Interview with Coach Ivan Rudez - Apr 29, 2015

Ivan Rudez
Ivan Rudez Head Coach in Lions de Geneve (Switzerland-LNA) gave an interview:

What would you try to teach your players besides basketball? How would you do that?

Besides basketball I am trying to teach them to expend their of the court vision and awareness in life. In that way they might improve they're on the court decesion making. Sometimes effort as well.Life is not about empty reality shows , I-pads and facebook posts etc...There is different reality out there . There are no shortcuts to success. I talk to them individualy. And collectively too . Sometimes i recomend a book or a movie that could direct their taughts in a way.

Who are your role models in coaching and why?

First I must say that have a lot respect for coaches who work with young players, like my first mentor Coach Jenkac who always coached youth categories . Real basketball teachers - dedicated 100 %, but never been into spotlight or see a big bank account. But they inject kids with fundamentals and commitment . I have great respect for Coach Bobby Knight and his philosophy .From active pro and top level coaches in Europe - i love watching teams that are coached by Plaza , Obradovic, Laso, in NBA Coach Popovich, Thibadeau..List is long.

How do you plan on improving as a coach from year to year?

I feel its a mistake when people say that Coaches always improve with age. You can get extra experience -yes, but real key to improving is willingness to improve, not the clock. Also dedication to your job and couriosity to experiment with new practice programs, new drills. Or testing your programs and philosophy on new teams. New mentalities.

How coaching affecting your life?

Real question is how life affects your coaching ?. Coaching is my "1st life," is my everyday job/obsession/hobby all in one. And then i try to blend life into it, and life is my family. My wife sometimes jokes that she is my second wife, 1st one was basketball. But if you re asking about my free-time plan - its definately booked my kids.

How do you deal with players about discipline issues either major or minor?

Anticipation is important, you can't wait the problems to happen and then deal with it. Important is to select right personalities to work with. Then first week of prep period we set the ground rules . And Team rules are same for all. And we all have to respect it. If the problem occurs, depends on a breach - first i will look it from all the angles and make a decesion what is the best for a team. One thing is sure -all players regardles if young /old or superstars /role player will be sanctioned the same way for same act of undiscipline. Very serious problems are defined in contract between Club and Player anyway.

Describe your typical pre game, half time and post-game locker room routine plus explain the thinking behind it.

Typicall pre game locker room - starts with repeating 3 most important defensive informations, and after depends on the opponent/which game/playoff game /final game...If i see that players are too relaxed then I will create some tension. But if I see that there is an extra pressure and tension around (press/fans etc..)then i will try to take some off the and direct thier focus to good ecxecution of details.
Half time- also depends on what we need as a team in that moment. Usualy correction / adaptation of ofensive or defensive detail is needed.
End game speech depends how we played that day. It depends of the phase of the season as well, for example in prep-period after game meetings are bit longer and more detailed then during season. Mostly ends with few words about the week ahead of us.

How do you plan on motivating players and getting them to buy in to their role on the team each year?

I coach proffesional basketball players last 8yrs, not juniors, so when it comes to motivating them to play - really comes down to one thing-they have to be self-motivated first; I usualy tell them : if you need me to motivate you to play basketball then you need to change job. Biting into role is different, but also important, i really try to have a role for each player that particapates in training process. But more important is that players understand and accepts his role, and to work in furfilling his tasks . But we got to come back to anticipation again cause as coach you have to know what type of personalities you hire, and what profile of basketeball players you are bringing together, so the roles i have for them are alredy clear in your mind before prep-period starts. Accepting could be harder part... all people on the end wants to feel usefull and important in some way. Players are not different.

What are your coaching goals? Where do you hope to be in the following years?

I can say that first my current goal is to help my Club to be the best that it can be . Eventhough we have won all possible trophies in Switzerland we still try to improve in what we do. If I look in the long run i definately would try to work in Top leagues of world , thats NBA and Euroleague.

Describe the top five priorities in your life in rank order and explain why.

1. Family safety - i am father so my family safety and security comes first as well as my parents and younger brother.
2. Basketball - to work on your teams performance every day.
3. Developing players - I can't sleep well If I know that my players aren't improving for at least 1% during a season.
4. Friends - respecting the friendship, specialy long time relations
5. Try to find a time in every week to learn sometnig new, doesn't have to be much , like read a part of a book or learn new word in English, French or Italian.

What one word or phrase do you want people to associate with your name?

That's a tough one. I am who I am , I can't guess how others see me. I' m sure that not all people will see you in same way, so it could be a lot of different words or phrases accually.
