After finishing a disappointing 12th place (6-18) in the basic stage of Mattoni NBL play, BK Breda & Weinstein Opava has moved to strengthen its team (rather than dismantle it) with the addition of two potentially key components. The first addition is American guard Phil Martin (193-G, college: Cal-Riverside), a rookie out of UC-Riverside (NCAA). The 6-4 Martin, a Staten Island, New York native, joined the Iowa Energy in the off-season but did not appear in any games thus far this season. Last season as a Highlander he led the team in scoring (17.5 points) and rebounds (5.6) while handing out 1.0 assists and shooting 45.0% from the field, 35.1% from three and 80.5% from the free-throw line on his way to being named to the All-Big West 1st Team. Possessing a strong dribble and ability to drive to the basket, Martin is more suited to playing shooting guard but can run the offense on occasion if needed. The second addition is a familiar name to Opava fans, as the club has returned 7-1 center Radim Kramny (215-C-85) who is recently departed from BK Lions Jindrichuv Hradec. Kramny, 27, was unhappy with his role with the Lions, where he saw action in 20 games, while averaging just 14.0 minutes, 6.6 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 54.3% from the field. Kramny came up the junior ranks with Opava and returns to the club after six years away. Opava will open up A2 group play on February 13 versus Astrum Levice.
