Six A1 teams withdrew from the league due to financial problems - Oct 6, 2011

There is a very unique situation in Cypriot Women League. It's a tradition that the league starts a little later than other leagues and that's why their schedule is also announced just before the season starts. But it was a 'special' year with the schedule missing 5 teams including even the champion AEK Larnaca. The other four teams which decided to 'take at least one year break' are Etha Engomis, ENAD Agiou Dhometiou, APOEL Nicosia, Anagennisis Germasogias and Apollon.
It was not a secret that the clubs had financial problems. Cyprus similarly like Greece has some serious economic challenges and it effects also sport. But cutting the number of teams by almost half is a very unique. Plus a term 'at least one year break' does not necessarily mean that we can see them back next season. The league this year will have just 7 teams, while 4 of them were brought from A2 just to make up for the teams which withdrew. The league with just 3 teams left from last season will be actually a fraction what Cyprus can offer about their women basketball. But let's stay tuned. It's still the top women league in Cyprus and it may be still not a 'lost season'. Plus all these 6 teams, which withdrew from the top league will still keep youth teams playing in cadet and junior leagues.
Maybe they should add a team or two from Northern Cyprus to balance it up as Turkey is not in so deep financial disaster (sorry all Greek friends, it was just a joke...).

O'Brien's double-double lands him Player of the Week award - 18 hours ago
27-year old forward Jake O'Brien (206-F-89, agency: HMS) had an amazing evening in the last round for league's best team Keravnos and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 11. He had a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds, while his team crushed Etha (#6, 2-9) with 25-point margin 92-67. It allowed Keravnos to consolidate first place in the Cypriot league. Keravnos has a very good season and are considered to have a run for the championship title. They improve...   [read more]

Division A Round 11: Apoel defeats Enosis in the game between Top 4 teams - 1 day ago
An interesting game for Apoel (6-5) which hosted in Nicosia 4th placed Enosis (4-7). Third ranked Apoel managed to get a 5-point victory 78-73. Enosis was tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Canadian Murphy Burnatowski (200-90, college: Colgate) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds. American guard Tre Bussey (190-91, college: Georgia South) contributed with 22 points and 4 assists for...   [read more]
