Cyprus NT's sixth straight loss proves a lot.... (part 1) - Sep 2, 2012

E-mail Kasia:
Kasia's Articles

Anthony King
After six straight losses the Cyprus National Team is basically proving what the eurobasket authors claiming the last 5-6 years about the Basketball development in the island, there is no improvement at all!

Cyprus suffered five holocausts and a loss at the OT by the Austrian NT in the opener of this disastrous tournament. A tournament which takes the Cyprus NT some years back, as the total point difference of -166 (336 -502) in just six games proves so.

There are many questions that are truly arising from these results and the particular statistics of the National team, some of them quite crucial and some others not so, but do have their "special weight" .

From these six games though it does show to the respected audience that the National Team even though started this season with many dreams and many official statements with a coaching team which outnumbers the previous seasons, and with a great achievement being the naturalization of the American power forward Anthony King (206-F/C-85, agency: Interperformances, college: Miami, FL) who became a martyr as a member of this NT, that finally and with all these new players in the roster of the Cyprus NT, the team once more played in these six games with actually five players since all the rest parts of the roster seems to have "special roles".

One may wonder what would have been the result and the picture of the NT without King?? Who knows probably even worst if we count the fact that the Maerican PF was averaging 15 points and 9 rebounds per game...
In the six games the NT players who spent their time in the court were the following: Anthony King 198 minutes, Trisokkas 159, Razis 182, Sizopoulos 165, Liatsos 153 from all the rest if I deduct Kaskiris with his 76 minutes all the rest played less than an hour in all six games with the younger Iliadis, Aristotelous, Georgiou and Loizides being in the court some minutes only.

I do not really judge anyone but could it be the case (especially in the heavy losses suffered by Croatia) that some of these players, "the others" to play a bit more and to get some real time in the court?

Furthermore, there are obviously some players which could easily help the NT in this particular stage and they were either not called at all from the Federation and the Coaching team or simply called but never played as they could, i.e. Koronides, Palalas, Panteli, Kounas (over here there is the unbelievable excuse of his documentation), Nikolas Stylianou (who will play for an A1 team this season), Prodromos Nikolaidis (who will play for an A1 team in the Italian league this season), Pantouris and probably many other players..

Of course the coaching team and the federation knows better but it seems through the results with not so great basketball powerhouses such as Austria, Hungary and even Ukraine at some point since the home loss of 21 is not really a big achievement, that we may have some problems which are not born today, is been a number of years which the Cyprus Basketball is suffering and the responsible are not doing really some serious and organized steps rather than spasmodic moves and decisions..

My criticism has one and only scope to get things better for the Cyprus Basketball since I do care, and since I do not represent anybody or anything be assured that I will keep doing that until some major things finally do change

P.S. In my last criticism (like a couple of years ago) I received an anonymous letter from an email came from the federation simply saying about my attitude and how wrong I am in my criticism whereas the Federation and the players do their best for the sake of the Cyprus Basketball, I want to say that Im with them 100% with the only difference that I always use my name, whatever the case is.....
