First round in the 2012 was played last weekend. Nothing has changed as AEL Limassol extended its winning streak to eight. They blasted APOP 65-38 and of course kept the first place in the standings with 8-0 record. At the same time APOP dropped to 3-6. In the other games, the University of Cyprus cruised past Akademia 31-104 for 6-2 record. That is currently enough for third place. Akademia stays the only winless team in the league. Keravnos celebrated 68-40 home victory against Olympos jumping to 8-1 record. Olympos dropped to fourth place now with 4-5 score. Round 11 of the Cypriot top division is scheduled for the next weekend.
About the final game of Panathinaikos now, which showed its mood from the last season (was knocked off in the finals by Athinaikos) top scorer int he tonight's succesfull game was the american MVP of the league Panathinaikos AthensDiana Delva (188-F/C-88, college: Hartford) who ended the game with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 2 block shots followed by the veteran Greek international Kaletzou who finished the game with 17 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. On behalf of Elliniko who performed great (especially in the second half of the competition) top scorer was Evina Stamati (181-F-84) with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists, followed by Anthoula Balta (177-G-87) and Tania Chalivera (178-G-85) with 9 points each.
In regards to the game now, the team of Elliniko was much better for the most of the game as the players of Coach Eleni Kapogianni tried to surprice the players of Coach Samadoura with their strong defence and their solid game, so the home team of Panathinaikos Athens was not able to score at all and finshed the first period with just 8 points while Elliniko scored 14.
The second period was a bit better for Panathinaikos Athens as Coach Giasemi Samandoura saw Elena Vlani (174-G-86) and Anastasia Slouka (182-SG-93) performing very good and together with the solid game of Dimitra Kalentzou (174-G-78) and Diana Delva, the Greens cut the deficit to 23-28 by the end of the first half.
In the third period though, Evina Stamati was unstoppable and together with Tania Chalivera and with Maria Roza Boni (179-G-86) being the dominant in the paint increase their deficit to 40-47 by the end of the third period.
Everybody in the court thought that Elliniko was redy to surprise the domination of the regular season of Panathinaikos Athens as the momentum was clearly pro Elliniko but Panathinaikos Athens, Diana Delva and Dimitra Kalentzou had a different oppinion and they didn't want to spoil waht they build up with a lot of pain and sweat in the regular season so with an amazing fourht period where they over scored their opponents with 27-14, they succeed to reach their third victory over the team of Coach Eleni Kapogianni and finally win their fourh title.
