The last game of the third week for the first division's league was the most exciting from all aspects since the visiting site of Coach Yiannaras, Keravnos Strovolou needed the overtime to finally succeed a crucial win in Limassol against Pizza Express Limassol with the score finally remaining to the 88-91 since the last three pointer by Apollon, missed the final shot and the Limassol team remain winless after these first three weeks.
The game was a derby from the beginning and the home team took initially a lead of 6 points (12-6) in the first five minutes, with Noel scoring the 8 points on behalf of Apollon. Keravnos started the game with low percentages from the arc while Noel found some assistance from Jefferson and the score became 20-14 at the end of the first period, with Apollon keeping the lead mainly due to Noel's great first period's performance.

At the beginning of the second period Apollon increased its pressure on the visiting site and right after the first four minutes the team of Apollon took a serious lead of 15 points, 35-20 with Jefferson reaching the 10 points and the players of Keravnos couldn't react as nearly all the Strovolos players were on a bad shape with many false balls and many missing shots. Bobby Maze (191-PG-86, college: Tennessee)'s awaking at that particular moment gave a small breath to his team and the score 50 seconds before the end of the first half, became 37-35 and the derby started allover since Keravnos reaction (with Bobby Maze's 13 points) was instant and that was crucial for the Strovolos team. The end of the first half found the home team to lead by 4 points (39-35).

The third period and only three minutes after the beginning, Keravnos with Tony Crocker (201-G/F-87, college: Oklahoma) on the leading role cut the deficit to the basket (44-42). From that part and on the game became a total derby with both the teams stepping hand to hand with Keravnos taking the lead and leading from 1 to 6 points, with Tony Crocker and Lawrence Kinnard (202-F-86, college: UAB) leading the way. The end of the third period found the visiting site to lead with 56-63 and changing not only the momentum but also the winning psychology.

The 4th period found the two teams not being able to score for more than 3 minutes, with Jason Detrick (195-SF-80, college: Oklahoma) and Diego Kapelan (190-G-87, college: McNeese St.) cut the deficit to just a basket (61-63), 6.39' before the end of the game. In the next three minutes though, Tony Crocker and Lawrence Kinnard gave a new lead to their team with 64-71. Diego Kapelan's three pointers and Dorsey's awaking were the two main reasons of Apollon's absolute draw 82-82 as Demertzis missed the last three pointer of the regular time.

In the overtime Tony Crocker, Julian Vaughn (205-C/F-88, college: Georgetown) and Lawrence Kinnard took over and at the end the visiting team succeeded a great road win since the last shot by Brandon missed its target.

Top scorers:
Apollon: Jason Detrick 19, Brandon Brown (201-F-85, college: CS San Bernar.) 16 and 5 rebounds, Diego Kapelan 15, Dorsey 11 points and 8 assists, Jefferson 10 points and 9 rebounds
Keravnos: Lawrence Kinnard 25 points and 15 rebounds, Tony Crocker 23 points and 7 rebounds, Bobby Maze 21 points and 6 assists, Julian Vaughn 16 points and 12 rebounds
Something quite crucial was the difference in the rebounding area as Keravnos dashed down 51 rebounds vs the 28 rebounds of Apollon.

Keravnos is the champion after many attempts... - 19 days ago
Ten years after the last championship, Keravnos Strovolou finally and after a great 'fight' against the last season's champions (and top favourite team according to available budget) AEK Larnakas, won the final series with 3-1 and won totally fair the sixth championship trophy with the last one being back in 2008. After quite many times being very close to the trophy but losing it at the very last minute, Keravnos management decided to trust in the head coaching position (after many-many...   [read more]

Importance of Statistics - 20 days ago
Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data. Even though it cannot and should not constitute an objective measurement of the performance of a player, statistics provide tools for prediction and forecasting using data and statistical models. Statistics is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, including natural and social sciences, government, and business but also in basketball. Statistical consultants are available to pro...   [read more]
