Ligaen Round 16: SISU beats Aarhus BC by three after a very close game - Nov 29, 2012

The most exciting game of round 16 in the Ligaen took place in Aarhus. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 6th ranked Aarhus BC (5-8) to fourth ranked SISU (9-4) 77-74 on Thursday evening. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Aarhus BC won third quarter 22-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. SISU made 17-of-19 free shots (89.5 percent) during the game. SISU outrebounded Aarhus BC 40-29 including 17 on the offensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of international point guard Mikael Nielsen (178-PG-90) who helped to win the game recording 21 points and 4 steals. The former international guard Mike Flowers (194-86, college: Barton, NC) contributed with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. American swingman Randy Dezouvre (195-87, college: Iona) replied with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds for Aarhus BC. SISU moved-up to third place, which they share with Horsens IC. Aarhus BC at the other side keeps the sixth position with eight games lost. SISU is looking forward to face Horsholm (#7) at home in the next round. Aarhus BC will play against Vaerlose and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
Ligaen top team - Svendborg (13-0) added another victory to their record. This time they beat eighth ranked Randers (3-10) 98-94. Worth to mention a quality performance of the former international guard Adama Darboe (190-86) who helped to win the game recording 22 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists and Donald Rutherford who added 16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. At the losing side American forward Bonell Colas (205-82, college: Florida) responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks. Undefeated Svendborg have an impressive 13-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 13-0 record. Randers lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keep the eighth place with ten games lost. Svendborg will play against Naestved (#5) at home in the next round. Randers will play against the league's second-placed Bakken in Aarhus and hope to get back on the winning track.
The game between fifth ranked Naestved (7-6) and 10th ranked Aalborg (1-12) in Naestved on Wednesday ended with biggest points difference. Naestved outscored guests from Aalborg 97-65. The winners were led by Quinton Doggett who had that evening a double-double by scoring 22 points and 13 rebounds. Naestved's coach Geoff Kotila felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even 16 points and 7 rebounds by Rob Delaney did not help to save the game for Aalborg. Naestved maintains fifth position with 7-6 record. Aalborg lost third consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with 12 games lost. Naestved will meet league's leader Svendborg on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Aalborg will play against Horsens IC (#3) in Horsens.

In the last game of round 16 Vaerlose was smashed by Bakken on the road 82-62.


Aarhus BC - SISU 74-77

Bakken - Vaerlose 82-62

No shocking result in a game when second ranked Bakken (12-1) crushed 9th ranked Vaerlose (2-11) in Aarhus 82-62 on Thursday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 9-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 82-62. Bakken dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Vaerlose's 32. They outrebounded Vaerlose 45-28 including 16 on the offensive glass. Bakken looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Vaerlose's players. The winners were led by international forward Morten Sahlertz (198-89) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and American point guard Chad Tomko (180-89, college: NC-Wilmington) supported him with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. Tomko is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Even 14 points and 7 rebounds by Icelandic Axel Karason (194-83) did not help to save the game for Vaerlose. American forward Justin Baker (203-89, college: Utah Valley) added 14 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. Five Bakken and four Vaerlose players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Bakken have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position with 12-1 record behind leader Svendborg. Loser Vaerlose keeps the ninth place with 11 games lost. Bakken will meet Randers (#8) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. Vaerlose will play against Aarhus BC and hope to secure a win.

Svendborg - Randers 98-94

Ligaen top team - Svendborg (13-0) added another victory to their record. This time they beat eighth ranked Randers (3-10) 98-94. It looked good early as Randers took an 1-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Svendborg had a 25-21 second period charge getting the lead and Randers were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 94-98. Svendborg made 18-of-18 charity shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. They shot the lights out from three nailing 12 long-distance shots on high 52.2 percentage. Svendborg players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. Worth to mention a quality performance of the former international guard Adama Darboe (190-86) who helped to win the game recording 22 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists and American power forward Donald Rutherford (199-87, college: Catawba) who added 16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. At the losing side American forward Bonell Colas (205-82, college: Florida) responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks and forward Damian Ocana (198-86) scored 31 points and 6 rebounds. The game between fifth ranked Naestved (7-6) and 10th ranked Aalborg (1-12) in Naestved on Wednesday ended with biggest points difference. Naestved outscored guests from Aalborg 97-65. The game without a history. Naestved led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 70 of its points in the paint compared to Aalborg's 36. They outrebounded Aalborg 48-21 including a 35-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. Naestved looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Aalborg's players. The winners were led by American forward Quinton Doggett (203, college: Southern) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 22 points and 13 rebounds and Canadian guard Alexander Murphy (183-88) supported him with 16 points and 8 assists. Four Naestved players scored in double figures. Naestved's coach Geoff Kotila felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
