Division A Round 8: Keravnos beat AEL Limassol by three after a very close game - Jan 4, 2016

The most exciting game of round 8 in the Division A took place in Limassol. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of second-ranked AEL Limassol (5-2) to top-ranked Keravnos (7-0) 55-52 in the game for the first place. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of AEL Limassol. AEL Limassol was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 14-10 charge of Keravnos, which allowed them to win the game. Undefeated Keravnos have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 7-0 record. Defending champion AEL Limassol keeps the second place with two games lost. Keravnos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Nicosia ENAD.
Important game to mention about took place in Larnaca. Fourth ranked APOP Paphou (4-3) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging bottom-ranked AEK (0-7) 61-58 on Sunday evening. APOP Paphou maintains fourth position with 4-3 record. AEK at the other side still closes the standings with seven games lost. APOP Paphou will play against league's second-placed AEL Limassol at home in the next round and it may be the game of the week. AEK will have a break next round.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Nicosia: APOEL (#5) and ENAD (#6). ENAD was defeated at home 43-52 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. APOEL maintains fifth position with 3-4 record. Loser ENAD keeps the sixth place with six games lost. APOEL will meet at home higher ranked Apollon (#3) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. ENAD's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Nicosia to the arena Keravnos.

ENAD - APOEL 43-52

Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Nicosia: APOEL (#5) and ENAD (#6). ENAD was defeated at home 43-52 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. ENAD was trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 13-3 charge of APOEL, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated on the defensive end, holding ENAD to just 3 points in fourth quarter. APOEL maintains fifth position with 3-4 record. Loser ENAD keeps the sixth place with six games lost. APOEL will meet at home higher ranked Apollon (#3) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. ENAD's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Nicosia to the arena Keravnos.

AEK - APOP Paphou 58-61

Important game to mention about took place in Larnaca. Fourth ranked APOP Paphou (4-3) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging bottom-ranked AEK (0-7) 61-58 on Sunday evening. It looked good early as AEK took a 4-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then APOP Paphou had a 21-13 second period charge getting the lead and AEK was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 58-61. APOP Paphou maintains fourth position with 4-3 record. AEK at the other side still closes the standings with seven games lost. APOP Paphou will play against league's second-placed AEL Limassol at home in the next round and it may be the game of the week. AEK will have a break next round.

GS Kronos Agiou Dimitriou (A2) signed experienced 34-year old Cypriot guard Eleana Pantazi (177-83). It is actually her comeback to Kronos as she has played here before. Pantazi will still stay in Greece where she played last season at PAOK Thessalonikis in the A1. In 21 games she had 4.3ppg and 1.1rpg. Keravnos Strovolou (Division A) landed 31-year old Greek international guard Niki Avery (168-86, college: E.Kentucky, agency: Interperformances). She has a double citizenship as she also holds American passport. Avery played most recently at Panathinaikos in Greek A1 league.
