11th-ranked Villeneuve D'Ascq (6-11) 79-62 in the French LFB last Sunday. Lelas scored 6 points in 19 minutes. Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration Basket (15-2) is placed first in the LFB. This year Lelas' overall stats are: 9.4ppg, 4.2rpg and 1.8apg in the 17 games she played so far. She is also Croatian national team player.

International swingman Jelena Ivezic (182-84, currently plays in Turkey), who plays in the Turkish TKBL was not able to secure a victory for one of league's weakest teams Ceyhan Bld (7-7) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Ivezic's good performance Ceyhan Bld was defeated 77-62 at home by the higher-ranked Galatasaray (#5). She was the second best scorer with 14 points. Ivezic has relatively good stats this season: 13.5ppg, 3.9rpg, 1.9apg and 1.5spg. She plays currently for the Croatian national team.

   #6. Power forward Lisa Karcic (185-86, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Villanova, currently plays in Spain) helped Hondarribia-Irun win their game against the fourth-ranked Caja Rural (6-6) 75-70 in the Spanish LFB in Saturday night's game. Karcic recorded 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 37 minutes. Hondarribia-Irun (5-7) is placed eighth in the LFB. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. Karcic is ranked fourth on the list of the most steals in the league with 2.3spg. She also averaged so far 7.5ppg, 5.1rpg and 1.3apg in the 12 games. Karcic is a naturalized American. She is an international player who is currently on the senior Croatian National Team roster. Strangely Karcic has never played in Croatia.

   #7. Former international center Emilija Podrug (190-79, currently plays in France) helped Lyon win their game against the closely-ranked Nantes Reze (9-8) 75-57 in the French LFB last Sunday. She scored 6 points. Union Lyon Basket Feminin (11-6) is placed fourth in the LFB. Podrug's total stats this season are: 8.3ppg, 4.2rpg and 2.4apg. She used to play for the Croatian national team three years ago.

   #8. Point guard Iva Ciglar (168-85, agency: Data Plus Group, currently plays in France) couldn't help Perpignan (11-5) in their game against Tarbes (9-8) in the French LFB. Ciglar cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. She scored only 2 points and added 5 assists in 19 minutes. Perpignan lost 73-78 on their home court in Perpignan to the lower-ranked (#6) Tarbes. It was Perpignan's first loss after three consecutive victories. Ciglar is currently fifth on the league's list of best passers with 4.3apg. This year her other stats are: 6.3ppg and 2.9rpg in the 16 games. Ciglar plays currently for the Croatian national team.

   #9. Former U16 international center Dina Sesnic (188-87, currently plays in Adriatic League) helped her Serbian team Vojvodina win their game against the closely-ranked Celik (9-6) 81-67 in the Adriatic League on Friday night. She scored 10 points. Vojvodina Nis Novi Sad (10-6) is placed fourth in group T. There are only two games left until the end of the Adriatic League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Sesnic's total stats this season are: 8.5ppg, 4.7rpg and 1.2spg. She used to play for the Croatian U16 national team ten years ago.

   #10. Guard Tomica Bacic (182-87, college: Iona, currently plays in Ireland) was the major contributor in a TM Hotel Cork's victory against the sixth-ranked Singleton (4-6) crushing them 91-61 in a derby game in the Irish Superleague in Sunday night's game. Bacic had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 13 rebounds in 36 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only her third season in pro basketball. Team Montenotte Hotel Cork (10-1) is placed second in the Superleague. It was her team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. Bacic has individually a very good year with high stats. She averages: 23.3ppg and 11.3rpg in the three games. Bacic is a former U16 international player as ten years ago she still played for the Croatian national team.


The list of other players, who all have Croatian passport but never been selected to any of Croatian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Suzy Batkovic-Brown (195-C-80, currently plays in Australia) was the major contributor in an Adelaide Lightning's victory against the closely-ranked Logan Thunder (7-12) crushing them 97-61 in the Australian WNBL on Friday night. She scored 18 points, had 7 rebounds, passed 4 assists and added 4 blocks in 21 minutes. Adelaide Link Lightning (13-6) is placed third in the WNBL. Batkovic-Brown has individually a very good year with high stats. She averages: 20.9ppg, 9.8rpg, 1.9apg, 2.9bpg and 1.5spg in the 14 games she played so far. Batkovic-Brown has a dual citizenship: Croatian and Australian.

   #2. Jelena Radic (190-C-87, currently plays in Adriatic League), who plays in Serbia could not help Radivoj Korac (10-4) in their last game on Friday. Despite her good performance Radivoj Korac (#3) was crushed 88-53 in a derby game by the leading Partizan in the group T of Adriatic League. Radic was the second best scorer with 12 points. She also added 4 rebounds. Radic's total stats this season are: 6.7ppg, 3.8rpg and 1.2apg.

   #3. Neda Djuric (172-PG-80, agency: Merit Sports, college: Rhode Island, currently plays in Adriatic League) contributed to Vojvodina's victory against the closely-ranked Celik (9-6) 81-67 in the Adriatic League last Friday. She scored 8 points and had 4 steals in 18 minutes. Vojvodina Nis Novi Sad (10-6) is placed fourth in group T. There are only two games left until the end of the Adriatic League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Djuric's total stats are: 6.3ppg, 2.3rpg, 1.3apg and 3.3spg in the three games.

   #4. Tatjana Pavlovic (183-PF-90, currently plays in Switzerland) was not able to help Highflyers (1-14) in their game against Ovronnaz-Martigny Basket (10-5) in the Swiss LNA. Despite her very good performance last Saturday She was the second best scorer with 14 points. Pavlovic also added 5 rebounds. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Pavlovic's total stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 4.6rpg and 1.5apg. She is another player who holds two passports: Croatian and Swiss.

Marija Rados (180-C-93) sank a game-winning 3-pointer with 20 second left as Medvescak retained their Croatian Cup Ruzica Meglaj Rimac crown with a 73-71 win over Tresnjevka 2009. Iva Borovic (170-G-88) scored 16 of her 19 points before the halftime, Patricija Bura (188-C-96) had 17 points and 15 rebounds, Anja Majstorovic (184-SF-94) added 15 points and Matea Tadic (167-PG-99) 12. Back-to-back Croatian Cup Ruzica Meglaj-Rimac champion Medvescak will face in their third straigh finals city rival Tresnjevka 2009. Tresnjevka 2009-Pula Crnja Tours 79-61: Tresnjevka trailed just at 5-6 and took control of the game behind a 14-0 run spanning halftime for a 42-28 lead.
