A1 Round 14: Gospic beats ZKK Medvescak in the most crucial game of the week - Feb 2, 2013

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Gospic. First ranked Gospic faced 4th ranked ZKK Medvescak. Host Gospic (13-1) smashed guests from Zagreb (10-4) 81-57. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of ZKK Medvescak. The game without a history. Gospic led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Strangely ZKK Medvescak outrebounded Gospic 38-24 including 18 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was international Emanuela Salopek (178-87) who scored 20 points. Guard Monika Bosilj (178-85, college: FIU) chipped in 21 points. International center Ivana Tikvic (189-94) produced 13 points and 6 rebounds for the guests. ZKK Medvescak's coach gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Gospic have an impressive 12-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 13-1 record, which they share with Novi Zagreb. ZKK Medvescak at the other side keeps the fourth place with four games lost. Gospic is looking forward to face Tresnjevka (#6) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. ZKK Medvescak will play against the league's second-placed Lupa Promotion in Novi Zagreb and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked ZKK Agram (0-14) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 64-54 loss to eleventh ranked Ragusa (4-10) in Zagreb. The former international power forward Ivona Matic (188-86) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Sanda Tosic contributed with 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. The former international guard Branka Vukicevic (173-82) replied with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for ZKK Agram. Newly promoted Ragusa maintains eleventh position with 4-10 record. ZKK Agram at the other side still closes the standings with 14 games lost. Ragusa will play against higher ranked Jolly (#3) in Sibenik in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. ZKK Agram will play at home against ZKK Split (#5) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Split supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Lupa Promotion (13-1) played at the court of 5th ranked ZKK Split (6-8). Lupa Promotion smashed ZKK Split 123-56 on Saturday. Latoya Williams scored 32 points and 5 rebounds (on 15-of-16 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners. Dora Goles responded with 12 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Lupa Promotion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Gospic. Loser ZKK Split keeps the fifth place with eight games lost. They share the position with Zadar and Tresnjevka. Lupa Promotion will meet ZKK Medvescak (#4) in the next round. ZKK Split will play against ZKK Agram in Zagreb and hope to secure a win.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Pleternica, where higher ranked Tresnjevka (6-8) lost to tenth ranked Pleter (5-9) in a road game 70-79. Martina Gambiraza notched 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the effort. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Pleter moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Rockwool Pula. Tresnjevka lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the fifth position with eight games lost. Pleter's next round opponent will be Studenac Omis (#10) on the road. Tresnjevka will play against the league's leader Gospic (#1) and will have a slim chance for a victory.

In the last two games of round 14 Zadar was crushed by Jolly in Sibenik 90-63. Rockwool Pula beat Studenec Omis at home 76-67.
The best stats of 14th round was 30 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists by Luca Ivankovic of Jolly.


Agram ZG - Ragusa 54-64

Bottom-ranked ZKK Agram (0-14) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 64-54 loss to eleventh ranked Ragusa (4-10) in Zagreb. It looked good early as ZKK Agram took an 1-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Ragusa had a 18-13 second period charge getting the lead and ZKK Agram was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 54-64. They outrebounded ZKK Agram 44-32 including 31 on the defensive glass. The former international power forward Ivona Matic (188-86) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Swingman Sanda Tosic (176-86) contributed with 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. The former international guard Branka Vukicevic (173-82) replied with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists and Dana Saric (174-95) added 8 points and 8 rebounds in the effort for ZKK Agram. Newly promoted Ragusa maintains eleventh position with 4-10 record. ZKK Agram at the other side still closes the standings with 14 games lost. Ragusa will play against higher ranked Jolly (#3) in Sibenik in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. ZKK Agram will play at home against ZKK Split (#5) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Jolly - Zadar 90-63

There was no surprise in Sibenik where 7th ranked KK Zadar (6-8) was crushed by third ranked Jolly (11-2) 90-63. The game was mostly controlled by Jolly. KK Zadar was better in fourth quarter 15-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 19-of-25 charity shots (76.0 percent) during the game. Jolly outrebounded KK Zadar 47-29 including a 32-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. The former international center Luca Ivankovic (207-87) notched a double-double by scoring 30 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort and international forward Antonija Misura (178-88, agency: 1x1 Sports) supported her with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 12 assists. Even 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals by forward Lara Nikpalj (180-89) did not help to save the game for KK Zadar. Forward Antonia Erslan (180-88) added 16 points and 4 assists for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Jolly have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 11-2 record having just three points less than leader Gospic. KK Zadar at the other side dropped to the fifth place with eight games lost. Jolly's next round opponent will be Ragusa (#11) in Dubrovnik and are hoping to win another game. KK Zadar will play at home against Rockwool Pula (#8).

Rockwool Pula - Studenec Omis 76-67

We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams when ninth ranked Rockwool Pula (5-9) defeated at home 8th ranked Studenac Omis (4-9) 76-67. The hosts were already 14 points ahead after 3 quarters before a 27-22 Studenac Omis' run in the last quarter cut the lead to 76-67 at the end of the game. They outrebounded Studenac Omis 45-31 including 30 on the defensive glass. 25 personal fouls committed by Studenac Omis helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Center Maja Ramljak (185-88) notched a double-double by scoring 22 points and 17 rebounds to lead the effort and center Martina Zubak (191-83) supported her with 15 points and 18 rebounds. Even 24 points and 5 rebounds by Maja Jercic (184-83) did not help to save the game for Studenac Omis. Forward Milena Dincic (174-84) added 10 points and 9 rebounds for the guests. Five Rockwool Pula and four Studenac Omis players scored in double figures. Rockwool Pula moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Pleter. Studenac Omis at the other side dropped to the tenth position with nine games lost. Rockwool Pula's next round opponent will be higher ranked KK Zadar (#7) on the road and it may be quite challenging game. Studenac Omis will play against Pleter in Pleternica and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

We should mention about the upset which took place in Pleternica, where higher ranked Tresnjevka (6-8) lost to tenth ranked Pleter (5-9) in a road game 70-79. 21-year old forward Lea Miletic (183-F-95) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Pula C.Tours and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 8. She had a double-double of 26 points and 20 rebounds, while her team crushed, the league's bottom-ranked team Brod na Savi (#11, 0-7) with 22-point margin 93-71. The game had a very big importance for second-ranked ZKK Medvescak as it allowed them to take a leadership position. ZKK Medvescak smashed 7th ranked Podravac in Zagreb 99-43. The game was mostly controlled by ZKK Medvescak. Podravac managed to win fourth quarter 14-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening.
