We bring you last week's top performances from Croatians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

Ana Lelas

   #1. This week's number one is an international swingman Ana Lelas (183-83, currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in France. She could not help Lattes Montpellier (5-1) in their last game. Despite Lelas' very good performance the first-placed Lattes Montpellier was edged 86-84 on the road by the leading Dynamo Moscow in the group A of Eurocup. She was the top scorer with 19 points. Lelas also added 5 rebounds in 27 minutes on the court. Lelas has relatively good stats this year: 12.1ppg, 4.4rpg, 2.5apg, 2FGP: 46.0%, 3FGP: 43.2% and FT: 93.8%(15-16) in the 10 games she played so far. She is currently a member of the Croatian senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international center Sonja Kireta (198-76, currently plays in Italy). Kireta led Parma to a victory over one of league's weakest teams Cagliari CUS (1-11) 77-60 in the Italian A1 last Sunday. She was MVP of the game. Kireta recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 11 rebounds. Lavezzini Parma (9-3) is placed fourth in the A1. Kireta is currently eighth on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (sixth place). She has very reliable stats this season: 14.8ppg, 8.9rpg, 2FGP: 49.2% and FT: 65.8%. Kireta played for the Croatian national team in 2007.

Marija Rezan

   #3. The Croatian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Marija Rezan (198-89, currently plays in Spain). She contributed to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Caja Rural (6-7) crushing them 76-53 in the Spanish LFB in Saturday night's game. Rezan scored 9 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Perfumerias Avenida Salamanca (10-2) is placed second in the LFB. It was her team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. It's Rezan's first season with the team. This year she averages: 7.0ppg, 3.8rpg, 2FGP: 54.5% and FT: 57.1%. Rezan is also a member of the Croatian senior national team.

   #4. Power forward Lisa Karcic (185-86, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Villanova, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish LFB was not able to help Hondarribia-Irun (5-8) in their last game. Despite her very good performance Hondarribia-Irun was edged 81-80 in Huelva by the one of league's weakest teams (#10) Conquero. Karcic was the top scorer with 22 points. She also added 4 rebounds in 37 minutes. Karcic belongs to league's most steals and is ranked #2 with 2.2spg. This year she also averages: 8.6ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.3apg in the 13 games. Karcic is a naturalized American. She is also Croatian national team player. Strangely Karcic has never played in Croatia.

   #5. Former international center Petra Stampalija (189-80, agency: Josep and Nicolas, currently plays in Eurocup) was not able to secure a victory for Union Hainaut (5-1) in their game against Vologda-Chevakata (5-1) in the Eurocup. She scored 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Union Hainaut was crushed 66-45 at home by the second-ranked Vologda-Chevakata in the group B of Eurocup. This season Stampalija has relatively solid stats: 13.5ppg, 7.5rpg and 3.0spg. She used to play for the Croatian national team three years ago.

   #6. Center Dina Sesnic (188-87, currently plays in Adriatic League) contributed to a 1-point Vojvodina's victory against the tenth-ranked ZKK Vrsac (3-11) 103-102 in the Adriatic League in Saturday night's game. Sesnic scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 40 minutes. Vojvodina Nis Novi Sad (11-6) is placed fourth in group T. It was her team's third consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Adriatic League Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This year Sesnic's overall stats are: 9.1ppg, 4.8rpg and 1.1spg in the 16 games. She is a former U16 international player as she played for the Croatian team ten years ago.

   #7. International swingman Jelena Ivezic (182-84, currently plays in Turkey), who plays in the Turkish TKBL couldn't help Ceyhan Bld (7-8) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Ivezic's good performance Ceyhan Bld was defeated 92-77 in Istanbul by the one of league's weakest teams Besiktas (#13). She scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Ivezic has reliable stats this season: 13.3ppg, 4.1rpg, 1.8apg and 1.6spg. She is also Croatian national team player.

The list of other players, who all have Croatian passport but never been selected to any of Croatian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Suzy Batkovic-Brown (195-C-80, currently plays in Australia) led Adelaide Lightning to a victory over the closely-ranked Dandenong Rangers (16-4) 87-75 in the Australian WNBL on Friday night. She was the best player in that game. Batkovic-Brown had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 10 rebounds. She also added and 3 steals in 31 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Adelaide Link Lightning (14-6) is placed third in the WNBL. It was her team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Batkovic-Brown has individually a very good year with high stats. She averages: 21.0ppg, 9.8rpg, 1.9apg, 2.7bpg and 1.6spg in the 15 games she played so far. Batkovic-Brown has a dual citizenship: Croatian and Australian.

   #2. Jelena Radic (190-C-87, currently plays in Adriatic League) contributed to a Radivoj Korac's victory against the sixth-ranked Mladi Krajisnik (8-8) 72-67 in the Adriatic League on Saturday night. Radic scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. Radivoj Korac Beograd (11-4) is placed third in group T. There are only four games left until the end of the Adriatic League Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Radic's total stats are: 7.1ppg, 4.1rpg and 1.1apg in the 14 games.

   #3. Tatjana Pavlovic (183-PF-90, currently plays in Switzerland), who plays in the Swiss LNA could not help Highflyers (1-15) to beat Pully (7-9). She recorded 5 points. The bottom-ranked Highflyers were defeated 70-55 at home by the higher-ranked Pully (#6). It was Highflyers' 14th consecutive loss in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Pavlovic's total stats this season are: 8.6ppg, 4.4rpg and 1.4apg. She is another player who holds two passports: Croatian and Swiss.

A1 is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 11 rounds left. An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Zagreb. Second ranked Tresnjevka faced 3rd placed KK Zadar. Host Tresnjevka (9-1) smashed guests from Zadar (7-3) 79-58. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of KK Zadar. The game was mostly controlled by Tresnjevka. KK Zadar managed to win third quarter 18-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. T...   [read more]
